Highly unlikely, though they may redesign it to close to the new mini’s size. It might end up being as small but much taller. Past SSDs on mac minis have had the storage controller integrated into the M-series chipset. Is this one different? If not, no user-replaceable storage.
I don’t really kbow MacOS, if we change the SSD with a reference we buy somewhere else, are every SSD compatible (are we apple locked) ? And is it easy to install MacOS on an empty storage ?
are you sure that storage is user replaceable? would there not be some pairing between the motherboard and the storage? or the controller is onboard with only the nand being on the daughterboard, like in the studio?
this video was great because I like teardowns in general. Mostly I feel like Apple gives you some but not all of this, and I like to know what I'm purchasing without taking my own unit apart piece by piece, so thank you.
OK, I'm convinced. Upgrading from my 2019 16" MBP to a M4 Mac Mini. Apple nailed this. I can't ignore such a good price vs performance. Given iBoff RCC has shown upgrading Mac proprietary storage can be done, the base model is a steal.
How bad will repair costs be after applecare expires? If my RAM dies does apple charge new prices for replacement parts? Is owning a Mac past the 3 year apple care period to risky?
"user replaceable" needs some qualifications, as it still a proprietary board, and will require a 2nd Mac to get working again? Is the power transmitted between the boards via the standoffs?
Yes, you'll need a second Mac with the installation utility, because the SSD contains all the system data (that in the old days were stored on EEPROMs or the like) and security data. So even if you find an SSD to install in your Mini, you'll need to initialize it externally.

The design and engineering is profound. Apple should be truly proud of this fantastic device. So impressed, the best computer ever made, ever. Great to see the teardown, it restores faith in humanity. Good video.
Really? Glad you can say that.
@@otwer22 Is there a better machine ?
I wanted the Mac Mini Pro with 2TB storages and 64GB memory. ❤❤❤❤❤❤😂🎉🎉🎉😅
Wow, it looks beautifully built! Such a small but powerful machine. Who would've thought!
This is amazing!!! The BEST computer in the world!!!! Incredible work
Mac Mini is the new King of Upgradability!
Only if it will be available on aliexpress. With apple you still pay 200$ for 512 gb
@@punisher15101993 Externall SSD Nvm2, 4TB is cost 300 USD.... Enjoy :)
You would think the king would make it possible to upgrade the memory.
It isn't upgradeable though...
@@Aethid Unless Apple changed something, historically you just buy flash storage from Aliexpress, main issue is you need another mac to reprogram the SSD, but the actual process is quite straight forward.
Cool. Where do you get the storage boards? Can you go further than 2 TB on the M4 non pro?
Following you guys since 2019. I bought my 2019 Two Thunderbolt Port MacBook Pro after watching your video.
This was the video I was waiting since Apple introduced M4 Mini.
Thanks a ton for the work guys!
Ah, that was a fun video. 🙂
The new Mac mini M4 looks good!
What an amazing machine! But what do you thing about M4 Ultra, will it ever be made or Apple is done with multiple chips together?
I was waiting for this !
Always stoked for your coverage during new product launches. Looking forward to the M4 Pro comparisons. Hoping you’re doing a comparison of the binned vs non binned M4 Pro too!
Well done max, now assemble again
Already did. Runs great!
Avengers assemble!
@@MaxTechOfficial please test replaceable storage
who is the guy making the replaceable storage chips for the other apple machines?? thanks
this is the question that needs answering!
here you go: www.kickstarter.com/projects/polysoftservices/studio-drive
How does that work? Luke Miani tried to upgrade them by swapping chips from other Studios and it didn’t work. He only managed to get them to work if he swapped chips with identical storage. It’d be awesome if it does work, but since that kickstarter campaign doesn’t ship until December at least, we won’t find out until then.
This is literally an UNBOXING 😂😂 nice work thanks for your videos. They helped me always a lot. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Would love it if you could test out the difference between the 12 core m4 pro and 14 core m4 pro mac mini's. Especially the thermal throttling and heat.
GREAT NEWS!! This SSD is "normal" or Apple only? Can I replace it by any of the small ones on the market? Thanks for the video!
I never would have pegged you as an Apple hater or an extreme Apple fanboy. Your whole channel just compares Apple to other manufacturers and highlights how amazing Apple is.
You obviously don't watch all of our videos.
I love it so much! Do you guys think this is the end of the Mac Studio though? Not that I mind, I’d just like to know. Thanks!
Highly unlikely, though they may redesign it to close to the new mini’s size. It might end up being as small but much taller. They can’t really discontinue it because the mini is still an entry to mid-level desktop while the iMac is only an entry-level. If they got rid of the Studio, they would have no more high end Mac desktops.
