cant believe the amount of troops which where deployed to such a small area ,compared to the numbers in say the 90's,seems to be a soldier on every street corner
excelent vid lad, video definitely depicts the true nature of the conflict, hit the nail on the head when you mention sureal, wonder if this was a curfew at the time?
As a soldier who served there i can only assume it was to make us stand out easily therefore making a nice fat target for Mr armalite.you wouldnt have got me walking past it or standing there. hope this helps.
Thanks for your comments...I suspect that most of the demolition was geared towards the breaking of community spirit...on both sides...because of the narrow back lanes and interconnecting streets...nightmare for brit military to control...new housing estates built with one way in and one way out...urban planned by the brit military to ensure easier patrolling and checkpoints. Respect to you and yours.
What a lotta nonsense I was born and raised on the Grosvenor Road and the houses where all getting demolished for redevelopment or "slum clearance" not breaking up the communities you half wit The Lower Falls was a mixture of protestant and catholic families but most protestant families where in intimidated to leave or burnt out This video was taken during a curfew that was imposed for 48 hours August 1971 so thats why there are no people about Dont put any credence in what the author has suggested he obviously has never set a foot in Belfast so his "theories" are complete and utter crap By the way i can see my house 35 seconds at 81 Elizabeth St SO WHERE CAN WE SEE YOURS
Maybe it was the threat level mate, not sure. I'd hedge my bets on that though, as your man said "the shooting was most bitter" was this the falls curfew by the way? IF so, thats why the troop level was like that mate. IF not then i dunno.
It has changed so much, going back there now after all this time. It's incredible and they used to sing "...you'll never ever beat the IRA..." Ha back in the day.
No one mention of the nationalist BURNING the protestants out of their home s I see. I remember many protestant families that lived in Ardoyne were burned out. Some of them having lived there their whole lives.
looking at that clip makes you think how close to the brink things must of realy been in the early 70's ,a interesting post
