Thanks to everyone who took the time to watch the video and to those of you who understand 'why' I felt a duty to make it. There are so many comments here, and also emails, facebook messages etc, that I have been unable to respond to everyone individually - Overwhelmingly everyone has been really very, very kind and supportive, so thank you. Yes, there are some comments about how being Gay is a sin, it's unnatural, and I shouldn't bring this topic up. There are those of you who say there is no need to make this video and this is the first and last time they'll watch. There are some who still think that being gay is a choice or a preference, despite me trying to explain that it is not.
For those who haven't understood why I felt the need to make this video, let me explain again. Yes, it's 2024, and people say it's not an issue, but I'm sorry to tell you that it is. LGBT people are still being persecuted, marginalised in the world. Even in the UK, attacks on LGBT people are still happening. And LGBT people of my age, grew up with Government sponsored repression, social stigma, bullying and rejection. An example - my teachers would mock Gay people in class, and everyone would laugh - not me of course. And all of that hurt takes a long time to shake off.
Against that context, when you take a typically male-dominated pass-time/profession in aviation, it is perceived as not a place for LGBT people. I can attest to that. I thought I would be rejected from it - in actual fact I haven't been - but it's that perception we need to address, which is the whole point of the video, to let future generations of LGBT pilots know that it is a safe and welcoming place for them.
As an additional point - It is true to say that I have been 'out' on the channel for some time. This isn't a 'coming out' video. I get some stick for being gay on here sometimes, and It's very unpleasant at times, but I felt I had a duty to make a bigger point, and to also explain WHY I want to be open on here as a public figure. The messages I've had from LGBT people privately since making the video confirms that it was a good decision, as it has helped them in some way. Fly safely my friends.

@@TheFlyingReporter i’m sorry mate but you just don’t get it. As you said, you thought you’d be rejected. This is your problem that you felt that way. It’s just not the case that people are geld back because of being gay. @@stevefairclough1021 ridiculous comment. The point is, it doesn’t matter who you are, what you are. If you have a desire or dream to do something, people aren’t going to hold you back because of sexuality etc. it’s self perceived as an issue. Sadly, it’s folks like yourself, calling people unsavoury names that causes such division and further contributes to any problems. Generations before mine were certainly not accepting as we are today but that’s not the fault of those today who are accepting.

Could you do an interview series when you interview other aviation gays. Always with the focus on aviation, but with notable gays. Maybe pride fly-ins or tours. Maybe time for a new rainbow paint job on G-IV.
Could you offer flights to one of the gay charities?

As others have said, it shouldn’t matter one bit, but it clearly does to many people, so well done. I hope it’s a weight off your shoulders. It’s actually a positive for me - I respect your honesty and courage now, as well as your excellent presenting skills, quality content and flying.

    Hi Jon,
I’m a retired airline captain but I also did many other jobs for many years before I started flying. I can honestly say that commercial aviation was by far the most inclusive job that I ever had. There were many times that I operated as part of a three crew team when I’ve been in the minority as a straight man. It never crossed my mind for a second that it would course an issue or concern me in any way. The wonderful thing about flying and working as a team, is that the only thing that matters is how good you operate as an aviator.
I’m glad you got it off your chest but sad you felt you had to.
    Fly safe😀

Inclusion should be absolutely second nature, regardless of sexuality.
Nobody chooses who they love and it certainly shouldn’t matter to anyone. I feel sad and proud that you feel you have had to do this Jon, I fully support that you have.
We should never forget the prejudice that the gay community has faced for decades. We must learn from it and ensure we only progress in the right direction.

As a Trans Lesbian, I started Pilot some years ago prior to coming out. Unfortunately, I paused my training as i reached a point where i could not afford it anymore but also to focus on my transition. During my journey, I became aware of my social anxiety and quickly learnt that phobia and lack of knowledge are common place across all walks of life even within the LGBTQ+ community. I have learnt to deal with these issues on a as it happens bassis, prefering to educate rather than retaliate. A stratogy that has worked well for me. Now, having transitioned fully and at peace within myself I feel ready to restart my pilot training I am just saving up to get enough money behind me to have a buffer to accommodate the fluctuations in expense. It's not aviation that is at fault, and I am strong enough now to put aside the misconceptions and focus on my learning. It is youtubers like yourself that have kept my passion alive for aviation and I cencerly hope that your message in this video gets across. Thank you. And keep aviating. XxxxxX

I am a 60 year old Male, not Gay, but our age group has lived through that period in history that saw a change from it being illegal to even admit it, and then to now where it is so OTT that it’s bonkers! My take on it (having several gays in close family) is that fully understand where you are coming from, it should not even be ‘a thing’ that you have to tell your private life to all and sundry, but because you hid it all this time, it’s been a Herculean hill to climb over and now come out. You did the correct thing and handled it 100% the best way. Life is not fair , but as I always say, at least we have lived our lives, in a country where freedom is allowed (well up to now anyway!) wish you and your family all the best for a great rest of your lives!

