Man your tele sounds incredible! Do you know what the pickups in that custom shop fender are? Mine got the pure vintage and they're awesome but yours sounds amazing! Maybe its because of the wiring?
Great work on those live tracks! Amazing. There’s definitely chemistry? You are an amazing soloist, and would be a plus in any band, but I think Noah Guthrie and good trouble, or another iteration of the “Great Gig…” band would be VERY cool.
Just when I released a video praising telecasters and playing my custom, medium scale (25') telecaster built by luthier. Perfect timing! Dylan Your playing is incredibly inspiring. Thank You!
One of my best buddies calls me up last week, saying he just found an old guitar at a local Goodwill that he thought I’d like to see. He pulls out an old funky all brown painted Tele, and I quickly noticed it had an L series neck plate; after checking out all the hardware etc, I realized he had found an all original 1963 Fender Tele! No decal on the headstock, but all the hardware is 100% original, it even has the old-style wiring where you can’t get both pickups on at the same time! It has the correct 1963 date stamp on the neck. The only thing is that a long time ago it was painted a shit-brown color all over. It will need a refret and fingerboard leveling, and other usual repairs you’d expect for a 60s guitar, but the pickups sound great, electronics seem clean, the bridge is pretty rusty and worn out, and might need some parts (springs and screws) replaced, but otherwise I can’t believe the guy’s luck. The Goodwill charges BY THE POUND, as they sell mostly clothing and other junk, so you wouldn’t believe how cheap it was.. Talk about LUCK!
I know it's 100% subjective, but I thought the one Rhett had, the hand built first off the line deal, with the slightly hotter pickups sounded the best after the Mule.
I've played guitar for over 40 years and never owned a Tele until the pandemic hit. Ordered a super-cheap Squier Tele and instantly fell in love with it. Nothing sounds like a Tele, and it's super adaptable to all sorts of music. Swapped out the cheap pickups and it's become my most-played guitar, while my Strats and Les Pauls sit in their cases.
@@CFCMahomet Yeah that thinner body is a great Tele body. I want to keep that body going even if I mod it heavily and swap the neck, which I'm pretty sure I'll eventually do.
I sold an American Strat to buy a Martin. Now I am looking for a Tele. What model did you buy. I really like the Classic Vibe 50's. I don't want to spend a lot of money.
I just put together a blackguard-style partscaster - MJT pine body in butterscotch, Lollar 52s, Fender vintage style bridge with Gotoh in-tune brass saddles. Musikraft is making a blackguard "Tadeo taper" neck but I couldn't wait and slapped a spare on it. It isn't too far off from Rhett's Custom Shop, but wayyyyy cheaper, and just a tiny bit of relic so it's still pretty :D
Two legends 🤘🏻 Appreciate all of the content you guys have been doing. Keeps me motivated to play guitar - it felt like the guitar world was stagnant for so long
Thanks for an excellent video! While in the market for a Tele I was unsure about these NF pickups... your illustration @11:35 is what I've been looking for in a Tele, but couldn't find from Fender. My NF53 arrived yesterday and it does exactly as you demonstrated. Now I'm looking for a second one... maybe the Myles Kennedy for something similar but with a different sonic flavor. Thanks again!
I have never owned or even handled a tele, but I have been curious about them. Perfect timing on this video, because I am about to build my first tele!!!
Just got a MIJ aerodyne tele and it rocks! This makes me feel good about my choice to finally have a tele in my arsenal. But that custom shop butterscotch tele is a dream guitar👀
I started with a Squire Nashville style with mini-humbucker in the neck, strat style in the middle and normal single coil in the bridge. The neck got swapped out for a Warmoth short scale and the pickups are now all MJS custom. My go-to for sure!
Dylan, this was a superb video. The two music videos you've done together have been incredible. I literally get chills when you start your solo on whipping post. Something feels special about you two playing together. Fantastic and thanks for all these great videos.
So today I bought a G&L 30th Anniversary ASAT Classic. Not only is it my favorite telecaster, it is the best sounding/feeling guitar I have ever played. (Though this may be NGD-goggles, check back in a few months).
Wow! There were some amazing tones and playing there, and truly great guitars. A really enjoyable window into the relationship of guitars and owner/players.
