Good video!! I've had the Hero Black7 for a couple of years now, and I just bought the Hero9. I think it definitely is worth the upgrade for 3 reasons: 1) Horizon lock -- the amount of time I've spent in post straightening footage is riduculous!!! And I'm SURE I'm holding the camera straight!! 2) 2.7k at 120 FPS with hypersmooth. Buttery smooth slo mo you can zoom in on. 3) The media mod mic add on. You almost had to contort yourself to get a decent mic on the GoPro - customized cage, extra cables, stupid size mic that turned a low-profile camera into something that has everone staring at you, then asking what you're doing. No thank you. As a bonus, the media mod has a couple of cold shoe mounts that I can put a light on. Have you ever tried to hold the GoPro & your cell phone with its flashlight in one hand to get a shot of yourself at night? You have to hold them in one hand, because its tooo awkward to have both arms extended when you're trying to vlog at night. So these may seem like small things, but to me they were huge issues & the GoPro9 was totally worth the price to fix them!

I really like these long term reviews, you know so much more about a product after using it for awhile and putting it through paces. It seems like a nice upgrade and still best all around action camera, especially if your first priority is using it as rugged action camera. Great review!
Thanks Ron! I also enjoy them a lot and it's nice to be focused on tech not only at the time it gets released. I wish I could get the devices a little earlier, but being based in Europe most things arrive a bit slower🧐

Hi Alvin! The GoPro gets warm, however doesnt overheat. It is normal to have devices warm up these days - processors are pretty powerful. No issues as webcam. Works like charm.
Hero 9 Black - At 8:44 - I and some others are having issues using Hindsight. I've made two videos showing some issues such as: at times some sound is missing, video switched to Slo-Mo, parts are jittery, and sections freeze. A couple of times the camera shut down and would not turn back on, had to remove, reinstall the batter to get my 9 working. Very much agree with you. Sadly, almost every video about GoPro that appears together with its release is more or less as you describe... Edit: if your comment is in regard to the "paid promotion" note at the beginning - I keep it because the video is sponsored by FLynova and I thought it is fair to disclose it. I will see if it is really necessary since I clearly state that during the video anyways.
Excellent video mate, Unfortunately, the camera replacement part of the subscription plan costs $99.00. Even after the second update there are noises in the dark areas ( not talking about filming in the dark, but the dark areas of the footage filmed in a very bright sunny day ) Cheers
I use the GoPro primarily as a dash cam when riding, and find it good for that purpose. Definitely better than my Insta 360 One X with its 1990s looking footage :)

Heey, mate! So good to hear from you, and I hope you are safe and sound with your wonderful family. Don't worry 'bout that lens - it isn't that fragile. The Hero 7 is also great. In terms of image quality - the 7 and the 9 are anyways pretty close. As you notice - same processor inside.
Get a Hero 7 and look at the Reelsteady Go software. It's amazing but check out the modes with the software before you purchase. If your happy with 4k 30 or 4k 25 (you can stretch this a little in post for 24) then I say go for it.
Purchase my Hero9 at the end of September 2020--great camera and all works fine except the USB-C port is malfunctioning. It does not recognize the Media Mod and it intermittently connects to my PC. Charging is hardly ever a problem though. To day I looked at it under my microscope and found that one of the pins on the USB-C connector has burnt halfway through the plastic of the connector. B&H won't take it back so I hope that GoPro replaces it for me.
I bought Hero 9 couple of weeks ago. Not regretting. I agree with everything in this video. UI is sluggish but you won’t spend much time on that. Video quality and stabilization are next-level.
Eh i went with the DJ1 Osmos, loads more value for money, Gopro needs to stop coming out with so many models in such a short time, the quality of their cameras simply suck.
I had the Hero 9 for 3 weeks before sending it back. Footage was awful most of the time... support said it was bad firmware so I updated the firmware which ended up practically bricking the camera. My first (and last) GoPro.

