    Description
Ventilators in the Intensive Care Unit are not uncommon and are often a part of the treatment plan for many of these critical care patients. There are multiple indications for a patient to be intubated and require mechanical ventilation. The issue often at hand are those new nurses who have recently become critical care nurses and have been assigned to one of these clients with limited education and experience managing a client requiring this often-intimidating piece of machinery.
This lecture is to help educate the nurse who may be new to critical care or new to nursing in general practicing in the critical care arena. A review of the criteria for mechanical ventilation along with the general terms and settings will also be discussed. In addition, a brief discussion on nursing care. Finally, the criteria for weaning and extubating will be presented.
In closure, a discussion on the pathophysiological effects and criteria of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) will also be presented, simply due to the high number of patients who now fall under this diagnosis.
    Module Learning Outcomes
These modules prepare the learner to:
    1. Define the two major types of respiratory failure.
    2. State two indications for intubation and mechanical ventilation.
    3. State two criteria to wean from mechanical ventilation.
    4. State three assessments that should be performed for a patient on mechanical ventilation.
    5. State the three critical care criteria of ARDS.

As a semi retired RN I just watched Webinar recording of Care of the Patient with Mechanical Ventilation, thank you for presenting this information. I am currently working part time in a assisted living facility, we are not currently dealing with any Covid 19 residents but I feel that the information presented is a benefit to any future situations that may arise. Thank you , Roger Townsend
