Thanks to everyone who took the time to watch the video and to those of you who understand 'why' I felt a duty to make it. There are so many comments here, and also emails, facebook messages etc, that I have been unable to respond to everyone individually - Overwhelmingly everyone has been really very, very kind and supportive, so thank you. Yes, there are some comments about how being Gay is a sin, it's unnatural, and I shouldn't bring this topic up. There are those of you who say there is no need to make this video and this is the first and last time they'll watch. There are some who still think that being gay is a choice or a preference, despite me trying to explain that it is not.
For those who haven't understood why I felt the need to make this video, let me explain again. Yes, it's 2024, and people say it's not an issue, but I'm sorry to tell you that it is. LGBT people are still being persecuted, marginalised in the world. Even in the UK, attacks on LGBT people are still happening. And LGBT people of my age, grew up with Government sponsored repression, social stigma, bullying and rejection. An example - my teachers would mock Gay people in class, and everyone would laugh - not me of course. And all of that hurt takes a long time to shake off.
Against that context, when you take a typically male-dominated pass-time/profession in aviation, it is perceived as not a place for LGBT people. I can attest to that. I thought I would be rejected from it - in actual fact I haven't been - but it's that perception we need to address, which is the whole point of the video, to let future generations of LGBT pilots know that it is a safe and welcoming place for them.
As an additional point - It is true to say that I have been 'out' on the channel for some time. This isn't a 'coming out' video. I get some stick for being gay on here sometimes, and It's very unpleasant at times, but I felt I had a duty to make a bigger point, and to also explain WHY I want to be open on here as a public figure. The messages I've had from LGBT people privately since making the video confirms that it was a good decision, as it has helped them in some way. Fly safely my friends.

Sorry we live in a world where you feel you have “to get it off your chest”. Not a nice feeling to have the anxiety of feeling that you have to explain who you are. Probably not a bad thing to weed the intolerant out of your follower list ;) just be you and carry on Captain. Jase

@@TheFlyingReporter i’m sorry mate but you just don’t get it. As you said, you thought you’d be rejected. This is your problem that you felt that way. It’s just not the case that people are geld back because of being gay. The bigger problem is when measures are taken to discriminate against none ‘marginalised’ demographics- this is the biggest danger my friend. @@stevefairclough1021 ridiculous comment. The point is, it doesn’t matter who you are, what you are. If you have a desire or dream to do something, people aren’t going to hold you back because of sexuality etc. it’s self perceived as an issue. Sadly, it’s folks like yourself, calling people unsavoury names that causes such division and further contributes to any problems. Generations before mine were certainly not accepting as we are today but that’s not the fault of those today who are accepting.

Could you do an interview series when you interview other aviation gays. Always with the focus on aviation, but with notable gays. Maybe pride fly-ins or tours. Maybe time for a new rainbow paint job on G-IV.
Could you offer flights to one of the gay charities?

I thought you were going to reveal something terrible after reading that video title. The actual reason should be a non-issue in this day and age. I mean ... what has one's sexuality to do with aviation anyway? People shouldn't care about it either way. I hope most of your viewers see it the same way.

As others have said, it shouldn’t matter one bit, but it clearly does to many people, so well done. I hope it’s a weight off your shoulders. Hi Jon,
I’m a retired airline captain but I also did many other jobs for many years before I started flying. I can honestly say that commercial aviation was by far the most inclusive job that I ever had. There were many times that I operated as part of a three crew team when I’ve been in the minority as a straight man. It never crossed my mind for a second that it would course an issue or concern me in any way. The wonderful thing about flying and working as a team, is that the only thing that matters is how good you operate as an aviator.
I’m glad you got it off your chest but sad you felt you had to.
    Fly safe😀

It was pretty clear that you were gay early on, but that made not one jot of difference for me. If you feel you need to talk about it, then good for you, and if you want to keep it private, good for you too! As a Trans Lesbian, I started Pilot some years ago prior to coming out. Unfortunately, I paused my training as i reached a point where i could not afford it anymore but also to focus on my transition. During my journey, I became aware of my social anxiety and quickly learnt that phobia and lack of knowledge are common place across all walks of life even within the LGBTQ+ community. I have learnt to deal with these issues on a as it happens bassis, prefering to educate rather than retaliate. A stratogy that has worked well for me. Now, having transitioned fully and at peace within myself I feel ready to restart my pilot training I am just saving up to get enough money behind me to have a buffer to accommodate the fluctuations in expense. It's not aviation that is at fault, and I am strong enough now to put aside the misconceptions and focus on my learning. It is youtubers like yourself that have kept my passion alive for aviation and I cencerly hope that your message in this video gets across. Thank you. And keep aviating. XxxxxX

So happy for you John that it mattered for you to explain, but it really shouldn't be of any consequence to anyone as far as your flying and video making is concerned. It should be of no consequence to anyone other than within your private life. It's just so part of being a human being and it will make no difference at all to this subscriber!!

