Hi! I use both tubes and pans. There is 2. Ml usually in a half pan so tubes are a bigger quantity. So it comes down to cost. The Schmincke are the same, so I go with the tubes. I enjoy your art! Thanks! Note, I find more contrast when these paints dry! 😊

To be fair you should fill a pan with tube paint and let it dry first.

As @daniellabammert7791 suggests fill a pan with tube paint and let it dry. But, before it dries Get a wet weight, and after it is completely dried get that weight. Next do a comparison of pigment load by wetting both equally and swatching each respected sample.
@@baldwinleatherworks😂I’ll save you the headache: each 5ml tube will fill a half pan about 2x and that’s being filled, allowed to dry, filled even more, repeated until the pan is actually full and dried without/before actually using the paints. This of course, is completely dependent upon the colors as some are thicker than others have more/less binder in them, so you may get up to a third pan in there for some.
I just filled the whole 48 Primatek line from tubes to pans, and from both 5ml and 15ml sizes, so I can speak from experience there.
@@Lacroix999 thanks, but you’re not the weight of the pigment. Instead, you are listing the volume. Volume and weight are two very different things.

Maybe others have said, but the tubes are way cheaper in the end you get a lot more paint and it’s really intensely coloured. Honestly, that is waaaay too much paint from the tubes. Cakes are the same paint, dried into shapes. But it’s hard to match the intensity of tube paint! Granulation is when the paint colours separate. Don’t use too much paint at a time.

While tubes ARE more cost effective in the long term, they’re not as quite as much as we think they are when we remember that as the paint from the tube dries in the pan, a majority of it dries up. To add to this, when used straight from the tube, you’d still tend to use more paint than you would from a dried and reconstituted pan.
@@Lacroix999 Agreed, one tends to wash the palette clean when there is still loads of paint on it.
Not all granulating colors are color shifting. Some are singular colors but. They have a granulating ‘effect’. For example, The red will just separate and granulate. It does not have a second color mixed in with it. When you have two granulating colors mixed you can see the two color shift when they are dry.
especially that volcano red and volcano yellow...SINGLE PIGMENTS...therefore...no other colour to peak through.
From your demonstration, it seems the pans are the same as the tubes. The tubes allow you to control the amount of paint used.
Thanks for this video. I don't have any paints by this brand but I've been curious, and I love granulation since I paint a lot of desert landscapes. I prefer to buy tubes because it's a better value. I fill my own pans from the tubes, and when the pans start to get low, I just refill them.
You get double the amount in the tubes, because the pans hold 2,5 ml only. So if the cost is the same for a set of 40, I would definitely go for the tubes 😊I buy tubes and squise the colours into empty pans, a little at the time, but the good thing is, that you even have the benefits of the tubes if you are going to paint with, for example, a credit card 🤗 Good luck ❤
I think you can actually make 2 paint pans from a 1 5 Oz tube. If you do try to make pan paint from tubes there is a very specific way to put tube paint into pans so you end up with professional looking pan. I just bought some Daniel smith tubes I am putting in pans because I found the tubes on sale. And it's true. You do use way too much more paint working from the tube. Just remember the 'dry' pan paint has to be reactivated before you get results.
This was for me in the right time...I buy this week exactly the same serie but blue underwater colours and made the same test as you...for me the tubes are better price . Have a fun and thank you for sharing. Much love from Spain ❤❤😊
I go for tubes all the time over pans. They’re better value in the long run and u can put them in your own pans.
I think it is Sennelier...the cost of a 10 ml tube = the same as a half pan...I was shocked to see this...I think with the HALF PAN...you are also paying for the convenience of it ALREADY IN HALF PAN FORM...as to make a half pan from a tube...you need to 1. label the pan with brand/colour number/colour name /pigment numbers in colour 2. Make at least 2-3 top offs of the pan with the tube of paint...as they shrink a lot...from water evaporation..so it is a LONG PROCESS...and needs a drawer to hide from critters and dust while drying....This can take over a week to make one half pan!...that is fully dried and brimmed to the TOP OF THE PAN...LOTS OF ORGANIZATION involved...keeping track of the tubes...to use for the 2nd and 3rd fill...I would say maximun 10 half pans at a time...unless you have a special set-up...This is why half pans are MORE EXPENSIVE to start with...me thinks.
I have an assortment of 14 Schmincke supergranulating colours, 12 pans and two tubes. I prefer the colour separating ones. I think the advantage of tubes is you can fill at least two half pans and put them in separate custom palettes - that's what I've done, anyway- but generally, I prefer pans over tubes. I recently bought the set of 22 White Nights granulating full pans and they're pretty good. I'm waiting for the new Holbein granulating colours to become available in the UK as I just love granulating colours. I'd like the full set of the Shmincke, but they're bit out of my price range to buy outright - I just buy the odd one or two now and again. If you usually prefer pans, then it's probably best for you to go for pans. Go for it!