Going to be completely honest. I'm bisexual. I don't really care about if you are gay or your sexual orientation, not my issue.
What is my issue, is people being against it, being homophobic. I'm glad that you have made this and hopefully supports others and raises awareness throughout the many echelons of aviation.
I also like that it's just a fact about you as I do feel and have experienced people who's whole sexuality is their personality. Now I'm not against that but I am not froends with those people in the same way as I'm not friends with those who don't have similar interests etc.
Video is great and hopefully the world does change to a point where sexuality is just a fact, which imho it should be.

"It feels like there's been a concerted effort to attack people with minority gender identities" Feels? Where? Don't you watch mainstream TV? A large majority of men on TV are gay. Most comedy show or light entertainment has gay frontmen. I watch a lot of political You Tube channels, and I counted up, 3 of my favourites are gay! Where are you seeing this? Where do you go? Schofield 'came out'. Thirty years ago it would have been a shock, a scandal. But no one cared. Hugh Edwards. No-one cared. its mainstream. Being straight now, on TV is unusual and weird, and gets jokes on left wing comedy shows.

But your personality is also very important and makes a lot of the content what it is. You should be able to freely be yourself and people should be judging you on the above and nothing else.

I do think it’s hard for those who have never been a minority or marginalised to understand the constant apprehension that exists when walking into a flight school for the first time, visiting a new airfield, travelling to other countries, job interviews, even walking into a pub, etc. and wondering if your sexuality will be an issue or if we will be discriminated against. Thankfully my partner and I have always had positive experiences but that doesn’t take away that this is our lived experience and I know others experience the same. I feel that society as a whole is much more diverse and accepting these days compared to the 70s that I grew up in, and thank god we can all for the most part live the lives we want these days without prejudice. As a pilot I find your videos very helpful and informative in making me fly better and safer. My thanks

Damn, I was hoping for something really juicy!
You do you, Jon, screw the haters. I enjoyed your videos whilst I trained over the last few years, and I enjoy them now as a brand new know-nothing 737 pilot. They remind me how important the fundamentals of flying are, and to keep my knowledge fresh.
Keep putting out fantastic content, keep flying safely, and keep enjoying what you do in the sky and on the ground.

Thanks for this. I wanted to fly GA since air experience in chipmunks at RAF cadets. I went to chat with the CFI at my local club in the 90s and concluded that, as a gay man, I wouldn't fit in. Even in a 20 minute conversation there was assumptions I was straight, and a couple of vaguely sexist comments about my presumed girlfriend. I didn't pursue it.
Times have moved on but aviation still has that slight macho, golf-club feel about it. People don't always realise that it's easy to create an uncomfortable environment even you don't intend to. It's also true that some of us of a certain age still carry the baggage of the hostility and stigma of the 80s and 90s and are guarded about our private lives or authentic selves.
I'm a member of that club now and might even do my first solo later today. I'm more comfortable but haven't talked about my family with my instructor.
    Visibility is important.

Even in the mid to late 1990s when i learned to fly as a 20 year old there were lots of gay pilots. In our gay youth group there were at least 3 more guys with a pilots license. I’ve had a gay flight instructor and still meet lots of new gay pilots now. Sometimes i thought we were grossly over represented in the sport and industry. I always felt that gay guys just have a better appreciation for the human nature interaction that is aviation. Same thing for women. there are lots of female pilots, instructors, mechanics. It annoys me that people think us gays need some sort of special consideration. We are already everywhere! People should do what they want to do and think less about what other people think about them. I watch your videos not because you’re gay but because they are well made and engaging. A good mixture of fly along and information. No annoying techno beats (that last one i really appreciate!)

Hi Jon. Another great video. I'm 62 years old so have lived through the era of gay being 'different' but that in my opinion, was many years ago. If you had mentioned it once and carried on with the commentary I wouldn't have given it a second thought but I can see that you needed to get it out there so well done you. I'm sure 99% of intelligent people understand that we are all different in various ways and being gay is just another facet of your character. Keep up the splendid videos!

By sharing your story, you’re undoubtedly making a positive impact and helping others who may feel they are alone in their journey.
Your passion for flying is infectious, and your dedication to being open and genuine only adds to the respect and admiration I have for you. Please know that I, along with many others, will continue to support your channel and enjoy the wonderful content you create.

Hi Jon, I've been a fan / follower of all of your videos... I am not a pilot, but I have an interest in aviation which started when I discovered MS FS, many years ago. You disclosed the fact that you were gay (without shouting it from the rooftops) quite a few years back. I'm straight and always have been, but I have nothing but admiration and respect for what you do and how you do it. I love your videos with your husband and son and I wish that I had the security of a loving family like yours. Anyone with a brain will admire your professionalism and skill both in flying and in presentation, and will be drawn into the natural warmth of your personality. You're gay, and as you said in the video, that's you! I really think that if people can't accept that, the problem is with them, not you! Keep on doing what you do in the way that you do it. You're a great entertainer, and quite clearly a great father and partner, and I, for one, will remain a loyal viewer, eagerly awaiting the next exciting instalment of whatever you're discussing. Congratulations on being you.
