That planar face tracker is pretty quick and certainly accurate enough. Beyond fixing textures, one of the salient problems - usually for faces - is how digital cameras tend to desaturate the shaded portions of faces. I recall being in a projection room in LA, where we showed the senior staff at Arri, an A/B comparison wipe of the dimly-lit faces in the interior (cabin) scene in "Hateful Eight". The A side showed the Panavision capture, and the B side the Alexa 65. While the film capture was very grainy it was deep, rich and colourful ; the Alexa's output was very clean but essentially grey. The colourist was saying "At least with the film I have something to hang on to - I can tweak the shade ; with the Alexa I have nothing". This was a while back and it's entirely possible that Harald Brendel subsequently tuned the AWG profile to better render dimly-lit flesh tones ; the rendition of the Alexa 35 is certainly superior to that era's tech. But if you look at the lady in the car, it's pretty clear to me that the shading on her face, while holding colour, is rather dull. All this to say that beyond tweaking the LUT itself such that dark flesh tones have more 'plenitude' one could use the planar tracker to generate a mask, which then would be intersected with a luminance mask, to focus on the shading. A laborious and costly path, no doubt, but a worthwhile one to consider for an equally expensive money shot - say for a commercial or a scene with an A-list actor. I designed a dedicated tool for this, which is shelved somewhere - it worked purely in colour space, so no tracking required, but it was tricky to use : By working in the colour domain you have less control over the morphological (spatial) effect, but you have high colour consistency. Working in the spatial domain you have more control over the gradient, etc. No one says it's easy ;-) but this sort of attention to detail is par for the course when you're doing pro work. To round up the topic I'll mention that how you treat the shade on faces is as old as oil painting itself and by itself a serious artistic topic ; you can use the sfumato technique of our forebears, as you can go wild and do Fauvism. Endless fun, no doubt.
Thank you for this great insight. Yes, the detail in the girls face is not so perfect as this was a commercial I worked on maybe 12 years ago now (I recall it was Canon in HD so not todays high spec). The color hue throughout a face (forehead, nose, chin etc) is an important factor and I think this FR tool helps with that. With the side light - this needs to be used super subtle - in this YT episode I over do it a bit (without being ridiculous) but I still use static power windows too for relight as the light doesn't move with a face. Im usually subtly on the sfumato side of the fence with doc work that i do a lot of - music videos - anything goes! Joy's of our art! All great talking points - love to chat more with you on this too...maybe DM on Insta ? Thanks again, Darren
Knowing Tarantino's total aversion to digital capture and displays. I'm surprised to hear about this test footage. That an Alexa was allowed anywhere near his set. Or did I misunderstand, that the Alexa 65 footage was from a different but somewhat equivalent shoot? And not actually done on the Hateful 8 set? If so, we have to consider the subtle differences that different lighting setups gives us. :)
Oh wow! Had been struggling for so long with getting the old refinement tool to improve faces to what I wanted, I almost gave up and hadn't considered the latest version was any better. Your video changes everything! Thanks Darren!
I forgot about the side lighting feature they added to the tool. That's huge for a less processor intensive "Relight" feature that might need to shape the contrast of someone's face. I remember having to fix that type of thing a few years ago for a long talking head piece. Not the most fun in the world, but it would've been significantly easier with this. Excellent stuff as always Darren!
I had a question Darren, I use your fixed tree. Where do you suggest I put the Noise Reduction node? Before the log>DWG node or after that and before Exp/bal.
Thank you so much for doing such an in-depth review of Face Refinement, Darren! The tool has certainly improved massively in Resolve 19 and would definitely save a lot of time compared to the traditional route or Power Windows and manual corrections. Thank you, again!

FINALLY! I've been waiting for this feature for a long time! Thanks for the tutorial Darren! Personnally, I do use the eyes ''brightening'' slider, but at a VERY minimal value (like 0.05 or less, as just 0.1 is often too strong already). I find that when I set it so the effect is barely noticeable when toggling ON/OFF, it pretty much always look like an improvement. Tracking must be perfect though, so now I'm VERY happy! :)
This is brilliant. I didn't read the release notes carefully enough! While FR worked well for me in interviews, it was sometimes broken in narrative work. I would find zooming in on a previous node could help get a better track. Now this tool can be used in any type of work.
Great stuff, thanks Darren! Glad it’s now usable, bailed out on the first version after struggling no make it look natural. And thanks for being the crazy man walking round Brighton with an OP3, I’m sure people got out of your way quite quickly..