Mine is a Baja Tele, MIM, stock Custom Shop Twisted Tele pickups, big old 50s neck, stock 4 way switch with S switch out of phase. Added locking tuners, GraphTech tree, black anodized aluminum pickguard and switch plate and black Hipshot bridge plate with individual saddles. It's heavy and the frets are wearing, but it's my always-out guitar.
What I would give to be in a room with the these 2 while they just hand off guitars and rip riffs. Dylan, I can't wait for the day I get to tell someone, "Yeah, I remember when he didn't have millions of followers and he was every bit as awesome then as he is now" And to Rhett, I grew up in Nashville and saw superstars almost on a daily basis so I'm not a starstruck type... but you are such a special dude to me, I think I'd lose it if I ever had the privilege of meeting you. Thank you both for sharing your craft.
Rhett you are correct when you say that the Fender Custom shop relic is ugly but it sounded awesome, i went shopping to add to my Tele collection and i played all the custom shop ones in the store from the most pristine painted to the most relic’ed and i ended up with the 1958 limited heavy relic’ed not pretty at all but man what a sound ,feel and mojo i could not believe the difference in those areas . Great comparison show .
I got my first telecaster 6 months ago. It's an Indonesian made Custom FMT. Easily the most beautiful guitar in my collection. I got her second-hand and she does need a little work but I absolutely love her tone.
All of them sounded great but when you started playing the Novo..... it instantly caught my attention. Seemed super resonant, and the perfect tone for me
My favorite Tele right now is the 72 Thinline. Not only do I like the sound of the Wide Range pickups. I do love the 7.25 radius fretboard. I have been playing my MIM 72 Thinline Reissue straight since 2018, Last year I had put in the reissue Wide Range pickups, 1 Meg pots, a CRL selector switch and a Switchcraft input jack. So essentially, it is now an American 72 reissue. The only thing is. I didn't like the Top Hat knob, so I put back the barrel knob.
Of the various Teles I’ve owned, the 83 stands out with its one year only L saddles , 10” radius with a nice chunky C profile and the bridge pickup seemed hotter than normal but the neck pickup was woody and moody- almost humbucker-ish.
I have a 2006 CS Nocaster Reissue with Ron Ellis pickups which has been my main guitar for more than a decade now, but out of that batch the one I liked the most was the Novo.
Great video, thanks. I bought my first 'T style' guitar a few weeks ago - an FGN Boundary Iliad,. a neck humbucker and bridge single coil - such a well made Japanese guitar at a very reasonable price.
T shaped objects are extremely popular right now. te1000 black blast and '87 Eclipse NT in pearl white from LTD are my 2 current units. With a few simple mods they've both ended up being keepers. Quality tone caps, treble bleed curcuit, upgraded pots, switches and jacks. Complete opposites in every way except body outline and pickup configuration. Yet both can get a very wide range of tones. I encourage people to think outside the box a bit, when it comes to brands. You don't have to buy a Fender anymore to get the T thing going on.
I played a Novo Serus for the first time at Chicago Music Exchange recently and those things singgggggg. Loved it so much. It was hard to walk out of the store without it haha.
One of the best guitars that I own is a MIJ Telecaster from the late 80's or early 90's. I have it set up for slide guitar, with the action jacked up, and 11's for strings. It's worth more than twice what I payed for it back then. Good guitar. But I also need my whammy bar and strat style guitars..big fan of Jeff Beck. Nobody but me cares about that but me! But if you find an old MIJ Telecaster..buy it! Good guitars!
After I bought my FSR Tele with the reverse control plate I stopped oggling other guitars and havent bought one in years. The Telecaster was all I needed & then some
The bridge on the CS fender is the tone but the neck p90 on the “modern” orange guitar was also incredible. So you need both in your arsenal. I’d have to be held at gunpoint to just choose one haha.
Thanks for this. I have a bit of a hard time understanding how Leo's last designs aren't included. There are many variations, but don't his final ones (heck, even the tribute models) deserve to be compared?
The telecaster is the most honest guitar out there. You can't hide your mistakes and your character always comes through. My 2nd favorite guitar only to the jazzmaster
Well, yeah, a Fender Tele is the best...but my first was actually an American made Peavey Reactor. I love that guitar. I also got a kit guitar built by a local guy doing an experiment, and that's great. It's mahogany with a flamed maple top, and weights almost 10 pounds...
