Hey, to start out Tanjirou’s stats were fairly average; his only real advantage was his sense of smell. All the rest of that stuff came from his 2 years of training! But yeah... he does get pretty OP as he approaches lvl 20 isn’t he manga. 🤣

Jordan Barkley I actually find Tanjirou and the others’ power scaling to be pretty good; they never feel ‘overpowered’ compared to the current threat, and they get LOTS of on-screen training as justification. You don’t actually realize how insanely powerful they’ve gotten until the start of the Infinity Fortress Arc (the latest and most likely last arc!), for reasons that I’m not going to spoil. It’s certainly better than the power progression I’ve seen in basically every other series. I’m not saying it isn’t wish fulfillment, cause it certainly is, but at least in Demon Slayer the writing is never lazy.
Spoilers below. Jordan Barkley considering the geniuses reach pillar level in a couple of months (Either gyomei or the mist pillar), a fee years of intense training, and constant life or death battles does make sense tanjirou can reach pillar level. Combining that with incomplete breath of the sun against a weakened Muzan, working with other pillars, his power isnt unreasonable.

Instead of the four levels of Sorcerer, why not just take one level of Arcana Cleric to grab Green-Flame Blade as a "cleric" cantrip? It makes more sense anyway since the Flame Sword spell creates a new sword while Green-Flame Blade is an enhancement to a melee weapon attack that doesn't even require Tanjiro's bonus action to cast, plus it scales based on character level instead of caster level. Also, mechanically there's no reason to keep a 'shortsword' over a 'rapier' once you can choose a kensei weapon. Shortswords can be used when dual-wielded, rapiers have a larger damage dice. It's harder to pull off because it's insanely MAD. Getting GFB with Cleric lets you put the racial +1 Charisma elsewhere, plus you get a higher casting modifier for all of your spells.
These are all some pretty good points from a mechanical standpoint. This one feels like it works a lot better for damage output. This is why I like this community. So many different creative ideas on how to accomplish the same general goal, in addition to ideas on possible builds for the future.

As much as I dig the sorcerer levels, especially the divine soul, the KNY lore for sword techniques is not especially magical. They sort of emphasize that when Nezuko does her whole demon thing, so there is a valid argument that Tanjiro just goes full kensei, and the elemental aftereffects are just cosmetic results of sharpening the blade with ki.
Agree, but i think the idea of a 2 level dip in ranger would fit really well too. Tanjiro trained in a mountain for quite a while in order to kill one type of enemy, and "hunter's mark" being the fire on his sword works out nicely.
I agree with your statement, and if someone were to build that they should consult with there DM about the flames. Maybe their DM could give them a magic sword, that simulates the damage from the use of the sun god form or the Water form.
"I'm not going to make any dumb jokes in the intro". Hypocritical humor. That's fun. "Your sister in a box is not armor." Now that's a rare sentence. Caligraphy joke. I think this is my favorite one. Take my all rage! Fuel this blessed channel with my NEERRRRRRDDDDDD RRRAAAAGGGGGEEEEEEE!!!!!!! But seriously, love the channel and the Lets Play channel as well. You do good work. Thanks for doing what you do.
With the new ruling from Tasha's, you can make Tanjiro a wood elf which is a win all around with foreign tree bumpkin, bonus movement, perception proficiency and longsword proficiency. You can use the longsword as a monk weapon. This way, you don't need to dedicate your subclass to getting a sword. Maybe go for four elements for water or long death for anime determination to survive. Also with Tasha's, you can use your Wild Shape as a druid to cast find familiar. Maybe dip into druid instead (circle of stars was my choice) for a Kasugai Crow?
Something I've noticed is that a few of your videos since the Class Features UA have ignored the UA outside of the Unarmed Fighting style and spells, particularly when a build would benefit from the additional/alternate features in terms of theme and imagery. Like the monks bonus action unarmed strike after spending ki for All Might, which counts as a buff to that Elemental Ki sink. I feel like it'd be good for the builds to mention the UA, but set it apart from the vanilla class features by having the wording in black or dark grey as a shorthand for 'this is UA' Links to the UA used in the description might also benefit those having trouble finding it.
