It’s so good to see so many people showing appreciation for the SMS. I was the only kid on my block that owned one. Everyone else had the NES. I loved this system. Over the years I had lost it from moving. I purchased another a couple years ago and have collected 42 games since. Still one of the greatest I say. Awesome list friend!

SHIFTY never played that one but looking to explore more games on the system as I only have 7. The Mickey Mouse games were pretty good for the time, also really like prince of Persia but I prefer the 80/90s stuff because not only were they the games I grew up with but they just have that charm to them that I don't think the realistic modern stuff has. Don't get me wrong, I do really like the assassins creed games on the newer systems and it's incredible how technology has advanced but I always go back to playing the Master system, snes or megadrive. Wonderboy 3, Alex Kidd, Zillion, Action Fighter, Space Harrier, super games on SMS! I play SMS since 80s and love it to (8) bits! Cool channel, wizzgamer!

Golden axe was my favorite, I recall playing the game after school everyday. Back then Sega was hard for my family to afford getting it for me, so i played it in a shop near the school
I had that game for Master System but I still played it at the arcade (corner shop). The arcade version allowed you to be the gnome and the bikini chick. And two player was great.

Wow nice video. Some of these games I never even heard of. I also did not know that Shadow Dancer came to the Master System. I must say that this is the first top Master System list that I have seen that excludes Phantasy Star.
The Master System really had atrocious sound compared to its contemporaries (Commodore 64 and NES). But some games somehow were magic with their soundtracks, like the top 3 in this list. It goes to show it was great with the right programmers.
The master system that I got for Christmas of 88 came with hangon and safari hunt built into the system with the little hidden maze game. Man I love that system, and I still have it.
To be fair Streets of Rage 1 and especially 2 on the Megadrive/Genesis was untouchable. Any other version would struggle to live up to that. Plus the Master System version lacked the killer soundtrack of the more powerful 16 Bit system.

Damn... I have to say that I totally disagree with that list! From number 10 to 25th, saved by P. Fox and Sonic, seams like it’s a “worse SMS games” list :| You ignored almost all the classics (many people here already mentioned some). Not having include Phantasy Star was unforgivable!!!
@@jamiew1664 It was built in to the original Master System as a “hidden” Easter Egg game. But the Master System II (the one with built in Alex Kidd) didn’t have it.
That's the thing with SEGA "fans". They always ignore actual SEGA classics and focus more on Sonic than anything else. Alas, SEGA themselves also have fallen in the same place as well. Yes, I know SoR4 is coming, but what else is there? Other than lazy compilations. (Genesis Mini excluded. It looks great so far)
There is no thing as too much Sonic. But this list is lacking a lot of great games for sure, like Kenseiden, Fantasy Star, Astro Warrior, Karateka, Asterix and A LOT of others.
Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Golden Axe Warrior, and Wonderboy in Monster Land are all arguably top 5 games on the system yet are not even included! Make sure to check them out as well guys!
With exception of Shinobi and Wonder boy 3, I have not played any of the games on SMS. Zillion was another good game on the Sega master system as well.
Did you know that for Fantasy Zone, I was able to plug in my turbo Genesis controller into the SMS? Worked like a charm & I was able to achieve a super insane high score.
@@jamesfrankiewicz5768 I tried my turbo controller on every game I could play with. I noticed that whenever I played Streets of Rage 2 with Max and slammed somebody, my points quadrupled.
I agree. I love the Genesis but the conversions on the SMS just aren't meant for 8 bit hardware. They tried but I wouldn't put any in the top 25 games.
Good list i loved golden axe in arcades so was a bit disappointed that it only had one character on ms it was still a fun game, one of my favourite games was g-loc a kind of after burner type game.
Jogo número 2 do Alex!!!!! Me fez recordar dele, bem lá no fundo da minha memória!!! Como pude não lembrar mais desse game, senti a mesma sensação bacana que sentia quando jogava na época! 😱😱😱
Ah, the good old, underrated Sega Master system with it's superior 8 BIT graphics. Brought back memories watching this video with some of the games in the list. Glad I've got one again, but I need to get more of these classics! Cheers for the upload.