Hey love, interesting exercise.....it looks to me that you have a single pigment granulation (the red),and 2 paints with 2 pigments each....what I've learned is that a decent amount of water is needed...as for pans and tubes, I personally love pans...have a look at Kuretake Kansai tambi pans the colours are lovely....I think for cost reasons I'd go for tubes because I'm poor!
also...100% cotton rag paper...like Arches 140lbs..../300gsm cold presses will yield...with A LOT OF WATER...the best granulation results
So, for a 5ml tube, you can fill one half pan atleast twice depending on the color, some more, some lots more, like 3x, HOWEVER, that’s not to mention that when you fill a pan from a tube, that’s not to account for that while the tube has more paint, it’s also in a wet state of being so it WILL look like more since the pan is on a dry state.
Pans are more convenient, unless you only need a small amount of that one color, but tubes are a far better long term investment especially when the tubes are a larger (usually 15ml) size.
As far as your technique goes for these, adding a lot more water and pushing around the pigments makes them do their magic best!
Tubes are usually smoother than pans which require more water to reconstitute them which makes sense.
If it were me, I personally would purchase the pan set shown here and let me explain. The pan set for these if you’ve never swatched these before purchase, won’t know if you’re going to love these or even need the tubes to refill these colors. To add to this, the tube set doesn’t look like it comes with a palette for wash color and for me and this many colors, I’d want more space to do so more than just a mixing palette that’s shown, so I’d have to purchase a separate one to fill these colors up in, plus my time to do so when I could just get the prefilled pans with the work already done for me in the pan set. Then if I like the colors and use them up from there, I can purchase new tubes to refill them as I go.
I just bought the whole entire individual 48 tube line of the Daniel Smith PrimaTeks and that took HOURS to fill and label and three days to dry out and keep refilling to fill up my pans all the way before I could store my palette for it after I did so!! Then I had to swatch them all out and put them in order. It was a lot of work! As much as I prefer tubes, I’d still want prefilled pans to start out with if I had to do it over again! I’m sure it saved me tons in the long run (IF I ACTUALLY use all these colors) but the hassle wasn’t worth it to start off with had I just got the pans ready to go from the start for me.
great point here...labour intensive...except...Daniel Smith primatek paints give no options for single half pans...just tubes...so you have NO CHOICE BUT TO DO all the work...if you want half pans or full pans...jut labelling all the half pans and keeping trach of where you are at...labour intensive for sure...I would also recommend Martha go for the half pans to start with....just being sure to leave a spritz of water on the pans....for 5 minutes before use...and it would be the easiest.
1/2 pans hold 2 to 2.5 mls of paint when you fill it let it dry then fill it up to the top and let it dry again. The tubes are 5 mls so technically one tube will fill two pans. You could get the tubes and fill up your own pans and put them in a portable palette.
Much better deal to get the tubes. You get twice as much paint for the same cost.

Even a 5 ml tube can fill a half pan 2.5 times. Plus when I took a half pan out of my Schmincke paint set, the pan itself was more shallow than the half pans I bought from Amazon. So a 5ml tube might fill a Schmincke pan 3 times.

Exact same paint in pans and tubes from Schmincke. Tubes contain much more paint.

When I need to refill my pans I get the tubes. As you say you can get twice as much paint for your money and that seems to be whatever brand you use ❤
Tubes r more cost effective.
The tube paint is squeezed into pans, let them dry b 4 use, about 1 day.
Granulating paints means the size of the particles of pigments used r larger so u get a granulated (larger pieces of pigment) appearance to the paint once it has dried. For example.....Sugar can be purchased as caster sugar, which has fine grains of sugar and dissolve much more easily compared to granulating sugar....i hope i havent confused u and all more! lol
Different colours separate because 1, 2 , 3 and sometimes more, pigment colours r used in one tube/pan, this has nothing to do with the word granulation, as explained in sentence before.

Pans must be wet down before use. That will reactive the paint. Working with a dry pan paint and comparing it directly to tube paint, which is already activated, is kind of not the best way to compare. I love your comparison, which shows me the difference. I've never seen this kind of actually side by side and it shows me some things I was doing were making sense!!
Your probably putting to much tube paint on the palette
The color in the half pan berry looks more like a berry color in my head when I want a berry color.Ive never played with the tube's myself.
I've heard over and over that most artist use way too much paint from tubes and it ends up costing much more. And almost everyone ends up putting their tube paints into pans anyways.
It’s not wasting it if it can dry and be reconstituted and used again unless you mix them too much and just create browns or black/grays all the time and don’t need it and end up wiping/washing it away.
This is why learning in-depth color theory is helpful as to not be wasting it all the time.
I agree, when I use tube paint, I tend to pick up more with my brush than pans, and there's more wasted for me. A lot ends up getting washed off my brush into my water. Yes, you can let them dry and reconstitute it, but I think the person meant waste in the manner I mentioned as being my problem.
The tubes contain water, I think and the pans are more concentrated. I think with tubes, you are paying for water. But as someone else pointed out, you can refill pans with the tube paint and let it dry. The brokenness is the granulation.
If you use paint fresh from the tube you will go through more paint.
Granulating paints have larger particles and they separate as they dry. The letters and numbers (usually under the name) tell you which pigments are used. More expensive paints use higher pigment/filler ratios. Kristy Rice is much better at explaining paint differences than I am. Louise de Massie?(Unsure of spelling) has a video of granulating paints from a different brand. Cobalt blue is usually a granulating color. The red isn't showing a color change because it's a single pigment color. I prefer buying single tubes because I have favorites that get used up and less favorites that seem to last forever. It's always an individual choice because we all have our own styles. Kristy even has her own paints and focuses on florals. Let us know what you decide please 😊❤
yeah, I use Cobalt terquoise light often, the pigment can be mixed in to get a lovely green like the colour of my picture, however it is a very granulating colour
Wet the middle more so you can pick more paint
The berry/purple color might have been so different because it came from dry pan instead of wet tube, the drying brings out the purple it seems?
Red, being a primary color possible won't change color
Personally, I have found that the formulation differs from pans and tubes, especially Qor brand. I have these watercolors that you are describing and I have been very disappointed with their lack of quality. I do like tubes so I can put the watercolor in different palettes. Daniel Smith has some very good granulating watercolors as well as Roman Szmal. 🎉
maybe using clean brushes will help not mix the colors and make them look different

It specified on the tube box that there are only 2 color changing pigments. 🩷🩶
