Tim Duncan is one of those guys that gets buckets here and there and at the end of the game you're like "damn, when the fuck did he put up 35?" Dude was a quiet killer.
Spurs fan here. I remember a lot of times going back to the highlights thinking exactly that. Like I watched the whole game and I didn't feel he scored more than 10 and his sheet was like 27-12-6. Every night!
If Kobe was the Mamba then Duncan was the Anaconda. Just the steady application of pressure, and it first you don't even notice it, but eventually he just breaks you down. In my opinion Duncan was the epitome of substance over style and a master of refined, technical skill on the court.
@@MrDeedsalta I'm a Nuggets fan and years ago my dad and I went to a game at the Pepsi center and saw Timmy & the Spurs beat our Nuggets. It didn't look like Duncan did much except stand in the way and bank a few shots in but we got home and Duncan had 30 pts, 13 reb, 4 ast and 4 blks and we couldn't figure out how. He didn't seem to do that much, but that was why he was so great. He was subtle. Duncan was a freakin' magician out there and he'd burn your team and you wouldn't notice until the game was over, but more often then not he got the W.
I watched him play a couple of times, and he "disappeared" in the dynamics of the game... then, I looked up at the scoreboard and you see "21 ----- 24pts, 14 rb" and I went :"when the heck did he do that?"
They should have called him ' the stealth '
To hear Pop saying at the end of the video that "Tim is still the same person as he was when he first came in through the door" is very powerful. Brought a tear to my eye.
The reason coach said that is because Tim's dad asked Pop to make sure his son is the same person as he first came through the door. So it had a deeper meaning for those that know.

Same, but add in the smile of his daughter when the jersey went up hit me hard. Definitely tears in my eyes. Amazing player who played the game the right way on and off the court.

Tim Duncan’s team defeated a young Lebron AND prime Lebron in the NBA finals. Quite an impressive feat in itself when it’s all said and done. He is one of the greatest players to ever lace them up. No frills, no bs, just straight ballin.
Take into account Pop has one the best systems in nba coaching history.

They wanted Iversons, they wanted to sell jerseys, and the league, the refs, the advertisers, and the fans all played into it because of who they wanted on the face of the league. All the while ignoring who should have been all along.
True Duncan was dominant defensively but also played in the Ben Wallace era when he was dominating the award. Ben was also the more exciting defensive player even though Tim was just as great.
@@gibrilkanu4764 You are right talking about Gasol. That tells me that the voting has gotten a lot sharper recently. If Tim played a decade later, he would have at least 2 DMVPs. It was tough with KG and Ben (who I think are both slightly better defenders on the whole. Ben was more disruptive causing turnovers. KG simply has the best D instincts of any player in league history), but Tim was clearly in that tier and would’ve won with smarter voting.
The NBA,and it's media have always disrespected the great city of San Antonio and it's Spurs.

Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki battled for 15+ years and both stayed on the same team respectively. Time after time the Mavs lost to the Spurs in the playoffs except for once or twice. It would have been nice to see one video clip of them in their long history. They were very different players and often did not guard each other, but it seemed like you left out an important rivalry.

Two of 4 Spurs wins went all the way to the Title.

Tim Duncan was on the wrong end of 2 iconic buzzer beaters, a 0.4 second Derrick Fisher miracle and Ray Allen 3 pointer in 2013. Minus those San Antonio tragedies, Timmy would have ended with 7 rings and he would have a really strong argument for THE best player of all time

When he was a rookie I would see him around San Antonio. I lived in the area he lived in and he was super humble and he would always say hi . He never knew me by my name but I once was at a restaurant with my friends and he waved hi to me. My whole school heard about that story it was so cool .

He was just plain great at everything: Offense, defense, fundamentals, intangibles, leadership, being a good team-mate, being a professional - and he was just as great off the court. There will never be another player like him, and he's far higher on the list of "Best Ever" than almost anyone ranks him (and I don't mean among Power Forwards).
I mean I rank him third (Jordan, Bird, Duncan).

