  • Modern monitoring software makes it easy to plot a statistic like
average latency every minute -- too easy. Fancy dashboards of time
series plots often lull us into a false sense of security. Underneath
every point on those plots is a distribution, and underneath that
distribution is a series of individuals: your customers.

This is truly an extraordinary presentation by John Rauser with very well chosen examples. It gives you a good idea of how little your insights might be if you just look at your data with a limited depth, for example, just focusing on the average value of the latency in a time series. Only if you really look at your data more deeply (e.g. the distribution of the latency for any given time, i.e. a histogram) you may obtain the necessary insights you need to even be able to ask the right questions to pursue further. And the presentation also pays tribute to the power of data visualization and human reasoning when using the "tremendously powerful pattern matching system" that we all carry around in-between our ears. Definitely worth watching if interested in #systemperformance , #monitoring / #monitoringsoftware , or #dataanalytics / #datascience .
