Could someone explain why the presence of a permanent magnet near the sensor would not cause a problem?

Hi there, thanks for your question! The eddy currents on the target are the key interaction between the target and the sensor coil. These eddy currents create an AC magnetic field that interacts with the sensor coils magnetic field, which creates a frequency shift on the sensor magnetic field that impacts the inductance. The AC magnetic fields are not impacted by nearby DC fields, which is why permanent magnets do not affect the inductive sensor. @@TexasInstruments So, there is AC induced in the coil which in turn causes eddy currents in the conductive target. That results in a change in the impedance of the coil which is to what the sensor circuit is responding. Most magnets are not conductive and if they were they would become "targets" as well.
(I think that "...shift on the sensor magnetic field..." might be -...shift on the sensor's magnetic field...?)
