Beautiful watch - Gets right what most digital watches don't (looking at you, Casio): Big, bold digits and not a ton of "exposition". I wish the screen was a pitch black "slab" when it doesn't display time - the reddish brown with the circle is a bit distracting. But then I'm a big fan of the glass desk in TRON - I can't help myself.

Casio only problem is too much cheap plastic and not enough stainless steel versions of digital watches. Now I understand the reasoning for price tag, but I would rather pay a few bucks more for real metal versions of watches like the Royale. It's so bad that Casio has created an entire after-market mod scene just dedicated to their plastic watches. Beyond that, I don't mind the rest that you mention. They are "God tier" for a reason.

Just a fun information you might find interesting about the name of the brand Gerlach.
Gerlach is the highest mountain peak of 2655m in Tatra mountains in Slovakia (there's also polish side of Tatras). Full name is Gerlachovský štít (Gerlach shield) and it's named after Gerlachov township established in 1326 by four brothers: Jan, Mikulas, Peter and Stefan Gerlach.

    Soviet Cosmonaut: It tells time.

Oops a child of the 60’s myself but it does look a lot like a watch I would beg my dad to buy me in the 70’s. So when I started work I bought a Solar LED (a lot like this one but with panels for solar) from the AA catalogue on the never never as it was £80! Do I want to go back there? No not really but happy memories, thanks Jody. 😁

I got something very similar to this watch around late 70s early 80s for my Christmas when I was around 10. If I remember correctly the face was the same but the case was more like a Casio A158. It was the same push button see time mode and recessed set button. Loved that watch.

I was born in the late 60s and one thing that reissues of LED watches (or LED styles) is that sooo many of them use the more "novel" diffuse LEDs like this one. The most desirable, in my view, are the blade-type LED displays, where the segments are expressed as hair-thin lines of red brightness and not these blocky segments. Alternatively, the dot-segment LEDs are also more desirable. Still, this is great styling. My preference with red LED watches is that they have sapphire or glass, but most have plastic that can gouge pretty easily, so they're not meant for much rugged wear. Great to see this, but it's overpriced in my view and isn't carrying the best LED display to evoke the era properly. Thanks for sharing this.

  • @runningawayvagabond5876
    @runningawayvagabond5876 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Love it! Wayyyyy back in the day when I was just a wee little kid (late late 70's?) I was transfixed by a watch from the Sears catalogue that was similiar to this - red led's that lit up when you pushed the button. Got it for xmas that year and was the happiest kid on the block. No idea what brand it was or specific details but I do remember the battery life was just atrocious and it drove my mom nuts putting a new one in it every couple of months.
10 out of 10 would totally wear this Gerlach.

I've had this watch for a few months. Quality of the finishing is very good and it looks great. Wears a bit bigger than the size would suggest. I eventually sold it because of 2 problems.
    1. The display button was very hard to press and eventually stopped working (due to slack of the module in the case). I was fixed by G.Gerlach (€24,- in shipping costs) but eventually stopped working again.
    2. The date is programmed wrongly and will show a wrong date after a while. I haven't figure out why/when this happens, but it was really annoying.
It is a shame. Otherwise I would have kept it in the collection.

I remember when I was a little kid back in the 70s, getting as a birthday/Xmas present (don’t remember which) in the form of a then ‘state of the art’ LED stainless steel wristwatch. It was circular rather than tonneau shaped like this, from some unknown brand (I might still have it somewhere?) maybe using that same period Sanyo module as that of the Polish cosmonaut’s. As I remember it having that same single push and pen-push time set buttons on the right hand side as this. And the same limited time/date/month/seconds functionality too.

The idea behind was to make a piece as close to original as possible. It was operated this way, had a date & time only. Sure we could make an all-time glowing piece, put a ton of functions there, and I guess a modern battery would stand a year without any problem. But it would not be the same vibe if you know what I mean. Plain&simple, just as it used to be when I was a little boy.

Perhaps one can be purchased for $280.00 in the links, but a quick search on eBay showed only one listing with a buy it now price of $359.00 (with free shipping!). Like you, I see the appeal with it’s nostalgia and design, and like you, I get this... though I have no intention of getting one 🤦🏻‍♂️ Great review, Jody! Thanks!

I bought a similar watch from Walmart a couple of them to get a retro vibe. It features the SAME color as this probably adopted from the idea and lasts oonger I am temping to add this one to my collection.

Hoping you might get your hands on Bulova's re-issued Computrons! And Hamilton is re-issuing their Pulsar, but that one is a bit more expensive.

A little odd, but very charming. Kinda like you, Jody!
I kinda want one, just to have a really oddball watch in the collection!

Did they change the module on this at some point. In your thumbnail it shows a small red marker at the top of the time shown, I presume it's the day of the week, as I have similar modules fitted to my collection of led watches. All the photos I have seen of this watch have the red marker but the one you have in your hand when filming does not. Just seems to be a bit strange.

That is a great retro-futuristic looking watch, I think Hamilton just released a similar one if I am not mistaken?
