    Which commentary is recommended for someone who preaches regularly but has not been to seminary.. so they are pretty much a lay person... but this commentary still helps them get good insight, background, and revelation. ? ? ? ? ?

    • @PastorTanner
      @PastorTanner  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would start with good single volume commentaries. Look into the New Bible Commentary. Pillar series is great for more in depth treatment of the New Testament.

    for the most part, TH-cam "commentary reviews" seem to be preaching to the choir? they seem geared toward seminary students, other pastors, and scholars? but what about ME, an ordinary, average, typical, run-of-the-mill, par-for-the-course, unremarkable teenager with her first bible? it's all a bit discombobulating, but this vid' helped immensely.... thank u kind sir :) i'am looking for a commentary for newbies... but maybe a study-bible is what i should be looking for (sigh)

      Thanks, Amanda. I think you would be well served with the following solutions (in this order).
      1. Study Bible - (ESV and CSB and several others are very good)
      2. Single volume commentary - (Bible Knowledge, New Bible commentary)
      3. ‘Expository’ commentaries can be very devotional. I like the ‘Welwyn’ series

    what's the difference between exegetical and homiletical ? ? ?

    • @PastorTanner
      @PastorTanner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Exegetical typically deals with more academic and grammar level study.

      Great question. I would say that they are mixed, but mostly lean towards the exegetical and explanatory. Hope that helps.

    I’ve recently come across some commentaries that are labeled as “Socio-Rhetorical” from authors such as Witherington, Keener, and DeSilva. Would you mind explaining that and also where in the spectrum this would fall in? Also maybe the purpose of such commentaries and it’s target audience? Thanks!

    • @PastorTanner
      @PastorTanner  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, these commentaries a quite similar to my second category, but with their area of emphasis on the historical context in which the book or epistle was written. The 'socio-rhetorical' part is the part that is focused on historical context. They are certainly more 'academic' than my third category, but they don't deal as much with direct exegesis as they do with background and contextual data. You might think of them as expanded versions of cultural of bible backgrounds commentaries.

    I'm looking and highlighting page one in Genesis... Jesus said we won't die, infants belong to the kingdom of heaven, and he was rissen to say the least, gen 1.. seems . To suggest... That the air ... Above the earth... Is a part... Of heaven... So is it a parallel demension that we can in fact live in? We just are so lost to the ways of the world we can't find our own connection to (not sure Adam called him God 🤯)source? (Enoch may have never died in the flesh 🤕🤔)

    • @PastorTanner
      @PastorTanner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there is a lot here to unpack. It is important to recognize that the heaven and earth distinction is just part of how ancient man broke up the world. He often used these categories to distinguish between the material world and the spiritual world.

      @@PastorTanner I seem to read that all life .. (with the potential exception of marine life) is of heaven 🤔 birds fly in, Jesus existed in, Adam and his descendants 900+ years, seeming to suggest the key to heaven is inside of all of our minds, our perception determines heaven or earth(hell?). What is bound on earth/heaven, what is loosed on earth/heaven.. right?

      @@jakejohnson3145 Our minds have the POTENTIAL to be spiritual. This is why Paul teaches us to be TRANSFORMED through the renewing of the MIND. Romans 12:1-2
      Also, we are told to set our minds on the things above.