I was actually looking around yesterday to see if anyone had done this build, and I thought why hasnt Tulok done this yet? But my question is...and before anyone crucified me...why not go ranger? Favored enemy could be demons, could help with using sense to hunt, stats align a little better too. Just curious, still love the videos.
Definitely agree that two levels of ranger could have helped Tanjiro a lot, though whether or not losing the ASI would be worth it is up for debate. Combine it with my idea of Arcana Cleric 1 instead of Divine Soul Sorceror 4, and you could still get one free reroll on a weapon attack per turn from Monk 17.
@@thesunwillneverset ASI is based on class level, not total level. If you put 2 levels in ranger, even if your monk level is 18, you don't get a level 19 ASI.
Considering that his flame blade doesn't deal fire damage (just cuts better) and that his habilities are related to his mark, reflavoring dance of the fire god as atacks made with hunter's mark works nicely for me.
And I believe I've read that the elemental visuals are simply just effects, there is no actual fire, water or lightning, just there to show the style they are using, and eye candy, it's still an interesting build. If I ever get to do a build like this I may focus more on the demon hunting aspect maybe take a 2 level dip in fighter for action surge,
No one gonna mention that Tanjiro's fire is no different from the "water" we see in the rest of the series: just a visual effect depicting what breathing style he's using?
what's fun is that all the talk of multiclassing into druid somehow inspired my to work on a super old character. and now my arabian monk inspired by aladdin can fire bend thanks tulok!
I love these videos so much. I don’t even really ever play 5e much, but I just really enjoy looking at how these builds work and think of how neat it is that you make things work with playing as one of your favorite characters from either video games or cartoons/anime. Very awesome indeed. Though, I’ve always wondered how I could play Krieg from Borderlands 2 in DnD. It seems simple at first, because of course Barbarian and Frenzied Berserker, but in order to really implement the feel of the character I find the need to introduce a decent few of homebrew feats or special abilities that would actually allow me to feel like I’m playing as Krieg the Psycho. If you ever did a video on him, I think that would be absolutely incredible because your knowledge is 100 times more than my own of how to do these things. Nevertheless, great video, incredible work.
If you want you can skip the sorcerer dip and instead go straight monk, if you take the gift of the chromatic dragon, you can infuse your weapon with an element, including fire, when you do so, you deal an extra d4 of the damage type, you can also use a reaction to gain resistance to the type of damage, best part is that is works with your monk festures including extra attack, you can even then invest the four levels in monk or even another class like ranger for more dps and a use of concentration on hunters mark or favoured foe, you could take gloom stalker for the initiative boost and the dps increase, plus dark vision is pretty handy
"In touch with your animal side..." We've already done Maui and Beast Boy (you've also done San, but that got blocked, so I don't know if you're going to redo it or not), so it can't be them. Maybe seeing some Beast or Wolverine from the X-Men, or maybe Shantae (of you took a look into those games). But I'll just have to wait until Thursday.
Tanjiro is the most Paladin anime I’ve ever seen. His sense of smell is a huge divine sense, his plot armor is the Paladin auras, and he doesn’t have a flaming sword, he has a searing smite. I love Tulok’s builds, but this one might be a candidate for a rework...
I actually built Zenitsu a while back, using at least 17 levels in Scout rogue, with a few options bouncing around to gain Advantage without an ally. running away in combat is very in-character for a conscious Zenitsu, and Sneak attack dice make a whole lot of sense for that Single Big Hit that is "thunderclap & flash". Really just take your pick of an advantage-gaining option though, he never does that with anyone around to see.
11:19 For Zenitsu maybe you could try focusing on the sword play and lightning powers with most of the build and just substitute the sleep powers with a reflavored Barbarian Rage
Tanjiro is small Jonathan. Think about it they both have a familiar that has a curse and don't let them touch the sun and need to ate humans, they both use techniques that requiere having really good lungs, they both hunt the same species of their familiars. But mostly they both are good bois.
Since this is something a lot of people get wrong constantly (including myself,) shortswords do piercing damage, not slashing. If you wanna be a stickler for character accuracy a scimitar would make a better katana analogue, but mechanically it won’t make much of a difference outside of damage type.
