Maybe the Tesla knew there was a door on the side of the building and could also tell that the family inside had just finished their soup and would be going out soon. Make sure the parallel parking with family soup detection is switched off.

@@EVOpinion Really? I've paused at 4:33 and 8:45. A bit tricky because the angles are different but it seems to me that at the rear it's roughly the same distance yet at the front the Leaf seems much closer to the car in front. So you have to alter the test so the Tesla and the Merc have a chance to beat the Leaf. And it worked. The Merc. wins the test, that the Leaf was not allowed to do.

I am a Canadian driving instructor. I start this lesson on a dual lane one-way street by asking which side the student thinks would be the most difficult to learn? They invariably choose the right side, if I were in the UK. So we learn what they think is the easiest first which in fact is the most difficult. When they have mastered the most difficult, incidentally being the way the Merc did it, I then proudly announce the truth about what they've just mastered! I use reference points inside the car that corresponds to the outside surfaces so they end up with a firm understanding of where their wheels are and where the front and back bumper is in relation to objects we wish to avoid hitting.
This is a long-winded way of saying that all we need is good instructors!

I think you may have missed the point of this feature: you're obviously good at parallel parking. Many of us are absolutely bad at it. If you can do it in 30 seconds and the auto park takes a minute and thirty seconds, it may not be much use to you. But if it would take me 4 minutes and I've bumped the car in front and the one in back, and I'm sticking out into the road when I'm done and got one tyre up on the curb -- auto park doing a much better job in a minute and 30 would be simply wonderful, thank you.

Interesting to see how the cars faired, I was surprised the Tesla completely failed but the Merc did quite well. Anyone who struggles to park would probably find the Merc did it quicker than they could and with less stress. • @seamusg8911

Uneven playing field. I would say that the Leaf won since it could distinguish a grass verge and seemed to have a less room proportionately to maneuver in. I don't think I would pay out for this feature but it might be useful to know that your car will fit in a gap.
    Otherwise a good video.

I have used both the Mercedes and Tesla parking assistants. The Mercedes will actually park faster than in this video depending on how brave you are, just give it some throttle, it’s very good. The Tesla you need to drive a lot further past the space than you think to pick it up and it is quite slow to park with no way to speed it up, but it is better now than it was a few updates ago, so it will get better. The Mercedes and the Tesla don’t look for lines on the ground but instead use the ultrasonics to measure the space between the cars, if the space is too big or you drive along too close to the parked cars they don’t always see the space. The Mercedes is a definite 👍, and works so well I would use it every time, the Tesla system on the other hand I am less inclined to use because it still needs fine tuning to improve the speed and reduce the need to drive so far past the space.

Are you sure the model X had auto park enabled in the settings? It also requires the FSD option. I've seen it do much worse spots than this myself.

Thank you for an interesting video.
I would be really interested in seing a comparison of the ”manual parking assists” that EV:s have. With manual assists I mean the cameras and radar displays and whatnots. I’m actually surprised that none of the EV review channels I subscribe have this as a regular feature when testing EV:s.
I drive an ICE Nissan Note. It has Nissans 360° camera system (I’m guessing the Leaf has the same or a newer version of the same), so when parallel parking I have a camera view both forward and back. This has made me extremely more comfortable doing parallel parking, and thanks to the cameras I have been able to park in tight spots where I never would have considered parking before. So, when it’s time for me to upgrade to an EV i really hope to get the same kind of manual parking assistance.

I think the thing is this technology is not for you. It for the people you see that have ‘parallel parked’ but their car is 2 foot from the kerb and sticking out into draft or jutting out at angle and just left like that for whatever reasons.
For fair comparison did you time yourself getting into the space the last two cars tried? Would have been a fairer comparison.

  • @DarcersTech

The reason why Tesla didn’t see the space is it probably because it wasn’t deep enough. Most of these systems try to align the “outer” edge of the car with the parked cars and the Model X is a very wide car so it would stick out too much (or hit the house).
I have the system in my i3. It’s actually very fast and also does everything on its own. It does curb the wheels quite often though.