I am a 60 year old Male, not Gay, but our age group has lived through that period in history that saw a change from it being illegal to even admit it, and then to now where it is so OTT that it’s bonkers! My take on it (having several gays in close family) is that fully understand where you are coming from, it should not even be ‘a thing’ that you have to tell your private life to all and sundry, but because you hid it all this time, it’s been a Herculean hill to climb over and now come out. You did the correct thing and handled it 100% the best way. Life is not fair , but as I always say, at least we have lived our lives, in a country where freedom is allowed (well up to now anyway!) wish you and your family all the best for a great rest of your lives!

"It feels like there's been a concerted effort to attack people with minority gender identities" Feels? Where? Don't you watch mainstream TV? A large majority of men on TV are gay. Most comedy show or light entertainment has gay frontmen. I watch a lot of political You Tube channels, and I counted up, 3 of my favourites are gay! Where are you seeing this? Where do you go? Schofield 'came out'. Thirty years ago it would have been a shock, a scandal. But no one cared. Hugh Edwards. No-one cared. its mainstream. Being straight now, on TV is unusual and weird, and gets jokes on left wing comedy shows.

But your personality is also very important and makes a lot of the content what it is. You should be able to freely be yourself and people should be judging you on the above and nothing else.

What is my issue, is people being against it, being homophobic. I'm glad that you have made this and hopefully supports others and raises awareness throughout the many echelons of aviation.
I also like that it's just a fact about you as I do feel and have experienced people who's whole sexuality is their personality. Now I'm not against that but I am not froends with those people in the same way as I'm not friends with those who don't have similar interests etc.

Have recently come across your channel and it has reminded me of how much I used to enjoy flying and how my lack of confidence let me down when it came to going solo. For that reminder of the fun I shall always be thankful. Your sexuality is your business and in this day and age no one has the right to judge and if they do so in a negative way that says more about them than it does about you. Thanks for this. I wanted to fly GA since air experience in chipmunks at RAF cadets. I went to chat with the CFI at my local club in the 90s and concluded that, as a gay man, I wouldn't fit in. Even in a 20 minute conversation there was assumptions I was straight, and a couple of vaguely sexist comments about my presumed girlfriend. I didn't pursue it.
Times have moved on but aviation still has that slight macho, golf-club feel about it. People don't always realise that it's easy to create an uncomfortable environment even you don't intend to. It's also true that some of us of a certain age still carry the baggage of the hostility and stigma of the 80s and 90s and are guarded about our private lives or authentic selves.
I'm a member of that club now and might even do my first solo later today. I'm more comfortable but haven't talked about my family with my instructor.
    Visibility is important.

Damn, I was hoping for something really juicy!
You do you, Jon, screw the haters. I enjoyed your videos whilst I trained over the last few years, and I enjoy them now as a brand new know-nothing 737 pilot. They remind me how important the fundamentals of flying are, and to keep my knowledge fresh.
Keep putting out fantastic content, keep flying safely, and keep enjoying what you do in the sky and on the ground.

Hi Jon, Love your videos, glad to have met you on a few occasions and hope to see you more, one day have a flight with you. Really not worried about your sexuality. You are a great pilot and I'm hoping to be as experienced and confident as you. You have also inspired so many people in the GA community, especially me from the start!! There will always be someone who doesn't agree, thats the world though, so don't worry just be you. We all love you in our home!! 😊

Hi John! Thank you for making this video. I’m a gay pilot and this does matter, a lot! I do think it’s hard for those who have never been a minority or marginalised to understand the constant apprehension that exists when walking into a flight school for the first time, visiting a new airfield, travelling to other countries, job interviews, even walking into a pub, etc. and wondering if your sexuality will be an issue or if we will be discriminated against. Thankfully my partner and I have always had positive experiences but that doesn’t take away that this is our lived experience and I know others experience the same. Seeing your video and reading all the amazingly supportive comments genuinely makes me feel more confident to just be me in aviation. Well done and keep up the fantastic content! (Also, would it be reasonable to arrange an LGBTQ+ fly in?)

By sharing your story, you’re undoubtedly making a positive impact and helping others who may feel they are alone in their journey.

Glad you felt able to get that off your chest Jon. I feel that society as a whole is much more diverse and accepting these days compared to the 70s that I grew up in, and thank god we can all for the most part live the lives we want these days without prejudice. As a pilot I find your videos very helpful and informative in making me fly better and safer. My thanks

Well done Jon. Worth saying. I liked that you'd not made a big thing of it up until now, but that it was there as part of you in the videos. You've had a very good reception (publicly) for a good reason. I liked that you addressed why you needed to say something - a reflection of your own personal experience as part of who you are but one that provided a small (and insufficient) barrier to your getting into GA. But it recognises that other may see the barrier as higher, but your message may lower that a little as people realise there are people like them or at just different from the usual white male middle-aged hetero types.
Your videos remain top quality and informative. Your journalism background shows through so strongly. Chapeau!

