Essentially, your answer is right - that no change occurs in Atman on account of sufferings in Naraka. However, according to Garuda Purana, upon death of a person, after performance of ten days' rituals, the Pindas given forms a body of the deceased, known as YAtanA SharIra, a body intended only for suffering pain in the Naraka. Thus, another body and not Atman suffers the pains of Naraka.
I just finished reading the Garuda Purana and found no contradictions to Bhagavad Gita. Chapter 16 of Garuda purana is in complete agreement with Chapter 8 of Bhagavad Gita. Verse 8.27 of Bhagavad Gita is the conclusion of Garuda Purana. - Sarveshu kaleshu yoga yukto bhava arjuna. Regarding your current question - read verse 50 in Chapter 1 of Garuda purana once again. "daghdhe dehe punar deha pindair utpadyate khaga" The dead person gets another body strong enough to endure all that torture and experiences the pains. He can do this only because the Atma is still alive and occupies the new body.

Please think logically....
Logically not matching with BG and Garuda purana..... And also. advidata and Divtaha ... Where is naraka and Sa
Atmaakke enu madlikke aaglilla andru atmakke sukha dukkada anubhava aagutte. dehada nimitta madikondu dukhada anubhava aatmakke kodutane paramatma. Tamoguna lepa virodarinda dukkada anubhava aatmakke agutte
This could indicate that dwaita siddanta is true. If everyone is God then God is punishing God for his bad deeds in naraka which has no logic
