Hello Bourne, best video on this topic I have seen so far! Bought a Mojave EXB. Is there anything different in particular between your diffs in the video and the Mojave EXB LSD ones? Thank you sir!
Awesome video sir, thanks for this. I have a Kraton 6s RTR but am considering buying a Kraton EXB to experiment with adding my own ESC and motor set up for the first time instead of buying RTR. The diff issues I have seen and heard about have put me off a little bit but this video at least lets me know there is a way to get the thing to be reliable. In my opinion though it should not be up to us, the customer, to get involved in spending money, waiting for parts and then stripping down a brand new model to prevent part failures from normal use of the product from the manufacturer. That said, I saw one other video recently where an owner added a locked spool / block to the rear diff to at least get his EXB running and get some use out of it and although that is not an option I would personally consider I did wonder what your thoughts would be on installing a locked spool to the centre diff of a Kraton or Outcast 6s which most people use 500k diff oil or silicon plugs to practically lock it anyway. Thanks for your time and subscribed for future updates.
Cheers man, yea it's a shame they didnt sort this out in testing but they have now updated and have produced a rear diff that is similar to my design. I personally wouldn't lock any of the diffs on a basher. Its key to have some play, not alot needed but some else the rest of your drive line will be torn to bits
Should there be any slight clicking when you spin both shafts on the diff by hand? I’m guessing it should just run smoosh as silk? I rebuilt my diff after replacing the oil (mainly because I heard a click my noise and wanted to check the gears) and once I cleaned and rebuilt it it was making the same ever so slightly click feeling when spinning the diff ends by hand. If this isn’t right do you know what it could be? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks. This makes sense way better than LSD. I am getting Kraton EXB next week but I ordered 12*18*0.2 by mistake. Do you think it will touch the gasket?
Nope no shims were needed on the spider gears, they actually line up nicely with the edge of the sun gear. I don't think you would need any extra in there from what I have seen
Hi the 0.2 shims you used behind the pinion bearing towards the end of the video are they the same size 13 x 16 x 0.2mm ones you used behind the sun gear in the differential?
No I believe they are 13x19 check in the description but it's important they fit the outside of the bearing which I believe is 19mm. The sizes are in the description of the video
Did this yesterday I too had two large and one small shim behind the pin. When putting back together I put the shims behind the pin back in the order they came out 2x large first then the small shim next to the pin. OK thanks so much for your help, looking forward to putting the first pack through it this evening. 👍 I think I know how the incorrect shimming from the factory came about. If you look at the diagram in the manual for the rear differential it has the shims all mixed up. It shows the small shims but the part number is for the larger shim dimensions and vise versa. Hi, i finally got to use my EXB today after getting it all set up and following your advise on shimming the rear diff and it worked perfect so thanks for sharing your advice but ive come across a problem with my esc not recognising that ive got two 3's batteries it only beeps three times not six, ive got them connected by using a converter cable going from one to two. I was wondering if you've got any ideas on why its only beeping 3 times and not 6. Thanks paul
Hi buddy it sounds like your connector is a parallel one not a series one. You need a series one to make 2x3s a 6s. Parallel is just 3s with double run time.
Just looked at the cable and it looks like your right, am i right in saying that the in series connecter is the positive cable to positive on one connecter negative cable to negative on another connecter then connect the two connecters together with negative to positive, if it is then the cable i got is wrong as all the positives are together and negatives are together which im assuming is the parallel type
great video on that rear diff. can you please tell the part number for the shims i need? i just got a new EXB i want to top off all my diffs and of course check and shim the rear. thanks

Not sure if I have an old manual or not but it shows the front and rear both use the lsd plates, do you know if this is the correct way or should I only be using the plates on the front and big and small shims in the rear?
For shimming the pinion, I wasn’t able to find the shims that fit inside and behind the bearing. I left the bearings in place and put a smaller shim on the actual pinion shaft and brought in in closer to the crown wheel. Any reason that method wouldn’t work the same?
Mine is on the way. However it looks like they’re doing lsd in the rear now. I wonder if it would be better to get the shim kit and make it open. My only arrma is the v2 outcast.
Super late to the party but i have an issue with this fix. One diff had the pin channel in the sun gear completely sheer off. This fix would only create more of the gap from the pin to the sun gear. Also ive only had lsd diffs and ive gone through 2 with a new one just sitting because i dont trust it. Any ideas?
Nice work. Hope it holds up. Fact remains however that Arma completely dropped the ball on the EXB launch with their rear diff problems. I know of people who are still waiting on their warranty replacement diffs. We shouldn’t have to be playing armchair engineer to fix an obvious design flaw from Arma. Diff problems have plagued their rigs for some time now....going back to early version Outcast’s that needed the diffs to be shimmed out of the box. I was hoping their QC and customer service would’ve improved after Horizon bought them. So much for hoping. You’d think Arma would have it figured out by now. Guess not. But hey...Arma tough baby! Yeah right 🤮
Cheers man, it has held up very well. No issues yet and multiple days out abusing this truck. Yes it is a shame that people have to wait for parts etc. It Is good they have now fixed the issue though, just annoying that people have to wait on parts
HI what kind of diff fluid are you using now when you shim it. you said 30k on your can i use 10k ? or i should use 30k? its not gonna effect the diff to much is it? making more bullet proof or less ? i would assume 50k is too heavy ?
