Great video Alan Clyde, you should do a “money no object” video showing where you would like to see the farm going and improvements you d make going forward
I agree with you we have tryed several brands of tags they are all crap. We were TB testing other day to tacke cattle to mart. 1 steer had lost boath tags in between the few days of injecting and examining.
Sheep tags can be quite temperamental too me and my dad where getting some lambs ready for the mart did not have to many problems next day helping my nabour get some lambs ready for the same sale and pritty much all the tags broke as soon as they made contact with the ear absolutely useless
My father Bought a bull off your da late 90s, millwater jonathan super bull out of Cloughead bull. Had him 2 months and lost him to black leg. Good to see yous still have quality stock Alan!
Do you think its worth getting into purebred lims? At the moment we run a mixed 40 head suckler herd and was thinking going into lims or another respective breed. Lims always have a bit of a market but I'd like your advice on it
Well I wouldn't like to advise any man on what to do with their enterprise but what I would say is if you get into the pedigrees try and start with the best female you can source/afford. So many pedigree breeders across all breeds you need to have something special to stand out. It's always tempting too to keep on all your heifer calves just because they are pedigree but I think you need to be strict with what replacements you keep. If quality cattle is a real passion I would suggest looking at a few pedigrees as a hobby rather than business. You can strike big but a lot of the time its a costly exercise breeding bulls
I don't like pushing cattle to hard it doesn't do them any good In the long run for breeding stock anyway, especially bulls I spoke to an old boy who's keeps alot of beef cattle over the years and he was telling me that hes had big limousine, Charolais and blue bulls that are absolutely massive cracking animals that go lame and have back problems and don't make it 5 years. Where as he's had bulls that grew that little bit slower wer not pushed so hard grew more naturaly and they arnt quite as heavy but there the ones you want, at the end of the day your after the genetics of the animal not the fat on its back
Good video, I agree with the saturation of pedigree limo and Charolais cattle, there will always be a market for top pedigree stock but it’s seems to be you have to Chuck a lot of money at it, a lot of work and a bit of luck to get the top money. What do you think is the secret to getting the top prices, paying for premium semen, showing, or just keep being strict and breeding the best?
there's definitely a lot of work and luck needed. Dunno if i'm the man to answer that as ive never hit the big time. we were normally selling quite a lot of bulls so we tried to use the best blood lines we seen merit in and afford, put as little input feed wise into the bulls and aimed for a healthy average price with better margins because of the lower input costs. Game def has changed, need to be strict with breeding replacements(i know it can be hard especially if your trying to build up numbers and im guilty of keeping ones i shouldnt. Just because semen is dear doesn't gurantee success. Follow the sales and shows, use your eye and keep an eye of what crosses seem to do well
Hi Alan, i rely enjoy ya videos, what models are ya two new holland tractors, & what make & models did you have before them. Your a grafter Alan & deserve a bit of luck.
Need to try Enduro tags (www.endurotags.com.au), we have had much better retention of tags since switching from Allflex in all our cattle. Still lose the odd one but a lot better than before. Unfortunately, doesn't look like they send overseas at the moment, so not much good to you. Really enjoy the vids, keep it up.
Yhea get rid of the bad cattle and start being a bit more particaler with the cattle and hopfuly there Will be a bit more money in the cattle there is always a premium on well bred stock
Go freshy cows, those should sell OK, also where l stay cows are in in September most years, so along winter, no use in keeping passengers, get them away and get afew pounds in the bank.
Unfortunately the AG sector is on the gutter at the minute. I feel yea man on having to make the tough calls on the cows but what has to to be has to be. As the old farmer saying goes " next year will be better "
