    File by Mail: I called the county clerk office today (5/27/20) and they mentioned you will need to complete the AFFIDAVIT OF IDENTITY FORM along with the FBN filing and mail it into the Norwalk office at (P.O. BOX 1208, NORWALK, CA 90651) with a check for $26 made out to Los Angeles County Clerk. Here is a sample fo the form - lavote.net/docs/rrcc/documents/Affidavit-of-Identity-Sample.pdf - They said you should receive it back in 4-8 weeks with a certified copy. Also, I just called a local UPS store as of (5/27/20) and they mentioned that they are open and doing notary services, but each County will likely be operating under different guidance during the pandemic so I would check online and call ahead to see what option would be best for you.

    Thank you this was so helpful! I'm filing my DBA during the Coronavirus pandemic so of course all these offices are closed. I'm pretty confident I'll find a notary and then mail the form in with my fee.

    Hi there, I just sent in my registration through mail and waiting for confirmation but due to circumstances i must put everything on hold right now. I want to cancel the dba process. Should i wait until i receive confirmation to file for an abandonment or can i start the process now?

      Out-the-door you're looking at about $60 - $100 for a DBA in LA County that is good for 5-years.
      First-time Filing Fee for one business name and one registrant is $26. And if you pay with a credit card in-person they will charge a processing fee of $1.75. here is the link to the page on the fees - lavote.net/home/county-clerk/fictitious-business-names/fees

BOX 1208, NORWALK, CA 90651) with a check for $26 made out to Los Angeles County Clerk.     This video was awesomely thorough! I almost submitted a DBA application via Legalzoom, when I discovered that I could file a FBN application with my county clerk's office. What is the difference between getting a DBA via Legalzoom ($99) vs. getting a FBN via my local county clerk's office ($35)? Are they the same thing?

      You would need them for both when you get to that point.

    When mailing in the affidavit form, I must wait until I receive the certified copy back before I can run it in the newspaper. Is this correct ?

      It will be a notification that you will be able to publish the notice in the newspaper. The certified copy will be the last document when the process is complete.

    If it's an online business that will be selling outside of Cali will using a Cali filed DBA be sufficient?

      I would call the county clerk office to be sure (800) 201-8999, but I believe so. Many home-based online retail stores are set up under a DBA and sell to out-of-state customers. I would suggest setting up an appointment with one of our consultants to go over all the likely licenses and permits you may need based on what you're selling.     I live in California. Is there an extra cost and annual fee to add a online DBA underneath my LLC? Do you know or does anybody know? Also can my client make a check out to my DBA name?

      Unless you are wanting to do business under a name other than your LLC then you don't need a DBA. If you are looking to set up a DBA, then you would need to do it in the county the business is located and it's good for 5 years.       @UC180CRyTAfyFGIQqFIrPQSQ Once you complete the online portion of the application in the video (using the mail-in option), the Affidavit of Identity form will be on page 2 the application. You can print it out and mail it in with the application after you've had it notarized.

      Any changes involving your DBA will need an amendment. The County Clerk should have instances on what you should do and if you need to republish. You may want to give the clerk a call to make sure.

      That's a good question. It looks like it would be the residence address. Below is what I found on the paper form instructions;
      (a) If the registrant is an individual, insert his or her full name and residence address
      (b) If the registrants are husband and wife, insert the full name and residence address of both the husband and the wife
      (c) If the registrant is a general partnership, copartnership, joint venture, limited liability partnership, or unincorporated
      association other than a partnership, insert the full name and residence address of each general partner
      (d) If the registrant is a limited partnership, insert the full name and residence address of each general partner
      (e) If the registrant is a limited liability company, insert the name and address of the limited liability company, as set out in its
      articles of organization on file with the CA Secretary of State, and the state of organization
      (f) If the registrant is a trust, insert the full name and residence address of each trustee
      (g) If the registrant is a corporation, insert the name and address of the corporation, as set out in its articles of incorporation on file
      with the CA Secretary of State, and the state of incorporation
      (h) If the registrants are state or local registered domestic partners, insert the full name and residence address of each domestic
      partner
      Just be prepared to get a good amount of junk mail for the first month or so selling you everything from boxes to pens, etc. - very scammy stuff that sometimes looks official, but isn't.

    When you filled out the paper, does the address you put for your Fictitious Name is the same one you put all the way in the bottom where it says And I reside at? I mean if you rent a place for living, you don’t want to give that home address.

    hi, the online register form of San Francisco asks "what is the type of bussiness“ which one should I register as if I want to do DBA

      The sole proprietorship is the only business formation that requires a DBA. LLCs and Corporations will need to be set up with the Secretary of State. If need additional help, you may want to contact your local SBDC to get help with starting your business.

      So, when it asks about "what is the type of business," it's asking you what your business is. It is NOT asking you for your business name. I'm guessing you did what I did and filled for a business license first before filing for an EIN. What you want to do is file for an EIN first in order to know what the wordings the IRS/County/City wants to know. The EIN process will figure out what wordings you will need to put down when you are asked for your "type of business."

      @@kathleenyang3251 The type of business is how your business is structured (sole prop, LLC, Corporation). You need to secure a business name before you get an EIN and proceed from there.       There is whole list of available newspaper publishers you can use on the county clerk website. They also have prices posted so you can do it as economically as possible.

    Does anyone know how I can do this by mail ? The website is so confusing?

      follow the same steps in the video, but at 54 seconds you'll want to click the "Mail in" option. Then when you print the document at the end you'll need to get it notarized. We have consultants you can meet with via zoom for free if you'd like to walk through it together. Just sign up to become a client and we'll reach out to you to schedule a zoom meeting (www.lavernesbdc.org/newclient). Also, they moved the online filing registration system link to the bottom of this page - lavote.net/home/county-clerk/fictitious-business-names/filing/requirements. Happy to help!

      @@LaverneSBDC do you know if it takes a lot longer to do it by mail? I have not been able to schedule an appointment at the LA County clerk since November! all it says is to keep checking every day .. lol
      Im just scared that by mail something is gonna get lost or something

      @@millenniallou6787 we have seen it does take a while at least a few weeks to get processed and then the publishing over 4 weeks. There isn't a quicker way to do unfortunately.