Hello, you can use what ever diff fluid you want, the change is in the handling of the truck. For example thicker in the rear gives slightly more power out of corners but can slide about more
Yes you can there exactly the same parts apart from the lsd plates, the Lsd plates take up the same amount of room so you don't need to for strength but if you prefer none lsd you can take them out and do the same as I did
Great Tips , I will try this out too ! Only problem so far is the 13x19 shims won’t ship to US! I’ll try and find some online tomorrow. Unless anyone knows where to source those , Thanks !
Is this still an issue for arrma? Considering an exb but afraid to buy garbage. I've only had a maxxv2 so far and haven't had to do anything really at all to it
@@bournemouthrc4371 i can find it at all. I spent an hour online. It would work if it just was the smaller size as long as it only touches the inside ring of bearing it should work right. Obviously touching the outside ring of bearing is better but im wondering if i should just give it a try to see if it still spins freely
So Arrma have brought out yet another version with major problems straight away - great video - u solved my diff problem on my v4 with your othet shimming vid ! Thanks bud it was annoying te hell out of me hearing that grinding. Can i pick your brain ? I see the gp4 crown n pinion fit but what about all the safe d stuff and bulkhead size etc? Modelshops show non compatible but to me it looks like it will fit. Can u help pls mate ? I basically want EXB drivetrain in my v4
Cheers man, I'm glad there helping. Right I dont have an exb, just the diff but here is what I know. The diffs and pinion will go into the old housing fine. But I think you need complete diffs as the diff cups are smaller and the V4 wont fit onto the crown gear. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong). The chassis is a straight swap, arms are slightly different but should swap. Towers are different (rear more like mojave I believe) but again will swap. If I'm honest and you upgrading your V4 the front and rear diff and pinion is all that I would use EXB for the rest I would stick to M2C etc as they are stronger than the exb one already. I hope that answers your question

@@rccircus7271 I'm not 100% sure but I believe you have to put the whole exb diff in as the crown gear has different whole locations for the smaller diffs. I measured My LSD plates at .6 each 1.8mm total which makes sense as you stacked the under pin shims large small large so the edge of the top large one isn't supported and with a 13mm bore the shims emulating the LSD plates are sitting it large arma shim has a 13.7 OD.
Yes you are right they do over lap slightly, that's also why I went large small large with the lower shims to act as a sort of sprung loaded pressure plate when squished in

@@paulbrett9964 yea man you have the parallel one you need the other one 😁😁👍👍
@@paulbrett9964 it looks like a y shape
Perfect, i will order one right now. Thanks for the help. 👍👍👍
great video on that rear diff. can you please tell the part number for the shims i need? i just got a new EXB i want to top off all my diffs and of course check and shim the rear. thanks
Cheers man, all the shims and links to them are in the description below the video.
@@bournemouthrc4371 I dont looks to hard just ordered them on ebay some Pro Tek brand 13 16 0.2mm hopefully i have those other ones behind the pin. Not gonna run my EXB until i do this. Great video mate. keep up the great work. be safe.
Cheers man, I'm glad they helped. I hope you get out there soon and enjoy your truck man 😁😁👍👍💪💪
@@bournemouthrc4371 thanks I will 👊
Not sure if I have an old manual or not but it shows the front and rear both use the lsd plates, do you know if this is the correct way or should I only be using the plates on the front and big and small shims in the rear?
For shimming the pinion, I wasn’t able to find the shims that fit inside and behind the bearing. I left the bearings in place and put a smaller shim on the actual pinion shaft and brought in in closer to the crown wheel. Any reason that method wouldn’t work the same?
It should work, I have discussed this before I think a few did it but one person found the pinion chewed the shim up do just keep an eye on it
This is exactly how arrma has fixed the problem. Now the shim kit includes a spacer where you are stacking the eight shims.
Yea I sent this over to them when I did it, seems they liked the idea 😁😁👍👍
Mine is on the way. However it looks like they’re doing lsd in the rear now. I wonder if it would be better to get the shim kit and make it open. My only arrma is the v2 outcast.
@@NavigatorGSX1300BK the LSD works well as well as that takes uo the same space
Super late to the party but i have an issue with this fix. One diff had the pin channel in the sun gear completely sheer off. This fix would only create more of the gap from the pin to the sun gear. Also ive only had lsd diffs and ive gone through 2 with a new one just sitting because i dont trust it. Any ideas?
So it has been 5 months since doing the shimming. How is the diffs holding up? Any failures?
Nope no failures and its used most weekends. Still strong as hell
@@bournemouthrc4371 did you end up doing the same shimming to the front diff also
Yes I ended up doing the same to the front both have been no issues since
@@bournemouthrc4371 Sweet thank you for the awesome videos and fast responses. Stay safe
Cool video buddy this is really helpful 💙hope your all well
Cheers, hopefully it will help the people out there struggling with theirs
@@bournemouthrc4371 no problem
HI what kind of diff fluid are you using now when you shim it. you said 30k on your can i use 10k ? or i should use 30k? its not gonna effect the diff to much is it? making more bullet proof or less ? i would assume 50k is too heavy ?