You might be able to get a more usable flame-blade or water blade by grabbing Green-Flame blade and Booming Blade from the sorcerer spell list and then using Transmuted Spell meta-magic to convert it to whichever you want. You still need 3 levels of sorcerer to pull that off, but works better than the flame blade spell, and might actually be closer to the show, I have not seen all of season 2 yet. You can also grab Quicken Spell to pull one of them off as a bonus action.
I really thought you were going to take levels in Paladin for "Divine Sense" to use it as a sense of smell to detect demons. I'd personally trade that out for the Sorcerer levels. The "flame blade" bit wasn't any more literal than the water blade thing. The calligraphy element effects aren't literal, just to give a visible metaphor to fighting style. So, not as necessary as you made it out to be lol
1 level in barbarian and constituition higher than wisdon would be enought for most of his character. I wonder how we'd explain the uncanny sense of touch and the fucked up joints...
@tulok the barbarian; , i think forge cleric would have worked a lot better than sorcerer because forge clerics get searing smite which empowers his blade with fire damage on his monk weapons which goes with his wis mod, light cleric would have also been a good choice, cause obivious, also the new cleric spell list gets wrathful smite, just saying to take into consideration for making inosuke. thank you for reading this.
“Strength is a bit on the low side. You are ‘just a kid’ after all.” *A ‘kid’ that can rival demon strength when trying to slice a demon.* If he wasn’t strong, the demons would easily overpower him when he swings. *I ought to slap you…*
Really like the way this went, though I'd end up taking 5 levels of Forge Cleric instead since it gives Elemental Weapon as a 3rd. Lose out on an ABI but lets you use your WIS casting stat and better spell selection.
You can choose the longsword for the kensei weapon. It'll become a monk weapon for you, allowing you to use your dexterity for It. It also fits better than a shortsword, since the demon slayer's weapons look like average length Katanas
Heads up, the new Druid Circle of the Stars archetype is perfect for this class. It's not official yet, of course, so I get why you wouldn't use it. But if it does make it to canon, it's great. First, the Star Map feat gives you free augury and guiding bolt spells per day, and if you make your Star Map be your sister box, you could say it represents a helping hand from Nezuko. Augury is an especially great addition, as it can be role played as her tugging on you, intuition, demon sense, or a good long sniff. Second - and this is where it shines - Starry Form lets you use up your nonsensical animal wild shapes on this ability instead, which is exceptional, and can easily be interpreted as Tanjiro's water breathing. This is especially for the Dragon form, which basically gives you the 11th level Rogue feat "Reliable Talent" for all your Int, Wis and concentration checks. Not only is that thematically perfect for Demon Slayer's breathing styles, but it also makes your Good Boi sniffer even better (for 10 minutes), and additionally nullifies the primary drawback of the Flame Blade spell you can pick up: it's reliability on concentration in melee combat. The other Constellations are okay too but not as thematic. The flair could be spun in a Demon Slayer way, but I don't think you're going to spend your two wild shapes on anything other than the Dragon Starry Form.
I'd say the relatively standard nichiren blade he uses is probably a long sword sadly, since its a hand and a half sword. Thankfully its pretty flexible by the setting since "nicheren blade" can include axe-hammer combos and rapiers that apply poison.
Off the top of my head i'd think that would be mostly fighter, with maybe a few levels in tempest cleric to get some of those lightning spears he likes to chuck at bosses when you summon him. Maybe an Oath of Heroism Paladin instead of fighter to maximize his power of Jolly Cooperation
As far as Druid Tanjiro goes, you can get an animal companion instead of wildshape with that same UA that adds flame Blade to sorc. You could definitely travel with a wild boar.
only issue i have with the build is the misunderstanding of how Extra Attack works in conjunction with Agile Parry; from the twitter of Chris Perkins himself, when you choose the attack action, you choose ONE of the weapons you're using [so either sword or unarmed strike in the case of the build] to attack with; meaning that you only get the Agile Parry AC bonus if you use your Unarmed Strike for your WHOLE attack action. it's the same reason that dual wielders cannot swing right-hand, left, right.