Man, I'd love to see a Veritas Texas miracle up in this mix. Probably my favorite tele I've ever played. Sounds a lot like that custom shop tele to me, although that's a difficult statement to make based off of TH-cam audio
I dunno why every guitarist parrots "you can do bends without them choking out" when you got a flatter radius fretboard. Yes they're easier to play, but my American Vintage II Tele with a 7.25" radius doesn't choke at all when bending anywhere. If it's well built, it's well built
Ah, guitar specs. What's popular today was unthinkable when I was young. A big, thick, beefy neck was a deal breaker. 9.5 radius was so old school, and 7.25 was unacceptable! Single coils were what was on your dad's guitar or maybe a blues player? Bone nuts were old-fashioned, just like vintage tuners or P90s. It was super strats, humbuckers, the hotter the better, locking nuts, locking tuners, locking everything! Flat radius and paper thin necks! Of course, not everyone wanted those specs, but that's what was hot, and a traditional Fender or Gibson were almost like having the "cheese touch!" (Whimpy Kid reference)
Never really understood the whole "tele neck pickups are dull" thing. I wonder if that's mostly people misunderstanding 50s tele wiring (where the middle selector position is actually the neck pickup. Good tele neck pickups sound incredible.
I agree! I’ve been playing my traditional Tele more since we recorded this video, and I’ve really fallen back in love with the neck pickup sound. I think I just was digging the P90 in comparison during that particular moment in the video and echoing what’s commonly said about Tele neck pickups

I’m sure you’re bored of hearing this, and I’ll concede I’m not offering a new perspective, but my gosh are you talented Dylan. I hope to see loads more from you and of you in the years to come. The next Ariel Posen…? ❤
I don’t, I’ve just always been more interested in playing slide on regular guitars. Whenever I try lap steel it feels very unnatural/clumsy to me. Not knocking lap steel players at all, just not for me

They sound amazing😎 Can't wait to try a pair on my next "normal" Tele project. Great video with great playing. Subscribe! ✌✌
Anyways, just so you know, a Postmodern Custom Shop in firemist silver, single on the bridge, double Seth Lover on the neck... 9.5 - 12" radius, countoured neck heel, compensated saddles for better intonation, and absolute look. For some reason, the playability on this thing is THROUGH THE ROOF! I highly recommend the Postmodern line if you're looking at the CS. Strats as well.
Man this was a good time, we should do it again soon!
How cool would it be to see Dylan and Tyler Bryant geek out together over Mules?
Agreed, let’s definitely do it again soon!!
The chemistry between you guys is perfect. This back and forth was so good and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm up for anything you guys do together.
Man your tele sounds incredible! Do you know what the pickups in that custom shop fender are? Mine got the pure vintage and they're awesome but yours sounds amazing! Maybe its because of the wiring?
Rhett- not to change the subject but that stuff you were playing from 17:10 to 17:35 was really sweet! (not that the rest wasn't great!)
It's a tele comparison, it should have a G&L ASAT in the mix (what Leo himself intended the tele to evolve). Great video nonetheless
My one and only electric guitar is a G&L ASAT classic, it’s such an incredible instrument
Was going to say the same thing, missed opportunity for sure.
Got my one and only tele a year ago and I’m a believer now! Absolutely love my tele.
Man! That is such a genuine conversation between artists that know their stuff! Love this! 👏👏👏
My favorite "tele" is a nash guitars T-52 light aging..... absolutely amazing guitar
Been ogling those for a bit now
You should start a band with Rhett Shull!
Such a good idea!

Same, but also a Player Series MIM Tele. Just changed the pickups out for La Breas and it's so versatile and really came alive!
Same story here… I like the Squier because the body weight is way more manageable.

Nice little Jimi(Third Stone) @16:54
you should def go on tour with Good Trouble next time they hit the road :)
Any opinion on the G&L ASAT with the MFD pickups?
Yep, the mulecaster for dylan. Unique and really good.
you should do a band togheter, you have so much musical chemistry
Yeah man! Nice guitars🤙
Nice!! Another patreon to add 👍
Custom shop hands down!!!