The only ones that I had in my collection on this list were: Golden Axe (on the Sega Genesis), Batman Returns (NES), Shinobi, Operation Wolf, and Sonic The Hedgehog. Sad that you never got to play Choplifter or it would've been on your list, too. =)
Always wanted one growing up. I had a C64 at the time. The commodore 64 had it's own charms but not like this. The master system will be my next buy I think.
Agreed. The charm of the C64 is it’s music and sound. It beats every other system of the day (including Master System). And also for how far the developers stretched its capabilities (e.g. compare it’s early 90s games to it’s early 80s games). But the actual games were usually better on the Master System. Especially arcade conversions. Edit: If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the amazing Sonic The Hedgehog port for the C64. The only thing it requires above a stock C64 is more RAM. It looks as good as the Master System and has the distinctive VIC sound. Oh and the C64 has the full Super Mario Bros. too (using just 64K RAM).
Twas my second ever games console, after the Atari 2600. Wonder Boy III is the bomb! I quite enjoyed re-playing it to the end a few months back. Also Played Psycho Fox and Castle of illusion a few weeks back. Still a great console to own and game on, for sure!
My friend had a master system when I was 5 years old in 1990. We always played Sonic and Alex Kidd in Miracle World on it, andJurassic Park later in 93. I had an Amiga 500 myself which had amazing versions of some of the same games such as Rainbow Islands and New Zealand Story. What an awesome time to be a kid.
A lista é boa, mas faltaram muitos clássicos como Bonanza Bros, Alex Kidd in Shinobi world, Kung fu Kid, Masters Of Kombat, Danan the jungle fight, Streets Of Rage, Black Belt, entre muitos outros...
Number 1 definitely deserves its place. I bought the recent updated version on PS4, still great and the newly updated graphics and sounds are really good.
If it would have sold good in US, Sega would have had huge edge on Nintendo. When you compare Sega genesis to SNES it is obvious that genesis has more limitations than snes. And still Sega would score a tie agains super nes. Nes had better games than master system but master system had much more powerful hardware than nes, the gap between those two were wider than the gap between snes and genesis, genesis was just little less powerful than snes but master system was moderately more powerful than nes. Nes still had more games and most importantly more good games. Imagine if master system would have had just two hugely succesful game franchises in US. It propably would not still outsell nes but it would have tightened the sales gap between them, would have made Sega household name (before genesis), build a fanbase and customer base etc. Genesis could have the edge on launch if Master System would have reached its full potential. You gotta remember that pressure since the war between 16bit consoles was so tight and bloody, atleast partly was responsible for making Sega of Japan allmost panic and make stupid decisions.
@@joonaslehtonen7965 That is incorrect the SNES had far more limitations then the SEGA Mega Drive. The SNES couldn't process the speeds of the Mega Drive couldn't hold frame rate as well as the Mega Drive, as well as loading was poor on the SNES compared to the SEGA Mega Drive. Another incorrection even though the Nes had more games then the SEGA Master System they were not well made the speeds were very poor on the Nes the frame rate worse the graphics couldn't even process proper quality pixels as well the Nes had far worse hand controllers then the SEGA Master System. The SEGA Master System was greatly more powerful then the Nes had far superior frame rate superior pixels the best in any 8BIT console in history not even graphics on computers could match the Master System. The graphics on the SEGA Master even were more superior then the SEGA Mega Drive when pushed to the limit on some games. The Nes could never hope to achieve this. The only reason we should all know now Nintendo was more falsely popular was because they were incredibly greedy slave drivers taking all the best 3rd company parties for themselves during the 1980s SEGA and Atari were the companys that suffered. If SEGA had any of the 3rd parties working for SEGA SEGA would be in the state NIntendo is in now and Nintendo would be struggling.
The only problem with SMS was the lack of 3rd party support. Nintendo settled a devilish - and smart - deal of exclusivity with all the best softhouses at the time, leaving SMS with a limited and inferior game library compared with NES's.