I would put him only behind Jordan because Jordan has 6 rings with two threepeats under his belt. Tim Duncan has come the closest to matching Jordans 6 titles But Tim Duncan has the most important 🐐 acolytes only the overall 🐐 should have. (1) He made the playoffs/ never missed the playoffs two decades straight.👉 (From his rookie season until his retirement.) (2) He has 50+ winning season his entire career. (Except the 1 short season where he was on pace to hit 50+ if not for that shorten season.) (3) Has a winning percentage against every NBA team in the league. (4) Has the highest winning percentage of all major sports. (NHL, NBA, NFL, MLB, etc..) (5) Won the league MVP back to back and a championship title along with the finals MVP in the same year while being the only All-Star on the 2003 team. Notable mention's: Won the rookie of the year became a All Star and made first team All NBA on offense and defense.👉 (The last player to do that was Larry Bird 50+ yrs ago. And nobody has done it since Tim Duncan. We are now in 2022 and still Timmy is the last player since Bird to achieve this awesome acolyte.) Also: Tim Duncan won a title his second year following his rookie of the year season. He did all this and more with the same team. 💯✌️

Timmy was arguably the best of his generation. Yes, Kobe included.
Kobe was my favorite player growing up cuz of his passion and mentality. But if you asked me who I'd start pick to to start my franchise with, it would be Duncan, if I needed to win 1 single game like a game 7 or something I'm riding and dying wit kobe. But I think Duncan was the best 2000's player

I personally never found him boring to watch. I find it quite entertaining to watch him destroy everybody on the block
See that's the thing because I remember watching him play a lot, I mean a lot, especially postseason and boring would pop into my head but I knew it wasn't boring and it's just that dude was so freaking fundamentally sound and not boring especially when you look at the numbers guy put up, he's one of those guys that just got it done. Kind of like that that drop step that Olajuwon would use on everybody, everybody and it would go kind of unnoticed but then at the end of the game he's got 20 points just off of that little drop step because nobody could do anything with it unless you kept him outside which wasn't happening. I put Duncan above a lot of players, including LeBron, if I sat down and wrote it out he probably makes the top 10 in my world.
Its a casual narrative. If you appreciate the art of the game you will love Duncan.
Growing up in San Antonio we just had this "hatred" for the Lakers, especially come playoffs. 8:26 is the reason I teared up so hard when I found out about Kobe. Iron sharpens iron and he's part of our Spurs history.

I'm a spurs fan, but I love kobe so its a torment with the west man at that time. And then when kobe died, it was like my uncle died and then every team had games and you see players crying, then seeing the spurs players it hit home.
As a spurs fan born in ‘96. I literally grew up with greatness and was spoiled with a posteseason berth every year. Now that I’m older I just appreciate it even more because it’s tough to watch my spurs these days😭

Thankfully, I read a 2007 article that served as a reminder (or admonishment). Timmy was inevitably declining that time and basically telling to enjoy Timmy's presence until it lasts.
Turns out there's nine (9) years more. And few weeks after reading it, they clinched the franchise's fourth Title.
Every year that Tim was here, we had a legitimate shot at winning it all. Every freaking year, for 2 decades, when the season started, you could honestly say, the Spurs have a good shot of winning it all. Not just a shot, but a good shot. In the 2000s, it was the Lakers or the Spurs. The East was awful, so the finals really happened when LA and SA met, wheather it was, WCF or earlier rounds.

Timmy was the personification of basketball fundamentals. I copied his "off the glass" shot because it was so smooth. My friends always make fun of me because I always use the backboard because of Tim.

People don't understand that Timmy had that dawg in him. Not the ferocious, loud one, but the quiet pack leader that sits back watching over everyone. But when it was time, Tim put in work. Mr. Fundamental, 1 of the greatest to ever do it
I love the parallels between Timmy and Bill Russell.
Russell is a great team player like Tim, but it's a disservice to Tim to compare him to Bill Russell, who was more like Ben Wallace. Wilt is a much more apt comparison, but Wilt was a better player than Tim. That said, Wilt was a better player than all. The greatest athlete to ever live.
Russell won 11 rings. In any era that means something, and any comparison to such a player is never a disservice, even for Tim. Russell may be the best defensive big man ever. And obviously got boards. Tim got it done more on the offensive end than Bill. That said, they both went about business with determination and consistency and got the better from a career standpoint of the dominant big men of their day (wilt and shaq).

