I started my first aquarium as an adult and it ended up as a blackwater riparium, and it's almost maintenance free. I had brown algae, but copepods and detritus worms ate it all up.

Doing a similar setup as a turtle tank, so far tank is fully cycled, have been doing tests weekly (parameters all stable) and comfortable enough to move on to bi-weekly tests. Truly is a wonderful beginner set up, I struggled with aquariums and plants in the past, this however has been almost too easy as I am still expecting the tank to crash being 4 months in. Love your video, love your setup, keep giving good information and inspiration!

Hello. I have a problem with my water... Its a well water but have oil and a biy yellow. So i know it can't be used on aquarium at all. Could i use mineral water gallon water that we usually drink? Its kind of RO water right?

I have 2 guppies with curved spines, one of them has a tail that looks heavy (it’s tail is going downward but it’s not that down) and the other one has a curve on its back and a small S shape curve in its tail (the meat makes its body look straight but the bone inside is curved). Do you know if it’s scoliosis or tuberculosis? It’s male and female, they both got it in adulthood and the male got beaten up before it’s spine got curved (they don’t show any symptoms but the male had scale loss due to getting beaten up but it’s healed then got a curved spine) pls if you know can you tell me how common tuberculosis is and how to tell if it’s scoliosis or tuberculosis.

Beautiful. I am, planning a tank with low maintenance but I was planning to build it on actual dirt and soil. Do you think the naturally occurring ammonia will be too much of an issue for algae? There will be UV lights and proper water change and filtration, only no "hands in water" for cleaning.
Thanks! Regarding your tank: I think it all depends on many things. In general you should be fine as long you keep the amount of dirt and soil on reasonable level (not too much) and cap it with sand. And I would start with lots of plants (lot of pland mass) to help with the start. Many people run very successful tanks on dirt and thay are doing great ;)

I’m trying to build one of these with a 30 gallon tank any advice? I would like to try it with some Bettas
Hi. Great setup for a betta! Just start slow, don't put too much light at the beginning. For this kind of setup, use slow growing plants like ferns, anubias, buce - but use a lot of them. Also include few floating plants. Include as much wood as you can, it will make water to change color, make the water much more healthy and help you with the algae. Don't use filtration with very strong current - it will not be good for the betta. Be patient and have fun with it ;) Good luck!

What kind of internal filter are you using on this beauty??? Alder cones and oak leaves btw???? Are almond/cattapa leaves just for bettas shrimp and snails???
Filter is a very simple AQUAEL Pat MINI from Amazon. Yes I'm using alder cones and oak leaves. Almond and catappa are also fine, but more expensive and there is no point in using them if you don't have the fish that like to eat them (like Otos).
@Aquascaping Cube thank you very much for the reply, I do have ottos in two tanks and this is the first time I've heard that they like to eat them so I'm delighted to know that now, will be adding oak leaves from the yard to other tanks in the future, do you suggest boiling them first or just a quick rinse and into the tank, also will definitely check that filter out, been all over the place with filters and have been searching for some better options!!!!
Just keep those leaves in boiling water for few minutes (until they start to sink). And don't use fresh leaves! They need to be dead and dryed out! Good luck!
Are you dosing liquid fertilizer for the plants ? If not where the plants getting the nutrients from
No, I'm not using any liquids. There are 2-3 clay balls in the substrate that I'm changing every 4 months. Additionally I'm NOT removing any silt or decaying leaves and they are decomposing on the bottom.

How do you get rid of the acumulated fish poop in the sand?
I don't, it decomposes and over time it just falls between sand. I used to vacuum on occasion but there is simply no need anymore. It just stays clean.
Can you put Discus fish in there?
In black water? Yes. In this specific one? Not a chance - it's waaaay to small ;)
after several water changes, how do you maintain the black color of the water? by adding clean water, the intensity of the black water is lost
It's trye. But I keep replacing oak leaves and alder cones after they decay. They release fresh tannins and the water stays darker.

No, nothing like that. Those are very easy plants.

No oxygenation, just internal filter.