@@jamiew1664 th-cam.com/video/-rb9pyRdaH0/w-d-xo.html
@@jamiew1664 It was built in to the original Master System as a “hidden” Easter Egg game. But the Master System II (the one with built in Alex Kidd) didn’t have it.
No choplifter? Hang on? Too much Sonic!!
It looks great so far)
hang on was so good
choplifter was the very first video game i ever owned or played, i was hoping it was in the top 10, double dragon too. at least shinobi made the list
World Cup 90 gave me blisters on my thumbs
Did you know that for Fantasy Zone, I was able to plug in my turbo Genesis controller into the SMS? Worked like a charm & I was able to achieve a super insane high score.
I didn't thanks for the tip :)
Yeh, thanks for that!
Oh yeah, ypu could use your Genesis controllers for the Master System and Atari 2600...if I remember correctly, well one of the old Atari machines. ;)
Atari (prior to the Jaguar) and Sega (prior to the Saturn) both used the RS232 Serial Port as their controller port for their various consoles.
@@jamesfrankiewicz5768 I tried my turbo controller on every game I could play with. I noticed that whenever I played Streets of Rage 2 with Max and slammed somebody, my points quadrupled.
I was dubious about some of your choices, but your number 1 is spot on :)
Aljax79 Johnston Thanks :)
I just have good memories.. thank you for that.
Jogo número 2 do Alex!!!!! Me fez recordar dele, bem lá no fundo da minha memória!!! Como pude não lembrar mais desse game, senti a mesma sensação bacana que sentia quando jogava na época! 😱😱😱
Your number 1 is spot on. I still remember the cheat code for this game!
R-type, Golvellius, Phantasy Star, Zillion, Zillion 2, Master of Darkness...
Golvellius! Great shout, I loved that
Rtype
Speelcaster...
You missed out on the Rocky boxing game for the Master System. Brilliant game for its time.
I remember sonic being preinstalled on the master system 2 I had, good times
Ah, the good old, underrated Sega Master system with it's superior 8 BIT graphics. Brought back memories watching this video with some of the games in the list. Glad I've got one again, but I need to get more of these classics! Cheers for the upload.
R Moocher Thanks for watching :)
@@wizzgamer All good.
I love Castle of Illusion. But Land of Illusion was bigger, beautiful and harder.
Sweet. I replayed castle recently, but I've gotta get round to playing land, which I haven't played before.
Land Of Illusion was indeed better on every aspect.
This list really needs:
Golden Axe Warrior.
Spellcaster.
Master of Darkness.
Great vid though ✊
Master System has so many good RPG´s as Phantasy Star, Golden Axe Warrior and Miracle Warriors. Should have at least PS on this list.
PS or Aztec Adventures, Cyborg... there were quiet a lot.
Wonder boy was my fave too, along with double dragon, shinobi and altered beast. Also loved to play california games!
The only ones that I had in my collection on this list were: Golden Axe (on the Sega Genesis), Batman Returns (NES), Shinobi, Operation Wolf, and Sonic The Hedgehog.
Sad that you never got to play Choplifter or it would've been on your list, too. =)
Great video. Several games on this list I never heard of that seem like really good games.
So many great memories from this little machine !
Space Harrier, Zillion, The Ninja!
Yeah too bad Zillion is not on the list.
I had NES, which was great, but I kinda wish I had a SMS. Looks really well done.
Do you have a Master System, Boodro?
So many great memories of the Master System - my first gaming console. Wonderboy III was amazing.
same here ^^
Wonder Boy III, The luck dime caper and Castle of illusion were the best
Awesome line up bro
Number 1 definitely deserves its place. I bought the recent updated version on PS4, still great and the newly updated graphics and sounds are really good.
Parlour Games, Quartet, Penguin Land & Astro Warrior were some of my favs. Glad to see one of the Alex Kidd games made the cut!
Masters system was allmost like 12bit console, superior in graphics when compared to nes.
it's true, I wonder how it isn't as popular in N.America as the rest of the world
If it would have sold good in US, Sega would have had huge edge on Nintendo.
@@phantasyboy1031 Cry moar.
The only problem with SMS was the lack of 3rd party support. Nintendo settled a devilish - and smart - deal of exclusivity with all the best softhouses at the time, leaving SMS with a limited and inferior game library compared with NES's.
nice video brings back so many good memories of the best times of gaming with my Master system back in the good old days
Thanks for watching :)
Where is: After burner, thunder blade, space harrier, galaxy force, phantasy star, taz mania, quartet , zaxxon 3d, kenseiden, r-type, assault city, e-swat......??
I remember Endura Racer being very enjoyable.
A list of best SMS games without phantasy star is a fail
Not everyone likes that game including me, its just opinions.
Epic fail...
Wow Alex the kid in miracle land brought back memories brilliant 👍🏻
I miss star wars and asterix but its a good top 25
I was getting worried in the top 10 that wonder boy 3 wouldn't be there! Glad it's number one! Psycho fox, Wonderboy 3 and shinobi are all number 1 in my opinion!
The best version of Double Dragon is on SMS.
No ....the best double dragon is
SUPER DOUBLE DRAGON
For Super Nintendo
th-cam.com/video/8xq6OJdpx_k/w-d-xo.html
@@shaokahn4384 No the SEGA Master System is far better
@@phantasyboy1031 the game for super Nintendo is amazing....it's timeless .....beautyfull game
I love the master system....my first console....
But double dragon on snes iz the better game.no doubt
@@shaokahn4384 No the SEGA Master System version is timeless ahead of it's time revolutionary not even the computers graphics in 1988 could adapt the power and precision of the SEGA Master System. And that is 8BIT more amazing then the SNES especially you could also play 2 player both Billy and Jimmy with equal brilliance the Nes and Atari couldn't even do that.
@@phantasyboy1031 I think super double dragon for snes is the best game of this kind of games.
Better than turtles in time
Better than Batman Returns for SNES
Better than Streets of Rage for Sega Genesis
Better than all Double Dragon Games
Maybe you had a beauty full time with this game for Sega Master System.it's because of your memories. But it's not better than for SNES....no no no
I had a master system as a kid. I had Double Dragon, Ghostbusters, Kenseiden, Global Defense, Alien Syndrome, Columns, Space Harrier, Shooting Galary, R-Type, Zaxxon 3D, Missle Defense 3D, Hang On/Astro Warrior, Monopoly, Spellcaster, and Outrun. Good times!
Kenseiden, Lord of the rising sun, Spell Caster, Golvellius, Zillion I & II ... Some games were better than some available here ... Excepted if the criteria was "Top 25 Sega Master System ARCADE games"...

The Dragons Trap at no1 and rightly so. An amazing game! It's remastered now and on all platforms. Ps4, Xbox, Switch etc...Surprised California Games was not on the list.
Wonderboy 2 Is my favourite but Is not on the list!!!!!
Yup, best game on SMS.
Enjoyable video, and I agree with your No. 1. I would definitely have included the following in fairly high places though: Out Run, Paperboy, Wonderboy in Monsterland. And, am I right that there was no R-Type in that Top 25?!
