    For the past couple of years, we have had Michelin CrossClimates on my wife's car and Toyo Celsius CUV on mine. She drives a Volvo XC70 and I drive a Mercedes GLK, both are AWD. We live in an area where we normally get lots of cold and snow in winter, in fact in this province tires with the mountain-snowflake symbol are a legal requirement from december to mid-march. These all-weather tires are not as good as the very best dedicated winter tires, but they are every bit as good as most winter tires and much better than cheap ones. Between the two, I would say that the CrossClimates are slightly better in snow than the Celsius. Regarding noise, last weekend I went to visit our daughter 600kms away in my car. The noise from the Toyos was never an issue at highway speeds.

      Great input, thanks for the info! When this set of tires expires I'll definitely take a good look at the CrossClimates. Where we live the main issues are braking distance on freeways after a new snow over ice, and crawling ability over those snow berms; the Celsius tires have handled both very well but I am always looking at options. Thanks for watching.

    I bought a 2014 Dodge Charger RT last year and it did amazingly well during winter. The only issue was going up steep inclines in moderate or heavy snow. Couldn't make it to work 2 times because of it. It's crazy you mention the Firehawks in this video, that's the exact tire I'm currently using. It's meh. I've been on the fence getting these but your extremely detailed and well put together review has sold me. I may go with the new Sport Celsius though.

      I'm also interested in the Sport Celsius as an option, when I replace the current tires on my Jeep. I hope they work well for you. Thanks for watching!

    Subscribe for this fantastic breakdown. I was a crew member of a ferrari 333sp and was in charge of 50 sets of tires and rim's for a 24 hour race weekend.

    Good info. Forgive me if you addressed this, but since the all-weather tires have asymmetrical tread patterns, do they have to be run on a particular side of the car or does that not matter? In your example, do you have to keep the jagged center groove to the outside edge of the tire or can you mount/rotate them like any other tire (assuming your vehicle uses the same tire size for front/rear)?

    • @buildingwithbill
      @buildingwithbill  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Jeff, sorry for the slow reply. Good question! I just automatically rotated front to back because I assumed they were directional for that reason. Since you asked, I looked closer at mine and couldn't find an arrow denoting rotation; also, the Toyo web site has makes this statement in their Celsius ad:
      ASYMMETRIC TREAD DESIGN
      Outside of tire for cornering, center for braking and accelerating.
      Inside of tire for stability.
      Enables cross rotation to reduce irregular wear.
      Thanks for watching!

    December 2023 Update: I've used these tires through two Colorado winters and a bit over 30,000 miles of year-round daily driving and am now replacing them because we're heading into a third winter and they are worn to the legal limit for snow driving in this state. They still perform fine, but safety first as winter approaches.
    As I stated in the video an all-weather tire is a compromise concept just like all-season tires are. The difference is intended use; an all-season tire sacrifices ice and snow stopping distance in favor of longer life achieved with harder rubber compounds, while the all-weather tire sacrifices durability for better performance on ice and snow. I knew that when I bought the tires and don't begrudge them their shorter life as long as they do well on our icy roads, which they do.
    My choice for replacements came down to economics: I considered the Michelin Crossclimate and might well have ordered a set, but the price quoted for the new Toyo Ceslius II tires was too good for me to pass up so those are my choice. As for differences between the original Celsius and the new Celsius II, it would appear the new tire has improved tread design for even better traction on snow and ice. Okay-fine, that's certainly appreciated on our icy roads, but I haven't found any info implying improved tread life so I don't expect any miracles there. Rubber compounds that stay softer in freezing weather just can't last as long in hot weather.
    So...as I said in the video, tire choices are based on compromise. I bias my choice in favor of snow and ice drivability vs durability, plus my very real need to have only one set of tires for year-round use including winter conditions requiring snow tires.

    I spoke to a lot of people including my own family members. They are all in denial because they said we have "all-season" tires.

    Overall not bad if not a bit longwinded and could probably have been better if done in under 20 minutes. I run Blizzaks on a 4Runner as I am typically headed out in the middle of a snow storm in order to plow, We run Toyo Celsius CUVS on the wifes Tucson as she typically heads out after the plows have been out for awhile.

    • @buildingwithbill

      Thanks for watching! And yes, it's longer than usual for a typical YT video but old habits die hard: after 34 years of lecturing to aircraft mechanics and pilots I tend to speak slowly and cover a lot of detail. We don't get plowed before my wife has to leave for work in the mornings so after I clear the snow off her Jeep with the Celsius CUV's, she just makes her own tracks until she gets to the main roads. After that all the neighbors just use her tracks until the plows finally come, lol. By the way, if the MN in your YT handle means you live in Minnesota, you probably have way bigger winter issues than we do. When I was with a squadron of C-130's at MSP one winter we saw a wind chill factor of -70 while we were pre-flighting our aircraft. That's cold!

      @@buildingwithbill Yes Mn just off the west runway at KANE Janes Field Anoka, I thought I was going to get tossed sideways doing my first solo cross country in a 152 into Duluth and followed in by a flight C-130s out of MSP the turbulence as I exited the runway was something else. Was that you that followed me in? if so, you owe me a pair of skivvies.🤣

    • @iffykidmn8170
      @iffykidmn8170 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I only assumed they were out of MSP as they routinely do flights into Duluth as you well know. This is the 2nd winter with the CUVs and they are good much much better than any A/S but I do not feel they are quite as good as full on winter tires like the Blizzaks with high silicone content for the last bit of extra grip in the cold temps but at the expense of having to maintain two sets of tires.

    My experience with Toyo celsius is terrible specially on snow and wet surface after being used for about 30k. I was so concerned about the safety of my family that I had to abandon these tires at 40k mark. I am so surprised that you experience was a better one.

    I've seen the 3 peak tyre symbol on nasty Chinese tyres that had no ability in snow. Black Lion tyres were put om my wife's car and they are by far the worst tyre I've ever driven, in any condition. Buy a reputable brand please, she was scammed because I'd ordered the Michlin Cross Climate tyres, they failed to stock those and gave something with "the same pattern" and a refund. I didn't ge tto drive her car for weeks as I work shifts and though the car was in need of repair as it slid everywhere. I returned it but obviously to much time had passed, stuck with them until the first snow came and they didn't work. Then we just binned them and got Yokohama Blue Earth (?) all seasons put on and they were great BUT wore out very very quickly.

    Just my opinion and I agree on the tyres, great in all weathers.
