Hi I started to learn the Ukulele when my brother, quite unexpectedly bought me one for Christmas. I have been trying my best to learn a few chords, transitions and strum patterns in order to at least seem grateful, but I must admit a couple of weeks into 2021 and my enthusiasm was beginning to wane. Then I stumbled across one of your videos. I was actually watching some "Austin Ukulele Society" vids at the time and thinking it looked like a great night out (that's what quarantine does to you! ). Anyway, since you uttered the words "I didn't really think I could do a Queen Elizabeth I cover on my ukulele" I've been hooked. Since that night I have not been to bed before 2am as your energy keeps me buzzing and wanting to practice more and more. I don't know if I'm improving at all as I have to play every strum completely muted because everyone else is in bed. Mastering this technique has been quite an achievement in itself. Anyway, thank you very much for what you're doing, keep doing it and keep safe. xxx Love from Phil Bassett [Bexleyheath (near London) England]
Phil!!! You have no idea how much your thoughtful comment has made my day!! Thank you so much! I'm so happy that you found my videos and music inspiring and have used them to push past that learning plateau into finding your passion for uke! Keep strummin' and thank you again for your very kind words! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Have a great week, Phil!
To play the “D” chord, you can simply do it with ONE finger, barring the top three strings using the middle finger, it’s also makes it easier to change keys
First time on your channel, first video... But girl, let me say that aside from your ukulele skills, your voice is amazing! Even though we only got a glimpse here, it sounds so powerful, controlled and entertaining. I love it 🎉
You are so talented! This makes me want to get back into ukulele and practice more after not using it cause I was afraid of failure but these sea shanties have given me hope! I will soon set a course to try again!
Ok I definitely love with these songs, as an Irishman!!! And when you put that hat on i fell off me chair lolol. You are GREAT!!!! Thank you for being you!!!! Keep up the great work. I look forward to going through your page and learning as much as i can!🎉☘️. Greg⭐☘️🤙⚡🤘

Just found you I am a new player, I was looking to learn some sea shanties and wow a brilliant introduction to them , good fun session and will be learning them and following you,
I love these shanties. They are somewhat like American ballads, a hundred verses, repetition upon repetition, but somehow still touching your heart. I'm actually a guitar player, but I bought a ukulele in order to teach my grandchild some music before she's old enough to handle a guitar. Now I'm stuck on the ukulele. It's such fun to play. ;-)
Only just found your channel! Fab video! Another two to teach to my group :D Aaaargh! that be a pretty good pirate accent! Btw it's International Talk Like A Pirate Day on Sunday 19th September! Well shiver me timbers! Lol! x
Hi there! I just learned to play the ukelele and I love it! The pirate shanties are awesome! However, it was sometimes a bit difficult to follow you with the strums.. because it wasn't all too clear. 😅 But I just kept watching it over and over, and now I get the hand out of it. 😁 Keep up the good work!! 💪🏻😁
So, I bought your songs from Patreon but I need you singing the songs all the way through. I tried to download these songs so that I could practice with them and learn the words but none of the songs have the exact same words that you use. Is there a place where you have the whole song available? I love your voice and your personality! I do not sing well but I do better when I have someone to sing with.
Hi Destiny. I just came across this video whilst looking for Ukulele pirate songs. Now I am 65 years old and have only been playing the Ukulele for around 6 years. I have never played an instrument before (a part from a triangle in Infant school….the only instrument I was trusted with!) and I do not read music. As most Ukulele playing is chord based not reading music isn’t obviously a problem. Now, having just watched this video to the end I would love to be able to play some of the chord sequences you demonstrated but try as I might I can not finger strum, I have to plat with a Plectrum. Also, my fingers are nowhere near as nimble and flexible as yours and are shorter so I struggle to form some chords and I struggle to change between some chords fast enough so when I am playing with my club members I sometimes have to skip a chord. So having g told you all that, my question to you is; is it possible to play all chord sequences with a Plectrum or can they only be played by finger strummers? Simple up down strumming isn’t a problem but that is currently my limit! Any advice, welcome. Best wishes, Mark (Leicestershire, UK)
I'm glad you are finding my tutorials useful! That is a great question about strum patterns and plectrums/picks - I don't use a pick with ukulele and don't play guitar enough to know a real answer, but I imagine there's a way to make it work! And you're doing a great job by finding accommodations in the chord sequences to make it work for you!
That totally makes my day, David! So happy to hear it! I'm playing a concert size ukulele in all my videos (just a better size for my longer fingers and gangly elbows lol). Enjoy your ukulele journey!
I have a question regarding the way you strum the Wellerman. Basically you have pattern DUXU UX so suggests it should go like: 1 - D, & - U, 2 - X, & - U, 3 - nothing, & - U, 4 - D, & - nothing. So I would think that you are going to swtich chords on etiher 1 or 3... but instead you seem to switch just after first chuck instead so one chord goes DUX and you swtich a do U UX... It's a bit confusing to me. Is it swinged offbeat? Or is it 1,2,3,4,5,6 instead? Like: 1 - D, & - U, 2 - X, & - null, 3 - null, & - null, 4 - null, & - U, 5 - null, & - U, 6 - X, & - null? Can you please clarify?
the hat worked well with the shanties but the glasses made me feel like I was back on land. That British seafaring stuff made its way to Australia, Botany Bay is an excellent example. Might be elements of it still in old rustic outback music, knew some people that did folk music years back but the generation that was familiar with is largely gone.
I didn't really enjoy that but it's great for beginners. Sometimes I think videos give more information than I need. Cool video though.. respect for helping new people.. and it sounds great. Sorry I didn't start with that. I play like every day and never sound that good