Nice one. Can't wait for your M4 Pro & Max deep dive comparison videos (real-world benchmarks, fans, battery life, etc.). Anyway, keep it up guys! And please, never go too cringe or clickbait. Your audience appreciates it in the long-term. Thanks.
That thermal paste is applied beautiful but why not on the entire chip and memory... I think repasting with a good paste will improve the cooling whatever the chip is.
*Would* it have been easier? I mean, im sure it would have been cheaper to do that for one, but im sure it was cheaper for them to make it modular to reduce the number of different configurations and toolings they had to have
I’m super curious how you repasted the mac mini, and if so, how are the thermals?
I wanted to get back to Apple mid summer... found out we had a cycle update for the mini coming and decided Ill wait and see what we get and Im impressed
They owe all the customers that bought the old Mac mini an apology and a free upgrade. I can’t believe I paid $1300 for a Mac mini m2 with 512 GB of ram. And now they’re selling an M4 with 16 GB of ram for 600 bucks. The worst part is that you can’t upgrade the memory of the ram on the old minis.
Great video! Thank you guys!
As always great informations - thank guys
Can to put the performance difference between each varient of m4 like 8c/8c in imac, 9c/ 10c in ipad pro and 10c/10c in ipad pro and all other macs (mac mini and macbook pro) please 🥺
Waiting to see if it’s possible to mod this mini to run off of 12vdc like my old mini. Better for operating in a hamshack or mobile situation.
i dont know how many year that will take me to buy that m4 here in kenya...maybe 20yrs..you guys will be at m15 chip..
I'm dying to see actual performance measurements. My 16 core arrived today but I'm wondering if I should have bought the 20 core... here's hoping you have both to test.
Engineering at its best. Hats off to apple engineers!
Hello ! Very nice video. Do you think it’s possible to power the Mac mini by thunderbolt port ?
Is the ssd a proprietary Apple design, or will a usual commercial ssd work?
Why the CPU cover with the apple logo doesn't made with copper to increase the heat conduction speed or its because there will be unwanted electric conduction? What material used for the chip silver looking apple logo cover then?
Past SSDs on mac minis have had the storage controller integrated into the M-series chipset. Is this one different? If not, no user-replaceable storage.
I enjoy this tear down because it’s so raw 😂 want to know if it survived! 😂
I don’t really kbow MacOS, if we change the SSD with a reference we buy somewhere else, are every SSD compatible (are we apple locked) ? And is it easy to install MacOS on an empty storage ?
how feasible is it going to be for the average joe to upgrade the SSD in the Mac mini at a significantly cheaper price than at checkout?
are you sure that storage is user replaceable? would there not be some pairing between the motherboard and the storage? or the controller is onboard with only the nand being on the daughterboard, like in the studio?
So will there be aftermarket SSD’s available? I know the apple SSD’s aren’t the fastest
2:17 “alright we got the clip” lmao
2:24 "oh no guys, we got a crack" delayed realization?
I didn't even get my new Mac mini yet and he already broke his. 😄
No ground on the power, so if you plug it in a hot outlet what happens? Just wondering.
Incredible engineering! Go Tim 🍎 !
That's is actually a MAC-mini you bought from AliExpress that has a Raspberry Pi inside 😅
this video was great because I like teardowns in general. Mostly I feel like Apple gives you some but not all of this, and I like to know what I'm purchasing without taking my own unit apart piece by piece, so thank you.
tsmc SMIRKING at that Apple logo
So does it mean if i get M4 Pro and i will just keep the storage at base? Buy my own M.2 NVME to replace it?
So where can you purchase the SSD for these new Mac Mini M4's?
I was waiting you guys!
when do the comparisons drop, been waiting on you guys as so many others have dropped videos but i dont buy until you guys do your deep dive
Planning for tomorrow :)
@@MaxTechOfficial awesome looking forward to it
OK, I'm convinced.
You both should do these. Max rationality and Yuv enthusiasm. It would be a hit.
Or at least give the poor guy a microphone so that his voice is not so off axis!
Amazing. Will the SSD in the M4pro be replaceable as well?
Apple is cooking something else bro 🔥🔥 this is the real deal. God bless Apple 🙌
Great Job team! 👍Thank you so much for making this great vid. I can’t wait to get my own Mac Mini M4 pro. This makes waiting a bit easier.
Why am I so into these videos when I have no intention of upgrading my M2!!!!
We gotta look at our future (4 years later options)
That’s incredible!!! You guys are awesome 😊
Can you actually just replace the storage though? Is there no software lock of some sort
