    I’m not sure why others like cold starts but I like them for a few reasons one is the sound that the engine makes when they go plus it’s a good way to see strong the engine in a way. One thing I have learned with diesel, they don’t give up until they just can’t go anymore.

    Never heard of an electric fuel pump on an old body style truck. But you are one of the very few that know how the glow plugs work on these trucks. When it starts fireing I don't let off on the starter until it's running on it's own. Works every time.

    • @diymechanictv1233
      @diymechanictv1233  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, this truck has upgraded (larger) injectors so it requires more fuel than the stock, mechanical pump can supply which makes it necessary to upgrade the fuel system. It's running a stock Super Duty Bosch pump now.

    • @keithhicks1403
      @keithhicks1403 ปีที่แล้ว

      I learned this long time ago back in the eighties when a diesel has a push and pull lever to turn it off it don't need electric fuel pump but if it don't have a push and pull lever to turn it off it has to have electric fuel pump to turn off the fuel to turn it off

    I love these diesel but after watching a ton of videos , for a lot of cold starts definitely should get a block heater. Would save the rods and block a lot of struggle and crazy expansion. Engines breathe!! Expand and contract, warm up and when finished warm down ,, like a dozer. Keep that engine tight and sealed and strong. Should be no hesitation when cutting off should just be silent , that's how u know how well an engine is sealed. Better seal equals better , thorough power. Rock on and stay safe friends 🤙

    My stepdad had one dualy, 4 door, big bed, and 5 speed stick. everytime he started it to go to work in the morning. I would be at the bus stop at the corner. I could hear the start up like yours 3 or 4 times he cranked it and finally after 4 times of starting it and lots smoke, it finally started and the smoke was twice the size on duel exhaust. Sadly he got rid of it due to the cost of a turbo rebuild

    oh wow. i just stumbled upon this and this makes me feel a lot better about my 97 with 330k on it. it starts actually much better than this yet i was still panicking that the engine was shot. I usually plug it in to alleviate hard starts. When I plug it in overnight and start it the next day, it's warm enough that I get heat 3 minutes after running it and I can practically start it, let it run while I scrape the windows, and drive away. if it's not plugged in, I have to let it high idle for upwards of 5 minutes before it stops clattering and even wants to get above 10mph.I suppose I have low compression too because you can hear how the starter turns over and how quickly it does for each cylinder, haha!
    my truck is starting to rust on the cab corners and I'm afraid I'm gonna need to get some bodywork done to it, but god I love this truck. for 3800 bucks it was a great find. 97 ECLB 5 speed 4x4, everything I wanted!

    • @diymechanictv1233
      @diymechanictv1233  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry, but that's not correct on the Powerstroke trucks. That may be how the IDI trucks worked , but on the Powerstroke trucks the glow plugs can run for up to 2 minutes even after the engine starts. Generally, unless it's really cold out you can wait for the "Wait to Start" light to go out, give it 5-10 seconds, then fire it up. Then the glow plugs continue to run (based on the engine oil temperature) until the PCM decides it wants to switch them off. I did a recent video on the system operation and testing if you want to check it out.

    • @diymechanictv1233
      @diymechanictv1233  5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Hi Ray, I haven't done a compresion test on my truck since January of 2014, but when I did , most of the cylinders were in the range of 320 psi, with a low one at 295 psi. The full range was 295-325 psi. It was disheartening to see such low numbers for the truck having so few miles, but knowing the condition that the truck was in when I got it, I don't find it hard to believe that it was heavily dusted and poorly maintained. I got it cheap, it was exactly what I wanted, and it was rust free, so I can deal with the rest. Life has gotten busy and the engine hasn't been addressed to date, but I am working on a solution now!

      Hey guys new to my 97 Ford F-350 in the winter. So if I let her glow for 2 minutes and it’s still hard to start, should I let it glow for another 2? Or continue to crank? Thanks guys. Be easy on me I’m new to the diesel scene 😂

    • @diymechanictv1233

      @@SigmaPathfinder Your best bet is to watch the volt gauge. When the glow plugs are on, it pulls the voltage way down and the needle moves over closer to the 8v on the gauge. When they shut off, it will move back towards the center. They can run for up to 2 minutes when it is cold, but if thr engine is warm, they won't stay in that long. If you're having trouble with cold starts you may need to replace the glow plug relay or the glow plugs themselves.

      That OHC is out of an Explorer. It's a pretty straight forward process to put on it, the wiring is pretty simple you just need the console, the temp sensor (and wiring) and some time. The worst part of the whole process is carefully cutting the sides of the console to fit the contour of the headliner to look right when you're finished. It's a pretty easy weekend project though, and I really like having the compass and temperature display in the truck.

      I tend to think that if it "coughs" and doesn't catch, that big snort of cold air cools off the combustion cylinders and you lose the heat from the glow plugs. When mine does that, I sometimes have to let off the key and let them plugs glow again for a while before I try it again. Really cold starts, though I tend to let it keep coughing as long as it's still trying to run.

      the engines normally last, its the rest that falls apart ,,getting hard to run older vehicles in the uk now ,,the emissions regs for older cars in london means a $20 A DAY charge ,,add in the yearly MOT tests and most people throw in the towell and buy something newer,,,local scrapyard near where i work must process 300 cars a day ,many now are only 8 or 9 years old ,certainly not worn out but too expensive to run as a daily,
      ,breaks my heart to see thousands of good quality cars getting minced up into scrap for chinese export,,millions of tons in co2 to produce them and then thousands to send it half way round the world on a ship guzzling heavy oil, thanks for the like😁👍👍👍👍

      I couldn't agree more. It seems to me the most sustainable vehicle I could operate is the one I have! Plus I don't drive many miles (my commute to work is 4 miles - which is another way to think about being sustainable) so I don't burn much fuel. I think I heard the other day that the average lifespan of a car on the roads in America today has reached a new high of 12 years old. 😁 The newest vehicle in my fleet is 15.
      I've just found that if I get a vehicle that I like, maintain it, and keep it going I can get more vehicle for my money by driving something that is older. Besides,our values right now just prioritize the expenditure on things other than vehicles. Some day that may change, but for now, I'll continue to enjoy my old cars and trucks.
