    I started with grid, and then created custom hotkeys that mimic grid. I think custom hotkeys are vastly superior to the built-in grid system.
    The problem with using the built-in grid system is that it's impossible to change or tweak specific keys without changing _everything_, which is so difficult to work with.
    I started off with 100% default grid no changes at all, then after that created custom hotkey profile that mimics grid 99% (Very easy to get used to, almost no changes at all).
    Then, as you need or see fit, just slowly make adjustments on the specific buttons that need to be shifted (Separate scan and lift by some distance, move more things to q/w/e, DEFINITELY move z/x to q/w for probe's construction menus, swap attack-move to "r" and patrol to "t", etc).
    Ideally the change improves the ergonomics so much that it's actually easier to get used to the new hotkeys than it is to keep using the bad hotkeys (Moving more and more hotkeys to q/w/e is basically easier and feels better almost instantly). Index finger hitting "r" for attack-move feels better than reaching to "t" basically instantly.
    The most important part is that all of the units and build menus are full unmodified grid, even while spells all go to q/w/e. Other idea is that spells go to c/v/b so that middle three fingers hit control groups while thumb spellcasts.
    ^ The above steps I think are worth it hands-down since it was virtually no retraining necessary at all. E.g. Probe construction menus on q/w is easier to use than z/x on basically the first game you ever play with it, even with many games of muscle memory on z/x.
    ==
    The biggest change I did _after_ that was shift the grid over 2 spots so that QW/AS/ZX are easy-access control and camera groups, which basically just turns it into grid-based core lite. That takes a few days to get used to since your fingers shift, but still not that bad. Whether or not that was worth the retrain is debatable, since you basically have to play unranked to get used to it. The earlier suggestions require no retraining / never have to leave ladder or take an MMR hit so I recommend it without reservation.

    Biggest issue for me is, that Q is for selecting larva and then after selecting it Q is for building Drones. If you are too fast, you will build Drones instead of other units. Spamming is harder.
    Beside that, I like GRID very much.

    Thanks for the vid. I've been a Standard + Quick Cast for a LONG time. Have been looking to switch to GRID for a long time. Have to reprogram my brain but I am committed to it this time!

      Why switch to grid? Grid is good for newbies but Core would be better if you're going to retrain your brain anyway

    awesome video! wanted to add on the customization part, i changed a few army hotkeys to work on my 7-0 keys cuz i want everything on the left side. spacebar, `, and caps lock can work as number keys did before :)

    I love grid for when I'm in the build card or in a structure to train, research, etc. But when commanding units, I want the standard layout. Especially A to attack.

    I used to use the core ver 3. As a casual player in platinum. It kind of sucks when you are playing custom arcade games with the core because new key bindings may be used. I started playing on my laptop and switched to the grid after 3ish years of the core. Then when I recently played on my home pc. I tryed the core and was making a lot of mistakes as I had got used to the grid a bit. Grid is great in terms of all they keys are just mapped out. I still accidentally lift my cc's though, which does suck.

    I have been playing heroes of the storm for about 6 years. And then picked up Starcraft about 2 years ago playing standard however sc2 I’ve been losing games because I can’t fight well. So I made everything QWERTY A D and use the S key as Stop. All the units main abilities are Q, all the main production from my buildings are Q, and then A and D for building transformations on Terran. And all the upgrades are QWE so mainly everything is QWE and then extension RT and then for third and battle cruisers it’s on B. And the the orbitals scans are Q and boost on media are Q. Similar to the core but I don’t like to press the lower 3rd keys like zxcbn

      yeah honestly, if i could go back in time and change things to start, i would def move more things higher up on the keyboard. sounds like a cozy setup!!

      This video is very informative. I've never tried grid but this sounds like the easiest layout to pickup, I'll probably recommend this layout for new people. Thanks Hapa!

      does the core try to keep your left hand around the centre so you can reach the 6, 7, 8, 9 control groups easier?

    • @Ninjadasian
      @Ninjadasian 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tambaz2276 The Core moves all the control groups around into a vertical layout. So for example, K,L,I,O,8,9 are control groups in my version, the latest has them a bit different but hopefully you get the idea