Ryan - if you lived in a town where your only option (or perhaps a frequent one) is to parallel park, you learn the method and get it done, as you have demonstrated with the Leaf. But these days, there’s so many “parking lot” or “car park” opportunities to where you don’t need that tool or skill, that most people wouldn’t pay for it unless it’s already on a car they are interested in buying. Hmm, this is a way for car dealers to make some extra cash, by spec’ing this feature on the cars they order to sell on their lots. I must admit that me and the wife bought a car - as is - with this feature, since the rest of the package was exactly as we wanted in the car, but we’ve probably used the feature - other than playing around - two times in 5.5 years. I also have a car with 360 camera, and I haven’t tried it yet, but I bet the cameras will help much better, and are much more useful otherwise. I have a learning driver in my household. Time to play around with parking today?

  • @TassieEV

I know if your parallel parking was when I did my examination many years ago that would be a fail on parallel parking from the driving examiner. It is a single movement no shuffling back and forth is permitted in a parallel park. I don't mind parallel parking and same goes with backing a trailer, though I did learn a trick in the military about backing a trailer and you steer from the bottom of the steering wheel rather than the top and then steering is just as though you were going forward. Interesting vid, reminds me to Top Gear episode many years ago now I think and James mentioned have a more French attitude to parking even if it is on a mini-roundabout. ;) Not that I've seen parking in France just going on what the boys said.

Have 2015 Chrysler 200 C parks great when it finds spots between 2 cars. Doesn’t work with lines. I think it’s more a automatic guided parking assist you have to put it in drive when it has to go forward and reverse. It does the turning of wheel automatically which is still nice! It takes less time than that Nissan.

Our Chevy Volt does parallel and perpendicular parking. I have never timed it. Good idea! I would think the elapsed time might be based on the size of the gap? Sometimes it screws up. Sometimes it doesn't see the gap. When there are two gaps it goes for the one closest. One day it will drive forward into the gap if there is room like a human would? Keep children away from those spinning spokes of the steering wheel.

Those spaces were huge, compared to the car size, if it can't do that then zero hope for real spaces on a standard residential street. I had a 2007 prius with self parking that I never used. Always quicker to park it than to set up the system, I had one demo going into a bay that failed due to not being on perfectly level ground. It's like parking sensors that become a continuous tone at 50cm to say stop, which is when they should only start to make a noise. Just a gimmick to charge a higher price until they can actually be used.

I hardly use mine on the BMW i3, there is a 'park assist' option [not the i3s] that comes if you want the reversing camera which is a moderately good system. It definitely lines up on the cars in front and behind so best avoided if they are very close to the curb. I find hard to get it to sense a space and start the self-parking off. As I most often park at the end of a parking bay in bit of urban street with lots going on, it isn't appropriate or safe to let it try.

Can you flip the parking to other side?
First driving in other country England vs Finland so it is Left or Right side you can't park in other countries?
Second how about parking hall you see spot on the "other side" (so right side on video) can you only park on one side? To me it is on my right to you it is one your left?
Third example is that if there is one way road you can park on both sides 🙃 but only on one side using self paking?
Or can you come how chance it? yet to find it and yet to read manual but I'm 75% sure I can't :< sad

Maybe it’s just me but I actively like being in control of a machine. That includes being able to parallel park in small spaces. If there’s a choice between a big space and a small space, I’ll often as not choose the smaller one, so people with a larger vehicle can still park. But I regularly see drivers who fail to park in spaces, that are big enough to park a bus. Maybe for those people, having a car that can park itself could be handy. But if they can’t get in without assistance, what happens when they need to pull-out?
As to the cars tested. Excellent examples of tech, that reads better on paper, than any of them can accomplish in real life.

I bought auto-park with my Leaf in 2018. Back then, it was only about £430 extra (and looked really cool), so it wasn't exactly an extravagance. It's a great party-piece, but I just don't use it. You're right about it being slower than just doing it yourself and it's fiddly to start. It's also not that great at finding a space, though your vid shows it's better than the competition.
Nissan have bumped the price of the option to £1090, on top of the car's base price being about £3700 higher than when I signed in Feb 2018. (Disclosure: government incentive grant was £1000 more back then.)

It would steer the car until it was happy that the next go would get it into the space.

I liked a lot of your vids that I've watched recently but this is NOT one of your better efforts, thumbs down from me. It felt like you didn't know what you were doing, which is a bit unfair for the 3 cars on test as you appeared not to know how they worked even.
    Im surprised "Just Ev's " didn't issue a disclaimer 😁
