Never. Is the answer. RomComs are are pure sh*t/boring just like this movie I don't care how you dress it up. Crap acting, crap story....I'd rather chew my toenails. Baby Reindeer (series) I'd stop chewing my nails for that.
I always wonder why, whenever a character is in law or medical school, they nearly always end up dropping out? I wouldn't have been surprised if Bea had admitted that her true dream was to become a pastry chef.
Probably because law and medical school aren't romantic? It also creates a conflict within the story between financial success and personal happiness. Also it's kind of the "romantic dreamer" trope to be thrust onto the path your family wants for you when you would rather dance or paint or something. And in some cases that makes sense. But I'm from an entire generation where we were all told to get a degree and avoid trades and manal labor jobs like the plague, to follow our dreams and be spontaneous... so there's a severe shortage of electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, etc. It's said a lot; very few can survive and make money on an arts degree. Not many can get by in theater. Only a few can do graphic design or be authors or screen writers or poets. Most don't have the connections, the luck, or the talent just isn't there. But the dream to leave the successful money job and go follow your passion still lingers.
There are multiple reasons, considering we are in the WOKE era of movies, making her into a pastry chef wouldn't have landed so well with the girl power.
I hate the trope where one big romantic gesture makes up for constant day to day horrible behaviors. Like dude. I dont care if you jumped out of a helicopter with a bouquet of flowers blaring my favorite romantic song. Thats one day. One moment. That doesn't matter if he doesn't respect me enough to do things around the house because we both live here. That doesn't matter if he doesn't listen when I talk, and expects me to listen to and engage in his interests without trying to care about mine. It doesn't matter if he makes me feel like he'd rather I didn't exist unless I was doing something for him, and don't have value outside of services I can provide. Be grand and romantic all you want, it doesnt mean anything if you expect us to take care of you like your mother.
so that's where i think this movie actually did the trope in a good way. the entirety of their relationship was not knowing if the other was into them and so they spent the whole time being guarded. she snuck out rather than admit she had a great time and liked him, he's hurt by her leaving so he pretends not to care, which she over hears and winds up getting mad at him. then they sleep together and he think's she's gonna regret it, so he flips roles and leaves like she did, she thinks it means he doesn't really like her, etc. in this case i think the one big gesture works, because that big gesture is just affirming he is falling for her and he's going for it. as LME said during the video even when they are mad at each other as they first arrive he's still a gentleman and lets her go first. the whole reason they are mad at each other is because they both hurt each other and never had that one conversation that would have fixed it all. otherwise hell yes, big romantic gestures are largely stupid things to make us go "awwww" when we should be going "dude WTF that worked?". in the theater when he showed up and gave his speech my reaction wasn't "awww" it was "finally they admit they want each other, thank fuck!"
Although I think Sydney's acting was strong in Euphoria, she's still Hallmark-level when it comes to light-hearted romance. It reminds me of an interview by an A-list actress (Sandra Bullock?? Julia Roberts??) saying that romantic comedies are severely underrated by award shows/critics, which is part of why top actors tend to move away from romcoms if they want to have a "serious" career. However, that actress mentioned that of all the genres she'd done, romcoms are still the most challenging. It's incredibly difficult to portray comedy in an subtle hilarious way - and not try too hard. This is something I think about often with the latest releases. "Anyone But You" was cute in theory, but the writing & the actors were definitely trying a little too hard. But given the scarcity of my favorite genre, I won't complain too loudly. 😅
Comedy is something that comes naturally and Sweeny is not gifted in that department. Maybe she is funny but her delivery feels off and kinda forced. That said it's comparatively easier to make people cry than to make them genuinely laugh. In that way Romcoms deserve so much more credit than they get currently.
That was an old fashioned romcom. There have hardly been any in theatres so it obviously hit just right for an underserved theatrical audience. People looking good and locations looking are also things folks just like. On top of that if the leads are charismatic, it's a win.
Sydney Harbour is full of sharks. Including great whites. Its pretty rare that anyone gets bit, but if I were on a yaht and someone fell in, aint no way Im jumping in after them or swimming to the opera house.
My theater played the "Hi we're the actors, thanks for coming to see our movie - stick around till the end to see the behind the scenes!" Then immediately played the behind the scenes reel with everyone singing Unwritten Then played the movie. Was an odd experience seeing the movie basically spoiled right before watching it. Either way I didn't enjoy it much, painfully aware I was watching a movie the entire time
I kinda enjoyed the film. Pretty people and sceneries, some funnies, I'll welcome a simple romcom. I do think Sydney was a bit stiff at times but she's been great in past projects like Euphoria and Immaculate imo. Fun video tho ^^
Honestly, this would've been a good romcom movie in 2006 or something. The romance felt a bit forced and some of the acting was a bit awkward at times (idk if it's the director's fault). There's something missing when I watched it but overall, I still thought that it's not that bad. 6.5/10 at best imho
I, personally, absolutely love rom-coms, but I couldn't make it through the first 15 minutes of this movie... The acting is some of the worst I have seen in a movie, I genuinely have no idea how anyone has made it through the movie, much less managed to claim it's actually good.
Not gonna lie, didn't finish this one. The humor seemed really outdated. Romcoms came a long way in the last decade and this one is like a throwback from the 00s
It's 7 am and I thought there was a horror movie in which everybody but the protagonist is Goofy the animated character from that meme where he's on trial for mass murder
It was a cute movie but silly on everything else. I wish the romance was more deeper to make it crazy as she run away or be close then play hard until the game.
I liked this movie. It may be due to the lack of romcoms or their quality over the last ten years. It was so dumb it was funny. They could cut that cliff scene.
hey i'm a guy and i liked this movie, you leave it alone lol. also that is a really cute detail that he was mirroring the dad's story, i never noticed that! and no i didn't like it because of sydney, she's not my type. now jenna coleman on the other hand....
I was really excited to see this movie, but I thought it had one of the worst scripts I've ever seen. And some of the plot contrivances were downright painful. As IF that helicopter would just take him where he wanted to go. It's an emergency vehicle not a freaking TAXI. Imagine faking a heart attack to get an ambulance to help you make a romantic gesture. So stupid.
Hate when they burn sage to clear a room when it be a closed practice bro we couldn’t burn sage couldn’t dance couldn’t speak our language just a slap in the face everytime I see this stuff in movies
So I've never watched any of SS's work before so I can honestly say she's not giving off leading lady vibes just off this movie alone. However I did enjoy this as I like cheesy rom cons. She's no Katherine Heigl though
I thought this was the idea of you and I was so offended because that one was also stupid but in the way that rom coms must be stupid. But this one was just stupid stupid lol

@SMacCuUladh to be fair it makes for a boring movie. 😅

Well, after this review, I 'm actually gonna watch it now
If you pay attention, Glen Powell went through about 7 hair styles through the film
When Harry Met Sally or Moonstruck

My two favorites
Glen Powell is a spectacular romcom actor
Sydney Sweeney is… idek at this point

Hate rom-coms in general but I love Sleepless in Seattle
After hearing the review its good to know i didnt miss out on anything good with this movie.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates did it better in my opinion.
I liked it. It was funny and romantic although I feel it was drawn out because they could've had a talk way before the trouble begin lol
Bruh mans literally going to jail or fined for wasting public resources to basically get a cab 🤦🏾♂️💀🤣

Same. It’s honestly so confusing. I tried to watch the whole thing twice and just couldn’t.

Intolerable Cruelty, While You Were Sleeping, Some Like It Hot, The Truth About Cats & Dogs, Roxanne, Wedding Crashers are all good movies.