Nope, I don't have any of these. The only remark I have is some light microphone glitch. Always used Sandisk card and it works fine. Menus are very slow though.
I am currently waiting for mine to arrive and I definitely am looking forward to it. My last GoPro was the Hero 4 Silver and i was pretty happy with it. I guess it was time for Upgrade though an that it will be worth it 😁

Gopro 9, zoom function. I have zoom displayed in lower right corner of my cam, set up in preferences. Regardless of the setting, standard, activity, etc, the zoom function is greyed out/ turned off. How do I use, the zoom function for video? Does it only work is some video settings, not all, which video settings allow me to zoom in and out? Very frustrating
GoPro is way better than the dji you recommended people get. What you used this GoPro for was the bare minimum and so was your settings... Tons of videos available on YT that can help you tinker with your settings and get the settings to what it needs to be. The GoPro isn't a show off social media camera.. just to say you have one. It can do a lot more than what you were using it for.
You can say similar things about Osmo Action and they would be correct too. I am still a big fan of GoPro - just think that they can do a lot better than adding software features, which they can add without releasing a new generation...
This is a software-zoom that I've applied in post-production so that we can see more details about the image quality. So sorry about the confusion caused. There's no 5x zoom option inside the GoPro.
Hey Rachel; True that - quite a nice setup. Not exactly a rig - it is a cube with camera mount options plus light (called Mirfak Moin) and a microphone - also by Mirfak. I think they used to sell something like a smartphone vlogging kit containing most of them.
I bought 9 and for me the camera is good, the thing that is not good is go pro apps don't work for me when I have the cable attached to camera and open app it tells me nothing on sd card, wrong there is plenty. I have to take out card put in reader then into pc, then presto it will show content ....But the video footage is black on the app , have to forget app and use other ways to view. So for me a new user it's an incomplete system an app for go pro that won't work with the go pro camera, at least for me, so the subscription i cloud thing is not useable. Also there is little on you tube about how you use this camera and edit footage without spending a fortune on premier pro, mine in 4k is like animation, so yea not without its issues .
Seriously buggy .. GPS doesn't work, sound glitches (clicks), gopro remote doesn't work (they're bringing out a new one), problems connecting to app, problems with media mod, laggy front screen, green and blue spots in low light video... the list is almost endless yet none of these things are mentioned in this review and I'm sure they must have been noticed since so many people are complaining about them on the gopro support forums. The latest firmware fixes the touch screen problems but nothing else and the next firmware release , promised for November, has been put back until at least December. Looks very much like they released this camera before it was ready to keep shareholders happy.
Every new device, especially these days, has some firmware glitches. No matter smartphones, smartwatches, drones or whatsoever. In the video there's actually a lot information about the low light performance and you can watch and see that it's worse than both Hero 8 and Osmo Action; And there's a lot to say about the horrendous performance in certain situations... But for the average user - this is a great choice and in my opinion - the best action cam of the year.
@Phil C I'm with you on the issues on the Gopro 9. I just purchased it and now selling it as the biggest issue for me is the audio, it crackles & pops, like when your doing a video with a quiet background you hear the sound kinda like spit in the background like static pop sounds, and I see several complaints on this issue in the gopro support Hub. I Have the gopro 7 and no such issue in that regard so sticking with that for now..

Hey Just found and love Ur channel... I film my channel on my mobile phone and looking to upgrade to a GoPro 9 should I? I have heard it freezes and you lose footage on the trail that could be scary thanks heaps
GoPro's freezing has been always a very wide topic. Generally - I'm a fan of Hero series and usually prefer them over the rest - mostly because of the flat color profile. SHooting with action camera is different: you have no autofocus/shallow depth of field option, but it's much more portable and can give you the freedom for shooting form a lot nicer angles. Just forget about good low light performance. The rest is really cool!
The flagship phones do not have this easy to carry form factor. But no - the image is not better than a flagship. If you want a dedicated camera for traveling - think about the Sony ZV1.
Just buy the GoPro hero eight even in 2021 the hero eight is still a better camera you can’t even control the hero nine with the app anymore and view it live it actually turns off I’m not sure why they downgraded such a great feature don’t waste your money on the hero nine-
It was all auto... With a very tiny bit of color correction because it was even yellow-er befire that. This forest is extremely challenging for all cameras; The GoPro did well, despite the minor imperfections.
Man.. It's an action camera.. Who the heck uses it at 5x as a telephoto lens? Action means day, fast pace actions. Not filming aliens inside the room 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️