Man, I'd love to see a Veritas Texas miracle up in this mix. Probably my favorite tele I've ever played. Sounds a lot like that custom shop tele to me, although that's a difficult statement to make based off of TH-cam audio
That first FCS tele sounded so good
Fender Knotty pine with cunife hum in the neck is a great guitar
I have a really inexpensive SX Furrian, which is a Tele copy. I love it to death. I guess it's not a "real" Tele, but it gets the job done for me.
Novo’s always impress! Someday? The Mulecaster IS a magical instrument.
I dunno why every guitarist parrots "you can do bends without them choking out" when you got a flatter radius fretboard. Yes they're easier to play, but my American Vintage II Tele with a 7.25" radius doesn't choke at all when bending anywhere. If it's well built, it's well built
My favorite tele style guitar is the Ibanez Flatv1 Josh Smith signature. It's a guitar that leaves u wanting nothing more
Rhett Shill is the man! Want it
Hard to beat the good ole government issued tele
That Mule sounded the best to me no matter who was playing it. Does this finally put the "tone wood" debate to rest? LOL, kidding...great video guys
The PRS NF is ripe for an SE version.
The unscripted guitar chat hang vibe is definitely enjoyable from this viewer's perspective. Keep inviting players over to the heezey.
19:31 😂AND THIS IS WHEN I GET EXCITED ❤
And the mulecaster has the Cupcake knobs, like the early 60's Fender Brownface amps.
that was epic! subd
I literally just got a pair of 4038’s from overseas… api or neve preamp for drum overheads?
Love this. Found Dylan through Rhett’s channel. Glad you two are hanging out.
What was the fingerboard radius on all those guitars? (I do know the PRS is 10") ...and did you have a preference?
Never really understood the whole "tele neck pickups are dull" thing. I wonder if that's mostly people misunderstanding 50s tele wiring (where the middle selector position is actually the neck pickup. Good tele neck pickups sound incredible.
I agree! I’ve been playing my traditional Tele more since we recorded this video, and I’ve really fallen back in love with the neck pickup sound. I think I just was digging the P90 in comparison during that particular moment in the video and echoing what’s commonly said about Tele neck pickups
If I ask nicely, can you make the font bigger?
If they release the PRS tele SE thats an easy buy for me
What strings gauges do you guys prefer on your Teles? Sorry if I missed it.
I use 11s on all my standard-tuned guitars including Teles, pretty sure Rhett uses 10s!
the Driftwood is my least fav looks wise of the bunch but was my fav tonally. Same reason I love the Fender Richie Kotzen tele. Looks like a tele but sounds ALOT bigger than a tele
Wow, I didn’t know the Novo was so light! 6.3 lbs 😮😮
Once the overdrive is in
They all sound the same
You guys should go on Ricks show together
Mary Kay Finish?
I’m sure you’re bored of hearing this, and I’ll concede I’m not offering a new perspective, but my gosh are you talented Dylan. I hope to see loads more from you and of you in the years to come. The next Ariel Posen…? ❤
Do you play also lapsteel? If not, is there any reason behind that?
I don’t, I’ve just always been more interested in playing slide on regular guitars. Whenever I try lap steel it feels very unnatural/clumsy to me. Not knocking lap steel players at all, just not for me
@@dylanadamsguitar thanks!
Novo & Mule for the win for me and quite easy to be honest
You try some titanium saddles on a tele…… Game changer idea from Dan on TPS
To me a "pure" slide guitar is one with a warped neck
that isn't possible to intonate properly.
Otherwise it's just a guitar.
I just finished building a baritone Tele
with TV Jones Starwood pups.
They sound amazing😎
Can't wait to try a pair on my next "normal" Tele project.
Great video with great playing.
Subscribe!
✌✌
hell. yes.
That Novos got the mojo
Whenever one needs to try justify to the wife / husbands why they have so many guitars, this video will come in handy. Ha.
Weird... Why censor a commentary on the Fender Custom Shop???
Let alone a positive one?
In short, if you're looking through the Fender CS catalog, check out the Postmodern line because it's absolute fire 🔥
Journeyman relic. Awesome
Once i tuned my Tele to e flat it became a jangly monster
The white washed furniture Dylan mentioned is “Shabby Chic” Lol 😂. The PRS sounds great and looks good except for that pick guard shape.
