I never tire of seeing these fun booklets~ beautiful glimpses from women back in time. I used to live in the south, and love cardinals. Fun story about them as I am Catholic. Their gorgeous red color (males) was said to resemble the capes that Cardinals wore in the church. To see a group of cardinal birds is referred to as a Vatican. If you saw a Vatican that year~ it could mean bad weather or lack of food. They would have traveled in large numbers to find food and have lookouts for danger. Starlings are like that all the time (murmuration) . I love fussy birds like cardinals and blue jays so much. I would use string with glue to add to cards a while ago~ like balloon strings and hair. I don't think it has a name since pins or nails were not used. When my Mamaw passed away, I found an old cigar box full of letters from the 1930's. She had a pen pal in England for about 10 years, and that was the only thing I asked my aunts to let me keep. It means the world to me. I wish more people still had pen pals~ it was such a beautiful way to communicate. My favorite ephemera is antique post cards from the early 1900's. Have a wonderful Sunday. Best wishes~ Valerie.

I love the story about the cardinals and their Vatican, it really made me think. I have never seen so many cardinals before or since but we had so many they would line up on one of the cars and almost cover it completely. Such a beautiful sight!
I agree with you about the little books, they are so special and i drought we will ever see anything like them again. Hope your Sunday was also special - Jan

Thank you for sharing. It's fun to see these little sketch books and all the different kinds of ways that they decorated the pages. You could fill in a blank page and write the date on that page. That could end up being interesting in the future. The date on the front isn't the date that the pages were decorated. It's the date of when the book was completed and made it to Eva, the host/founder of this pen pale group. So, this is how, when the date on the front is in July, that the first page might be about Christmas. The previous December. Like the one that says 12/87 on the front but one decorated page is dated 2/87 (10 months earlier). It sometimes could take a while for the book to make its rounds. I remember buying a Holly Hobbie doll (that must have been a later version of Blue Bonnet Sue) when I was in my 2Os! I used it for decoration. Sharing your valentine cards was so sweet 😉. Have a perfect day dear.

You are so right to about the dates and it taking time to make it's rounds. Love it so much and now I love it even more. The thought that someone made the book and decorated one page then sent it to some one else to do a page and she sent it to some one else and so forth. How sweet is this idea, it is a blessing to be given a change to see into the past. Thank you, Sweetie

02:20 Holly Hobbie!! I love Holly Hobbie I have a few plates, dolls and figurines of her that I got from my family. She’s just darling!! The character was originally unnamed and some people called her the blue dress girl or patchwork girl & eventually the name of the watercolorist, Holly Hobbie, who designed the character, became the character’s name! :D

I remember! Thank you, I just couldn't remember her name. I did remember now her being called patchwork girl too. Thank you so much for commenting and reminding me of her name. You are a champion!