Another very bad thing: Live Preview on the Gopro app is not supported(on Gopro 9) while recording video. That feature is available in the previous versions. Shame to Gopro, they have removed this important feature silently. So, if you are planning to use your phone to frame your shots while recording, DO NOT UPGRADE TO GP9
What the HELL is wrong with Gopro ? They don't answer the emails they don't return telephone calls . Thier check your orders status isn't working ? I have 4 gopros 3, 5 ,7, 8 this isn't making my decision to acquire another gopro ? Maybe it's time too switch!
The replacements are “FREE”, there is a $99 claim processing “fee”! So as I always say “Fee ain’t Free”! And According to the terms of agreement they limit you to two claims per year and they won’t send you a replacement until they receive your old camera back first.... Not a big deal, just saying....
I thought the whole bundle price seemed really good until I thought about shipping and import fees. At least here in Canada. If I order from GoPro with the sub bundle it is $399.98usd + $20usd shipping + $45.50usd import for a total of $465.48usd. Converted to cad that is a total of $597.41cad. Meanwhile, on amazon.ca, right now, the camera is selling for $529.00cad with free shipping and no import. Even after sales tax it would be cheaper to buy on amazon. I think the sub bundle deal is a great deal for Americans but it doesn't really offset the cost of bringing the thing in from the States if you can buy it from a local source. PS: An annoying side note. The bundle deal has existed since the day the GPH9 launched but on Black Friday they changed the website to pretend like the deal was a black friday deal. As soon as black friday was over the site is now pretending it is a "holiday sale." Feels manipulative. ;)

Heey, nice to emeet you here. Well - the Osmo Action is clearly still a lot more stable than Hero 9. But I've never lost a file because of a freezing condition. It's just laggy.
Is there a site that lets us know what the major GoPro 9 lens focal lengths are --- equal to 35mm photography (my career was in 35mm still images so I'm still in that mind-frame).

Well I"ve owned a Go Pro since GoPro 2 came out...and I have NEVER had a hard time centering filming myself or my kids - you just can not miss if you aim the camera somewhat centered...and being in the in the frame - even when there were no screens to view at all.....The angle is so wide that you'd have to be pretty off center by a long shot to miss yourself in camera ....This camera makes it dummy proof to be able to vlog without needing to see yourself in a front view screen...
Agreed. However - there are some situations where you may not be perfectly centered. Or you may not be sure about the mode of shooting - this is when the screen can come really handy.
@@TechMishka oh certainly..o I use the phone app when I'm clogging in a closer proximity...and want to use narrow or linear...I agree...but the older versions had only one perspective ..wide..lol..so you couldn't miss...

I have read in a lot of videos that the go pro mic adaptor 3.5 mm is not compatible with the go pro hero 9. but at 12 minutes in your video I see that you have it equipped. Have you not had issues?
I have massive problems with the sound on my GoPro 9. A lot of my recordings have weird popping sounds in the audio. Havn't been able to work around it.
I'd also add, you mention that the 9 doesn't really have the innovation we are used to from GoPro. I think for this gen, the Max Lens Mod is their "big innovation" but given that it is an accessory and has been a relatively hard to get accessory so far most GPH9 users don't actually get to experience it.
Yeah, makes sense. It's a good idea, but ... there are a lot of aftermarket solutions that worked well even before. They seem to have locked us to use something that only they produce.
I bought GoPro 9. Loop video mode didnt work. Sensor sensitivity sucks. And wrong slomo image in a room before starting video record. I change GoPro cam for another one at shop. Just got a new one. Sorry for mistakes, im russian)
@@TechMishka There were problems with updating the firmware via the app, I had to manually update it. Also, the slow motion mode in poor room lighting does not show the situation quite correctly, I noticed that it depends on fps. I'm sure what all cameras have. You just need to switch fps in low light to check.
I have bought the hero 9 and the APP ask to do a firmware update. After this the back screen is blocked out. Lots of owner have suffered this. There is no contact from support. no warrenty no return. DON"T BUY this
Of course there is warranty and of course they will replace it if it is bricked. Keep pushing them. In the meanwhile - try taking the battery out and see if the camera will come back after that.

You may try purchasing the GoPro Plus - can come handy in such cases.
But even without it - it is a clear reason for replacement.

I think GoPro just follow release cycle - and push a new release every year. ALthough most updates in the past 2-3 years are rather insignificant.