Hello, you can use what ever diff fluid you want, the change is in the handling of the truck. For example thicker in the rear gives slightly more power out of corners but can slide about more
@@bournemouthrc4371 ok great thank you buddy. 👍 Be safe
Did the diffs hold up after the shims?
Yes they have taken loads of 8s and 6s packs through them now. There is a testing video on my channel as well
Nice vid bro
Cheers man
This states rear diff... would you not treat the front the same?
I Don't know if I want an exb now I am not very good with diffs do you reckon they will fix it in the v2
Yea they were fixed but the second batch of the v1 so any you buy now will be fine
@@bournemouthrc4371 thank god
Can you shim a diff that has LSD plates by removing the plates and following your steps?
Yes you can there exactly the same parts apart from the lsd plates, the Lsd plates take up the same amount of room so you don't need to for strength but if you prefer none lsd you can take them out and do the same as I did
Great Tips , I will try this out too ! Only problem so far is the 13x19 shims won’t ship to US! I’ll try and find some online tomorrow. Unless anyone knows where to source those , Thanks !
Cheers man, hopefully you can find somewhere that does them in the US. I'm sure someone supplies them.
Is this still an issue for arrma? Considering an exb but afraid to buy garbage. I've only had a maxxv2 so far and haven't had to do anything really at all to it
Did arrma fix the rear diff in the exb?
Yes I believe the v2 comes with the LSD diffs all the way around to sort the issues
@@bournemouthrc4371 is that a good thing ?
@@bournemouthrc4371 When will the Kraton EXB V2 be released?
@@larsoost3901 sorry not V2 I meant batch 2 of the EXB. The second batch has the diff sorted i believe
Any recommended U.S stores for the shims you linked? Thank you!
Sorry the best bet would be Ebay that's where I tend to get mine, just type in the size
I used Arrma shims, 12x15.5x.2. So far so good! 👍
Ijust priced it out shipping from uk site to usa the shims for 25 qty is 3.50 and shipping is $38 haha and im still considering it.
@@focusdrivenmedia3436 ahh man that sucks, I cant believe somewhere in the states they dont do these
@@bournemouthrc4371 i can find it at all.
I would (as im sure many kraton owners would) like to know just how much of the new EXB parts will go onto a Normal v4 6s Kraton.
@@bournemouthrc4371Thanks bro - yeah i know u got v4 Kraton too hence i thought id ask if you knew lol ive M2c towers n hingepin holders etc , rpm all round etc - i thought the same in regards to the spur n pinion but wanted your expert advice too. Im thinking i wont nred exb sun n planetary gears ? So to clarify , Just exb crown n pinion on both ? Will shim them too .
Lol sorry read that walking along lol ok so im gonna give the whole diff itself a whirl n see it fits - i will let you know how i got on dude - keep up the great vids - they REALLY helped me and im not new to this truck lol u da man
@@rccircus7271 I'm not 100% sure but I believe you have to put the whole exb diff in as the crown gear has different whole locations for the smaller diffs. Annoyingly I didnt check them when I had mine out. I'm pretty sure you have to use the whole exb or the whole V4 diff. Best net is to get complete diffs from a breaker
I didn’t get any shims in my box but none of my diffs have any play and all diff gears as full with oil did I get lucky
I measured My LSD plates at .6 each 1.8mm total which makes sense as you stacked the under pin shims large small large so the edge of the top large one isn't supported and with a 13mm bore the shims emulating the LSD plates are sitting it large arma shim has a 13.7 OD.
Yes you are right they do over lap slightly, that's also why I went large small large with the lower shims to act as a sort of sprung loaded pressure plate when squished in
@@bournemouthrc4371 I would expect the outer lip to get bent over time I can't see it springing back keep us all informed.
Can these diffs handle 8s?
Bad news....my diff failed with this repair! Took about 10 packs of hard bashing and I thought it was licked.
Not so much. Can we all just get replacement diffs!
Ahh man that's not good mine had about 30 odd packs throughout now. Which part broke?
@@bournemouthrc4371 sun gears. They didn’t actually break 100%. I put it all back together using the LSD plates (bought 3 sets) it’s running again until ARRMA sends a replacement. I don’t think it will hold up for long though.
@@GRIFFINLEVEL3 are man that isnt good, I hope you get your new ones soon and your one holds up until then
Great work and tell how for dummys like me
Cheers man, hopefully it helps you out 😁😁
Why us everyone skipping getting the last gear out, it's always edited out and I'm struggling with it
Could you just fit a v4 diff they seem stronger
I think these shimmed up properly are stronger due to having larger gears for input and crown wheel.
But yes you can put a V4 one in there with the pinion and drive cup from a V4 as well
Open lsd:( noooooo

I will have to stop you on best car and say best car for you
And this can and should be applied to all rc cars, the time taken here is well spent. Few shims saves you the cost of the diff. Excellent overview proves every diff is different.