I've had version 19 running for 2 or 3 weeks but hadn't actually noticed that FR was updated (I mean, I don't use it on every video I work on and I don't work on videos as my main job), so this is particularly useful information. Edit added after trying it: I don't think you mentioned this explicitly but it's noticeably faster at detecting/tracking the face in 19 than in previous versions. I used to expect 2-3 times the playing time of a clip, i.e. 10-15 fps for a video shot at 30fps. Now it tells me that it's tracking at 27fps (if you remember to disable all nodes before the FR one), i.e. a good twice the speed. Yes, my graphics card is a bit old!

Great video. Thank you. Very helpful. One note: it does seem that all the features in this video are available not just in DR 19 but in the older DR 18.6 as well.
If you're looking to buy Studio, and you REALLY should buy studio...it's so worth it for Magic Mask and transcription alone....but when I was shopping for it in the US I got the speed editor and I STRONGLY recommend doing that. Studio is $299 but for $399 you can get the speed editor with the Studio license. That device is absolutely incredible and it's so good for going through footage lightning fast. For a hundred extra bucks it's worth every penny if you're editing on a professional level.
Great run through of the tool! Feel free to answer this or not, but I've always been curious how a pro like yourself approaches talking to a client about this. Do you do it and just not tell them? Do you ask them if they want it? It can be a very touchy subject.
Hi Darren! A fan from Brazil here. Have you ever had the situation where tracking is done but the effects don't work? I've been having this problem since version 17.. All the best!
It's a great tool, but I am really missing the ability from version 18 to analyze a long clip at once. If it loses the face, it will not resume analyzing when the face returns to the frame. Quite annoying if you film a long talking head sequence where you leave the chair multiple times and return to continue. This worked so beautifully before the upgrade.
Thanks. Yes, the tool has to be used when it seems fit. that is why I only use this when its going to see me through a whole job, else I still use traditional tools.
@@DarrenMostynI am in frame in the entire final video but it loses tracking when I get up from the chair to rewind the teleprompter. In Resolve 18 it didn’t.
Thanks for sharing Darren always educating us. Could I ask a question I’ve recently purchased studio version and looking to upgrade my laptop and going over to apple. I’ve not long started on TH-cam so at the earliest stages of learning editing etc. what would be a good base apple machine to get ? Best wishes Graham

How are you liking the Osmo 3? I've got the original Osmo and my mate has version 3. I can't believe how good the images are out of this little pocket of power.
I love it Frank. hated my ZV-1 from day 1 and never been shy in saying so. Its so easy to use. No ND is my only gripe but you can buy them as filters. Linked with the DJI mics its fantastic. Hope you are well? darren.
@@DarrenMostyn I’m doing well, thanks. As for my mate, he built his TH-cam channel around the Osmo. I never liked using ND filters on my Osmo. Tiny sensor screamed out for light to work properly. I found that an ND filter just made the image noisey. You’ll be getting a DJI Ronin 4D next 🤣
OK . . . stupid question, can I copy some of those settings and apply them to other clips that have the person's face in them? I understand the mask etc would be different, but I could have a starting place for skin and eyes, etc. THX!
HELP! I have been subscribed for a long time and know that you are my best bet for an answer ... Scenario: Color Page, any number of nodes selected (i.e. 2 or more), some nodes enabled, some disabled. Is there a simple, fast key combo to toggle the selected node's status (enabled to disabled AND disabled to enabled)? This would be for quick comparing of alternate variations of those node(s). I can often make a duplicate stacked clip on the Edit Page and then just toggle the top clip on/off, but with complicated situations that becomes very cumbersome. So something similar to how Control-D works on the Color Page with selected nodes (I was hoping that would do the trick, but Control-D will sync all other selected nodes to the status of the active node (when Control-D is pressed the first time), and subsequent presses will a toggle all those selected nodes on/off together. Next thought, I was hoping that Control-Shift-D would do the trick, but it appears to do nothing (HINT for BlackMagic). Any ideas? Thank you.
@@DarrenMostyn Thanks (anyway). Darned, the Windows "Control" key is the equivalent key for Mac's "option" key, but Control/ALT/D does nothing, darned. ALT/D, however, does toggle all nodes on/off (regardless of node selection status). Maybe a (windows user) subscriber knows if there is another keyboard combo? Again, thank you.
In my experience with this tool as well as magic mask, the masking looks great on a still frame. But play it out and the mask just wildly jumps all over the image. I'll often go super strong on an adjustment to see it clearly / for testing as you did with the lips. Lighting usually changes any time the subject moves so it's just about impossible to get it dialed in without keyframing every frame. Granted, I haven't used v19 much as I'm rebuilding my setup ATM so maybe it's better now.
I think the jumping around while animated was the problem for everyone - this new version has been updated so that it not only tracks better but you can now fix most of those situations - as Darren demonstrated above. V16 in my opinion unless it was a talking head video, it was unusable in a professional session. But I might be adding it back into my fixed node tree now. By making a compound node I can keep all ripple functionality and still be able to go inside the compound node and use the OFX.
yes, as I mention in here I dont use any of those functions that dont work or show as artificial. I show what elements I like in this tool. Thanks. V19 is MILES better
Why do software applications like CapCut perform better in skin enhancement? I’m genuinely curious about this. Could you please create a video on this topic?
I dont have capcut so I can’t do a video? How many Hollywood feature films have been graded using Capcut? Are their skin tools really better, or just easier to use?
Recently found you as I'm slowly but surely moving over to resolve for some things. I just started working with this tool, but I need to touch up the client's neck. This tool doesn't address this. I've had to resort to combining the face refinement tool alongside a power window for the neck requiring me to track his neck while avoiding his chin. Do you have any wisdom on how to better accomplish this?
If you sign up to my email newsletter you'll be notified when the next Masterclass is running. Link is at the bottom of the decsription in each video. Thanks
The problem with version 19 is that it does not find the face well or does not find it at all if the person is lying in the shot. I checked the same shots in version 18 and everything is fine there
If the talent waves their arms around in front of their face while talking, it looses the track. Granted, fixing it was easy: scrub to where the track was lost, find the next frame where the face was revealed and then click the Track button again. Having said that, by the 15th time, it gets tedious
@@DarrenMostyn That's true. FWIW, I've never noticed. The effect is always subtle. In any case, Face Enhance is essential, esp. when people are used to performing cosmetic surgery to their face on a smart phone and you're making stuff for the internet. 'Can you narrow my jaw?' 'No.' 'That doesn't seem very professional.' 🤭 'Can you make me speak Japanese?' Face Enhance is an essential miracle. TBH, Face Enhance is Resolve's job in the workflow at the moment