Nope, I don't have any of these. The only remark I have is some light microphone glitch. Always used Sandisk card and it works fine. Menus are very slow though.
I am currently waiting for mine to arrive and I definitely am looking forward to it. My last GoPro was the Hero 4 Silver and i was pretty happy with it. I guess it was time for Upgrade though an that it will be worth it 😁

Gopro 9, zoom function. I have zoom displayed in lower right corner of my cam, set up in preferences. Regardless of the setting, standard, activity, etc, the zoom function is greyed out/ turned off. How do I use, the zoom function for video? Does it only work is some video settings, not all, which video settings allow me to zoom in and out? Very frustrating
It works in certain scenarios only. Try shooting in 1080p, and it should be activated.
1x snorkeling in warm caribbean ocean and its dead. Possibly one of the worst Gopro built this H9 Black... My Hero4 Black was more a tank than this.

GoPro is way better than the dji you recommended people get. What you used this GoPro for was the bare minimum and so was your settings... Tons of videos available on YT that can help you tinker with your settings and get the settings to what it needs to be. The GoPro isn't a show off social media camera.. just to say you have one. It can do a lot more than what you were using it for.
You can say similar things about Osmo Action and they would be correct too. I am still a big fan of GoPro - just think that they can do a lot better than adding software features, which they can add without releasing a new generation...
I noticed at one point you had it zoomed into 5x. I haven't found the zoom option. What am I missing?
This is a software-zoom that I've applied in post-production so that we can see more details about the image quality. So sorry about the confusion caused. There's no 5x zoom option inside the GoPro.

Hey Rachel; True that - quite a nice setup. Not exactly a rig - it is a cube with camera mount options plus light (called Mirfak Moin) and a microphone - also by Mirfak. I think they used to sell something like a smartphone vlogging kit containing most of them.
I bought 9 and for me the camera is good, the thing that is not good is go pro apps don't work for me when I have the cable attached to camera and open app it tells me nothing on sd card, wrong there is plenty. I have to take out card put in reader then into pc, then presto it will show content ....But the video footage is black on the app , have to forget app and use other ways to view. So for me a new user it's an incomplete system an app for go pro that won't work with the go pro camera, at least for me, so the subscription i cloud thing is not useable. Also there is little on you tube about how you use this camera and edit footage without spending a fortune on premier pro, mine in 4k is like animation, so yea not without its issues .
I also use a card reader to transfer data. Seems to be easier...
Seriously buggy .. GPS doesn't work, sound glitches (clicks), gopro remote doesn't work (they're bringing out a new one), problems connecting to app, problems with media mod, laggy front screen, green and blue spots in low light video... the list is almost endless yet none of these things are mentioned in this review and I'm sure they must have been noticed since so many people are complaining about them on the gopro support forums. The latest firmware fixes the touch screen problems but nothing else and the next firmware release , promised for November, has been put back until at least December. Looks very much like they released this camera before it was ready to keep shareholders happy.
Every new device, especially these days, has some firmware glitches. No matter smartphones, smartwatches, drones or whatsoever.
In the video there's actually a lot information about the low light performance and you can watch and see that it's worse than both Hero 8 and Osmo Action; And there's a lot to say about the horrendous performance in certain situations...
But for the average user - this is a great choice and in my opinion - the best action cam of the year.
@Phil C I'm with you on the issues on the Gopro 9. I just purchased it and now selling it as the biggest issue for me is the audio, it crackles & pops, like when your doing a video with a quiet background you hear the sound kinda like spit in the background like static pop sounds, and I see several complaints on this issue in the gopro support Hub. I Have the gopro 7 and no such issue in that regard so sticking with that for now..

I use adobe Premiere Pro. Good features. It used to crash a lot some time ago - seems to be a lot more stable now.

GoPro's freezing has been always a very wide topic. Generally - I'm a fan of Hero series and usually prefer them over the rest - mostly because of the flat color profile. SHooting with action camera is different: you have no autofocus/shallow depth of field option, but it's much more portable and can give you the freedom for shooting form a lot nicer angles. Just forget about good low light performance. The rest is really cool!

The flagship phones do not have this easy to carry form factor. But no - the image is not better than a flagship.
If you want a dedicated camera for traveling - think about the Sony ZV1.

if it is a continuous video - the battery may last close to 2 hours.