Take my all rage! Fuel this blessed channel with my NEERRRRRRDDDDDD RRRAAAAGGGGGEEEEEEE!!!!!!! But seriously, love the channel and the Lets Play channel as well. You do good work. Thanks for doing what you do.
Oh god...
Bless your soul when that Shirou video finally comes out...
Archer from /Zero is Gilgamesh, though. Emiya is the Archer from /Stay Night
I admire your dedication to character accuracy in your builds over combat effectiveness.
5:15- it has finally happened!!!
Tulok has finally achieved his goal of making a character who actually uses calligraphy he must be so proud
I was so happy that you replied when i suggested this a while back, im glad you liked the show! Thanks for your hard work!
I feel like it'd be good for the builds to mention the UA, but set it apart from the vanilla class features by having the wording in black or dark grey as a shorthand for 'this is UA'
Links to the UA used in the description might also benefit those having trouble finding it.
You would still get the ASI from total level 19,I think. Otherwise, all good!
If I ever get to do a build like this I may focus more on the demon hunting aspect maybe take a 2 level dip in fighter for action surge,
*Tulok: Finally makes a character with Way of the Brush who does calligraphy*
*Me:* WHAT'S UP WITH THAT? I WANNA DO THAT TOO!
No one gonna mention that Tanjiro's fire is no different from the "water" we see in the rest of the series: just a visual effect depicting what breathing style he's using?
Automatically liking the best boy
Bless you
I come back to this video every now and then simply for the calligraphy
Happy Mardi Gras, and thank for thowing us this build, mistah!
what's fun is that all the talk of multiclassing into druid somehow inspired my to work on a super old character.
and now my arabian monk inspired by aladdin can fire bend
thanks tulok!
ok, i just started this vid and i have watched and read ALL there is to the series and this is beautiful
So now that wild companion is a thing and tanjiro has a guiding crow druid tanjiro is more and more appealing
I've never even seen this show and this was one of my favorite episodes. The intro killed me.
I shall fuel you with my rage in the youtube algorithm
. . .I like dubbed and subb
Bet you didn't see that coming
I keep watching this video for inspiration on a demon slayer esk demon slayer guild I want in my homebrew world, tulok you are a god
Every single goddamn video until Tulok builds Turok in a video
I must say, you made a lot of decisions I didn't expect. Very intriguing build I'd love to try one day
If you want you can skip the sorcerer dip and instead go straight monk, if you take the gift of the chromatic dragon, you can infuse your weapon with an element, including fire, when you do so, you deal an extra d4 of the damage type, you can also use a reaction to gain resistance to the type of damage, best part is that is works with your monk festures including extra attack, you can even then invest the four levels in monk or even another class like ranger for more dps and a use of concentration on hunters mark or favoured foe, you could take gloom stalker for the initiative boost and the dps increase, plus dark vision is pretty handy
Nice to finally see a TH-camr who doesn't flex on dun lovers :'3
"Strength 10 since you're a kid and you're not that strong" tanjiro sliced a bolder in half near the beginning of the show
"In touch with your animal side..." We've already done Maui and Beast Boy (you've also done San, but that got blocked, so I don't know if you're going to redo it or not), so it can't be them. Maybe seeing some Beast or Wolverine from the X-Men, or maybe Shantae (of you took a look into those games). But I'll just have to wait until Thursday.
He already did Wolverine. I’d be made up if he did Shantae, though.
@@OrangeyChocolate Oh yeah, whoops.
Woah woah, you mean to tell me, to tell all of us,
That you really let a character have Calligraphy? Tulok, that's outrageous! It's unfair!
Take a seat Tibbo Ocelot
Love you Tulok thanks for another badass video
And I love you random citizen
Calligraphy alert is the funniest thing I've heard all day
I was proud of that, thank you
I actually built Zenitsu a while back, using at least 17 levels in Scout rogue, with a few options bouncing around to gain Advantage without an ally. running away in combat is very in-character for a conscious Zenitsu, and Sneak attack dice make a whole lot of sense for that Single Big Hit that is "thunderclap & flash". Really just take your pick of an advantage-gaining option though, he never does that with anyone around to see.
11:19 For Zenitsu maybe you could try focusing on the sword play and lightning powers with most of the build and just substitute the sleep powers with a reflavored Barbarian Rage
Damn, Demon Slayer looks kickass. I’ll have to give it a watch.
