Crookham Manor

Since it was built in 1850, it has served several purposes such as a manor house, a junior school and a school for children of people serving at Greenham Common. It was abandoned for some time after the US Air Force left the area, before being purchased in 1961 and used as a boarding school until its closure in 1989.

I went to school at Crookham Commons between 1953 and 1959 when my father was stationed at Greenham Common AFB. It was absolutely beautiful back then, both inside and outside. The grounds were like a park. Every classroom had huge, ornate mirrors. But it was also quite spooky. There was a small graveyard on the grounds where family pets belonging to former owners had been buried. On one occasion I was alone in the building (except for the janitor) and I heard whispering in my classroom on the second floor. Very creepy!!! The reason I was alone in the building is a long story, but I ran out of the building in a panic, right past the janitor who was cleaning the kitchen. I startled him, but I ran like the devil was after me, and I didn't stop until I reached Home Farm Headley (near Kingsclere) where I lived with my mom, dad, and 4 siblings.