Tim Duncan was always humble and quiet he never was a douchebag he just did his job and did it well hats off to him straight up
The look on his daughters face, at the end of this video where they reveal this retired number in the rafters, is amazing. She understands how much that crowd, that city loves her dad.
I miss that Spurs team. They were good every year. Even when they lost the playoffs they kept the same core and came back ready to win the next season.

Hey for sure, a top 10 player of all time but as far as beinga a fan and enjoying his game vs what Garnet, Dirk, Sabonis( Soviet era), Jokic, and even Embid have on offer.... Nah. He is better than all of them on a consistency basis but Prime Dirk and Garnet and Olympic Sabonis were all a better watch..

That’s how you know he lead by example regarding Pop grilling him during games when Stephen Jackson says “well if Timmy is taking what am I gonna do and that made me a better player” a true leader by example
One of the things that is underrated about Tim is agents wanted to him to go to nba after his sophomore year at Wake Forest. Tim would have been a number one pick if he did, but chose to stay 4 yrs. Tim was a great collegiate player as well.
the reason why he stay four years in college was because of a promise he gave to his mother: to go to college and get a degree.
The most painful part of me as a San Antonio Spurs Fan is when Timmy retired via Text Message or Phone call to Coach Pop that he wont join the Training Camp and will retire. the Trade of Tony Parker to Hornets to make Dejounte Murray the Starting Guard of Spurs and the Retirement of Manu :(
Timmy made perfect fundamentals look routine. Like others in the comments have said, Tim plays so consistently without flair, just precise applications of basics in their purest form, yet he was putting up ridiculous numbers every night.
Back in the 2000's those Spurs/Lakers match ups were legendary. MJ is the GOAT, but Dunc is my favorite player all time.
The greatest power forward to ever play the game
The guy hurt his foot in his early 30s and wasn't the same after that, then he went on to play for so long I think a lot of people were either too young to remember or simply forgot just how incredible this guy was. He'd play the whole team ball thing but when it came down to crunch time, I remember the Spurs just force-feeding Duncan over and over and he'd eat guys alive in the post. He could have put up 30 a game if that's the way he wanted to play. Part of why he was such a great leader, he didn't dominate the offensive side of the ball unless he really had to. Whole team was involved from beginning to end.
The crazy thing is if u adjust the stats for per 36 minutes he hadn't even changed that much after injury

Born in mass but I have been a massive Spurs fan all due to this man Tim Duncan. I still love the Spurs just because of all the great moments. He inspired me to play basketball which has helped me tremendously thru life. I love this surfer dude

Well the thing is is that nobody talks about him being 4 and O in the finals and that's pretty good
Duncan won 4 titles without a teammate making an All-NBA team.
Magic did it twice, but played when there were only 2 All-NBA teams.
No one else has done is more than once. Tim is top 5 all time without question.
That 03 run is magical but somehow its still underrated. He had to go against shaq and kobe and his best team mate was sophomore tony.

Born and raised in the 210 and a third generation Spurs fan... There will never be another one like Timmy and I'm just thankful I was alive to witness his greatness in totality. The whole Kawhi episode between the timing of it being right after Tim's retirement and the nature of the DYSFUNCTION that occurred that ultimately lead to his departure, for me, it only helped give perspective and forced me to appreciate Timmy's legacy that much more and I hope he truly knows how much the fan base genuinely loves him for being him.... Go Spurs Go!!!!

I remember I went to a Clippers vs Spurs game when Lob City was in it's prime, being a Clippers fan I was excited to see this in person... Except they were playing the Spurs... Yeah no lobs that night, hardly any dunks. Witnessed greatness that night that left me disappointed as a Clippers fan but in awe as a Basketball fan.