"Your rage fuels me". That made me laugh so hard.
Tanjiro is small Jonathan.
Think about it they both have a familiar that has a curse and don't let them touch the sun and need to ate humans, they both use techniques that requiere having really good lungs, they both hunt the same species of their familiars. But mostly they both are good bois.
@@ShankMugen everything is a jojo reference
Finally I catched up with the show, so I can watch the build
Ah TANJIRO I was planning to ask for this character on the next video, I didn't know he was an your list already that is AWESOME
He won the redemption poll!
I know you are probably already gonna do it before long, but I just wanna say... The Doctor from Doctor Who!
Love ya
Would've gone with Cleric, they use Wisdom and Breath of Fire came from a dance to the sun god.
Valid point
He could have also done a fifth level dip into forge domain for elemental weapon
I love this so much. I can't wait to get this character built
Hey it’s being dubbed weekly on adult swim they are on episode 17 right now
I am really looking forward to Inosuke. Would he be a Barb Monk? Great work on Tanjiro though, he's one I had been wondering about.
Top candidate: Archer from the fate series.
Me it would have been Lancer.................. And he's already dead.
Which Lancer? Blue Boy?
@@Kuronosa yes Cu Chulain.
Edelgard all the way
For a second I thought you were going to say Archer from Archer
technically they are all dead lol. even Shirou is dead when he comes back as a Heroic Spirit.
After you finish with the boar give our favorite lighting boy some love please
5:00 Kensei shot by throwing an axe?
"You get Kensei shot which you can use for ranged weapons though that's out of character"
*starts laughing madly in Train of Infinite Dreams arc*
“Strength is a bit on the low side. You are ‘just a kid’ after all.”
*A ‘kid’ that can rival demon strength when trying to slice a demon.* If he wasn’t strong, the demons would easily overpower him when he swings. *I ought to slap you…*
HOW IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THAT MAGNIFICENT ALWAYS SUNNY JOKE?! He NOSE crime
Fantastic anime build as always. You always surprise me.
Really like the way this went, though I'd end up taking 5 levels of Forge Cleric instead since it gives Elemental Weapon as a 3rd. Lose out on an ABI but lets you use your WIS casting stat and better spell selection.
Thank you for just nailing the intro song
finally the calligraphy has an in character use!!!
Genuinely thought you were planning some sweet sweet blood hunter with how you were talking about turning into animals and flaming blades
Order of the Lycan might be an interesting way to make a character like Inosuke.
"You're not going to get there if you're pig headed" is that a crack on Inosuke?
You can choose the longsword for the kensei weapon. It'll become a monk weapon for you, allowing you to use your dexterity for It.
It also fits better than a shortsword, since the demon slayer's weapons look like average length Katanas
Guess you're adding Demon Cinnamon-Roll AND Beast Mode to the docket. Fun-fun... Nezuko is adorable, and I love Inosuke. He's so "bro!"
"You're not going to get there if you're pig-headed."
I see what you did there.
There is also the green flame blade cantrip. You can always reflavor it to not be green.
Nani? Cool.
Also I'm not asking we get Demon Micheal Jackson anytime but.... who knows (cough)
I asked on Patreon, but could you do a build for Solaire from Dark Souls?
Maybe eventually!
I really hope you make a video of the Arrow Demon/Temari Demon.
I’m unfortunately not on Patreon but my god I’ve wanted to see Tulok do a Fate character (specifically Archer too) for so long! Please let him win out
Roy Mustang build please!
oh PLEEAAASE TULOK
FIREBALLLLLLL
First level monk 19th level evocation wizard who decided to make his spellbook a glove, and now has only two spells there.
@@marcospatricio8283 That would fit Mustang!
11:27
i mean, Cloud of Daggers and Blade Barrier are pretty close.
both of which are DEX saves anyway, so good cal
Glad to see this, hope to see your version of Nezuko soon!
(My Adventurers League Nezuko-esque character is a Tiefling (Zariel) Monk/Barbarian)
My DM legitimately made a demon slayer class because he wanted a magic swordsman except its called “Slayer” its so badass
