It’s like the duck on the surface of a pond, all the work happens underwater! It’s a challenge for me to make all those long notes, I really have to focus on a maximum breath every time. Especially before a crescendo or one of the low Cs
Hey Mike, I just want to say you have become an idol for my school’s bass trombones, and we’re all striving for your beautiful tone. Keep doing amazing!
Awesome! Like the smile from Tubist behind you! Would be great to have Tuba behind me in band or orchestra, so used to having them on my left and in front of me usually with Euphoniums between us in band. Always feels so distant from them.
Mike, you legend! Crushing it as always! Hope you're doing well. If you're ever in Colorado let me know, I'll fire up the computer and we can play a little Privateer 2: The Darkening. 😂
I’m a bass trombonist in high school and even after 11 years of playing my pedals aren’t that clean 😭 I practice so much aswell but god dang your pedals are so beautiful yet so powerful. 2:22 holy mother of god 😩 that was incredible Love from Sweden
sounding amazing! i wanted to ask if you de-lacquered your horn yourself? if so, how did you do it? also, do you find that a de-lacquered horn plays different or is it purely cosmetic? thanks!
This is my Mount Vernon Bach bell from 1953. When I bought it several years ago the lacquer was very spotty and in bad condition being so old, so I had my tech remove it. I’m not sure I really noticed a difference in how it plays. You can do it yourself but I’m too busy these days!
Amazing sound, Mike! I want to ask you, how do play pedal tones for so long? Is it simply a matter of breathing in a very large amount of air? Or are you very efficient with your air usage? I know it's not really the right place to ask, but some tips would be greatly appreciated.
Both! The main question is how do you increase air efficiency…..I’m not sure I have ever actually figured that out 100%. Buzzing helps. Relaxation helps. Play many long tones!
Hi Mike, what a shift between pedal sound and marvelous long notes blended beautifully within the orchestra! Was that a 4th (contra) part played by a Bass?
This is the 4th trombone part, Strauss doesn’t specify bass or contra, but he only wrote for contra specifically in his opera Elektra, so we can assume he wrote this part for bass trombone. It lies very well, and I can tell you having played it twice on contra, it’s much easier on bass trombone!
Hi Brian, all my bells are set up to be interchangeable to both my current valve sections. Yes that’s my MV bell on my Thayers. Which I never really liked before until I tried them with a different slide which now is my favourite horn! Every change makes a difference
@@mikeszabo5631 Love all your posts! I admire you as a bass trombonist and especially as a musician. Your romeo and juliet video inspired me to switch from bass to tenor hopefully next year my director lets me!
Incredibly rich sound as always Mike. This piece would make me go light headed but you seem to have air to spare lol.

Amazing your pedal tones!
The tuba player behind you also had a satisfied smile on his face.
Man you have such a wonderful rich sound! And when the tuba joins you at 1:19, omg that note sooooooo damn rich!!! Sounds great man!
Hi Mike! Just returned from the concert. We listened to Tchaikovsky and Scheherazade. Magical music!
Thank you.

Such an amazing sound you make. It gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. And being backed up by that tuba is just the cherry on top

YEEESSSSSS MIKE SZABO UPLOAD
What a rich sound even in the pedal register directly facing the camera! Whos the 2nd tubist who was sitting behind you in this recording?

Is this your MV? Did you switch up the valves?

Thank you very much!
Hey Mike, have you ever played a Contrabass trombone?
Yes I have! Please check out my Wagner Ring excerpt video I did a few years ago

Tips on how to get better tone on bass bone? My low register sounds good but your edge is insane, especially the low D-B range just above the pedals.
Very nice sound !
Wow 💪💪💪💪🤩🤩🤩🤩i have to practice 🙈🙈🙈
awesome!
Hooary! Mike posted!