As a fellow gay pilot who does this for a living, I think it's very encouraging to put out videos like this. Visibility matters for those who feel oppressed. While I was lucky enough to never feel oppressed, perhaps why I have never been the kind of person to join lgbt organizations or participate in pride events, I still think it's important that people feel and know that things they have no control over don't limit them in their endeavors. I fly private jets for a living, which is known to be not quite as accepting as airlines when it comes to these kinds of thigns. Though I never tried to hide my private life, nor did I ever advertise it. It was a "don't ask don't tell" of sorts, which I realize doesn't do any favors to the people looking to get into this. So I'm glad you've made the decision to publish this video! Happy flying!

I personally have said for a long time that Aviation is one of the best communities to be in. because it doesn't matter. it doesn't matter who you are, where you come from, your background, colour of your skin, your gender, your political alignment, or even your sexuality. All that matters is your interest in aviation. and I believe that we are one of the most accepting communities out there besides music and cars. now speaking on a personal level, your actions to me have spoken louder than words ever could. You go out of your way to be nice to everyone and say hi to everyone! It shouldn't matter to people who you are in a relationship with. You ARE a good person Jon, having met you a few times, and your persona on the channel. You are in a loving family which is clearly evident in past videos, and you promote one of the best communities on earth in such a positive light. and that speaks volumes. So what if a few people brand you as woke, we don't want them in this community if they can't be respectful. we're in aviation, we should be able to rise above it (both literally and metaphorically) carry on being yourself, and never stop being yourself! :)

Hi Jon, I've been a fan / follower of all of your videos... I am not a pilot, but I have an interest in aviation which started when I discovered MS FS, many years ago. You disclosed the fact that you were gay (without shouting it from the rooftops) quite a few years back. I'm straight and always have been, but I have nothing but admiration and respect for what you do and how you do it. I love your videos with your husband and son and I wish that I had the security of a loving family like yours. Anyone with a brain will admire your professionalism and skill both in flying and in presentation, and will be drawn into the natural warmth of your personality. You're gay, and as you said in the video, that's you! I really think that if people can't accept that, the problem is with them, not you! Keep on doing what you do in the way that you do it. You're a great entertainer, and quite clearly a great father and partner, and I, for one, will remain a loyal viewer, eagerly awaiting the next exciting instalment of whatever you're discussing. Congratulations on being you.

This makes my blood boil. Not because you made this video, but for the fact that you had to.
I love your channel, and I love your content. It is absolutely phenomenally well made, relevant and interesting. I'm as white, middle aged, and straight as it gets - and that means I have ALL the privileges available in the game of life. I would love nothing else for your (or anyone not identifying as a heterosexual) sexuality to be as much of a a non-issue as it is for mine. But it is not about me. It is about YOU, Jon, and it is about representation. Few things are more important to enact change in society than representation, and I applaud this video. The sheer size of your brass balls (pardon the expression) for not only openly telling the world of when you make mistakes as a pilot (as a relatively newly minted SEP pilot, I've learned a ton from your debriefs), but also using your platform to make this video. You, Sir, represent everything that is good in the aviation community.

I have worked as a freelance broadcast cameraman for the past 30 years (one time Met police officer when "gay"was illegal ) One of my great friends and a work-mate is a freelance sports writer /news reporter/ journalist - with whom I have worked for several years - who is "Gay". He is a great friend and his sexuality is totally different to mine ( married-3 kids - umpteen grandchildren) and we have quite a lot of "banter" about his sexual choices being different to mine . We also have friends and relatives of differing sexuality to my own . I am also a PPL holder - having about 600 hours P1 - now lapsed due to my age (83 plus) but still working - drones/camerawork etc). I have only within the last week discovered your channel as I am - according to my wife - "obsessed" with aviation videos - having owned a Cessna 172M & shared a 182Q over the years - I regret not having worked at school and made it my career. I like watching your videos - and am interesting in the flight aspects/communications/systems that are included within them. I have no interest whatsoever in your personal sexuality - finding you an exceedingly nice person to follow, listen to and watch - performing your skills with an aeroplane. I find it difficult to understand why you would want to make this particular video and "put yourself in the firing line" to attract comments that you might find hurtful - but you clearly have reasons - which I respect - for doing so. However - I like what I see of you as a person - love your videos - your private life is your business - I will continue watching your Channel and videos - and wish you every happiness and success in your aviation and life in general. I think you are a great guy - hope your honesty in declaring your position is respected and I look forward to seeing all your content ! I wish you well !