Just buy the GoPro hero eight even in 2021 the hero eight is still a better camera you can’t even control the hero nine with the app anymore and view it live it actually turns off I’m not sure why they downgraded such a great feature don’t waste your money on the hero nine-

It was all auto... With a very tiny bit of color correction because it was even yellow-er befire that. This forest is extremely challenging for all cameras; The GoPro did well, despite the minor imperfections.
As Hero 10 it is a great camera but it fails in low light conditions.
In nice weather it makes outstanding footage 🙃.

Another very bad thing: Live Preview on the Gopro app is not supported(on Gopro 9) while recording video. That feature is available in the previous versions. Shame to Gopro, they have removed this important feature silently. So, if you are planning to use your phone to frame your shots while recording, DO NOT UPGRADE TO GP9

I thought the whole bundle price seemed really good until I thought about shipping and import fees. At least here in Canada.
If I order from GoPro with the sub bundle it is $399.98usd + $20usd shipping + $45.50usd import for a total of $465.48usd.
Converted to cad that is a total of $597.41cad.
Meanwhile, on amazon.ca, right now, the camera is selling for $529.00cad with free shipping and no import. Even after sales tax it would be cheaper to buy on amazon.
I think the sub bundle deal is a great deal for Americans but it doesn't really offset the cost of bringing the thing in from the States if you can buy it from a local source.
PS: An annoying side note. The bundle deal has existed since the day the GPH9 launched but on Black Friday they changed the website to pretend like the deal was a black friday deal. As soon as black friday was over the site is now pretending it is a "holiday sale." Feels manipulative. ;)

Heey, nice to emeet you here. Well - the Osmo Action is clearly still a lot more stable than Hero 9. But I've never lost a file because of a freezing condition. It's just laggy.
Is there a site that lets us know what the major GoPro 9 lens focal lengths are --- equal to 35mm photography (my career was in 35mm still images so I'm still in that mind-frame).

Well I"ve owned a Go Pro since GoPro 2 came out...and I have NEVER had a hard time centering filming myself or my kids - you just can not miss if you aim the camera somewhat centered...and being in the in the frame - even when there were no screens to view at all.....The angle is so wide that you'd have to be pretty off center by a long shot to miss yourself in camera ....This camera makes it dummy proof to be able to vlog without needing to see yourself in a front view screen...
Agreed. However - there are some situations where you may not be perfectly centered. Or you may not be sure about the mode of shooting - this is when the screen can come really handy.

I use the phone app when I'm clogging in a closer proximity...and want to use narrow or linear...I agree...but the older versions had only one perspective ..wide..lol..so you couldn't miss...
very few people...less than 1% shoot in night or low light with these action cameras...they are meant to be used outdoors in natural light.
They don't because it's a well known fact that they perform badly. In some countries the nights can be pretty long, you know 😇

I have read in a lot of videos that the go pro mic adaptor 3.5 mm is not compatible with the go pro hero 9. but at 12 minutes in your video I see that you have it equipped. Have you not had issues?

Why is it when there is fast action shown the image is degraded and pixelated? I notice this on all videos done with a GoPro.

I have massive problems with the sound on my GoPro 9. A lot of my recordings have weird popping sounds in the audio. Havn't been able to work around it.

I've noticed a lot of comments about microphone problems. Perhaps a batch with issues. GoPro have had such troubles in the past too.

I'd also add, you mention that the 9 doesn't really have the innovation we are used to from GoPro. I think for this gen, the Max Lens Mod is their "big innovation" but given that it is an accessory and has been a relatively hard to get accessory so far most GPH9 users don't actually get to experience it.
Yeah, makes sense. It's a good idea, but ... there are a lot of aftermarket solutions that worked well even before. They seem to have locked us to use something that only they produce.
I bought GoPro 9. Loop video mode didnt work. Sensor sensitivity sucks. And wrong slomo image in a room before starting video record. I change GoPro cam for another one at shop. Just got a new one. Sorry for mistakes, im russian)

@@TechMishka There were problems with updating the firmware via the app, I had to manually update it. Also, the slow motion mode in poor room lighting does not show the situation quite correctly, I noticed that it depends on fps. I'm sure what all cameras have. You just need to switch fps in low light to check.
I have bought the hero 9 and the APP ask to do a firmware update. After this the back screen is blocked out. Lots of owner have suffered this. There is no contact from support. no warrenty no return. DON"T BUY this
Of course there is warranty and of course they will replace it if it is bricked. Keep pushing them.
In the meanwhile - try taking the battery out and see if the camera will come back after that.