She didn't really need retouching. If I did the amount I would do for broadcast or commercial you would not see it on TH-cam after compression - Im explaining the tools and vocally emphasising all the time to be subtle but have to slightly excaggerate. Hope that explains - I used the same clip as I thought was nice to use the same clip I used on my original FR video 4 years ago - maybe being too nostalgic. Hope you got something out of the video anyway. Thank you Barbaros.

Great video. Thank you. Very helpful. One note: it does seem that all the features in this video are available not just in DR 19 but in the older DR 18.6 as well.
Nope.
Awesome Video! How did you achieve the VHS-Effect in the Intro?
Brilliant! just want I need! your awesome, thank you :)
You're welcome!
And of course Darren Mostyn made the best Speed Editor tutorial on the internet.
Good advice!
@@DarrenMostyn Thank you for all your incredible work, Darren.

Thank you my friend.
Great run through of the tool! Feel free to answer this or not, but I've always been curious how a pro like yourself approaches talking to a client about this. Do you do it and just not tell them? Do you ask them if they want it? It can be a very touchy subject.
too deep to answer in a comment. Something I talk about in my Masterclasses.

The face refinement tool looks pretty amazing! Can you output the individual "face parts" mattes into other nodes for more traditional grading?
no you cant. The face mask is what is created as shown early in the video.
@@DarrenMostyn thanks Darren. Is it possible to pipe the matte output in order to export an RGBA image in the delivery page?
thank you!!
You're welcome!
Amazing!
Thank you and... Blackmagic! ;-)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Darren! A fan from Brazil here. Have you ever had the situation where tracking is done but the effects don't work? I've been having this problem since version 17.. All the best!
No I haven't come across that.
@@DarrenMostyn TKS!!
What app are you using for the screen record and allowing that Halo and zoom around the mouse ? Love the video, thanks!!!
Thank you so much!
A quick question. How do you color grade your OP3 footage? I think DLogM is not the same with DLog from drones.
Darren what is your color management settings for grading Osmo pocket 3 buddy especially the Dlog buddy 🙏🙏
Nice❤️
Thanks for sharing Darren always educating us. Could I ask a question I’ve recently purchased studio version and looking to upgrade my laptop and going over to apple. I’ve not long started on TH-cam so at the earliest stages of learning editing etc. what would be a good base apple machine to get ? Best wishes Graham
anything silicon going to run well TBH! Im on M2 Ultra with 128Gb - love it!
@@DarrenMostyn thanks Darren 👍
Hi Darren, what CST do you use for Dlog-m
th-cam.com/video/il409rHulr8/w-d-xo.html
Very interesting !
Do i still need photoshop for face retouching (Socialmedia, Business fotos) or can i do it also in DR ?
photos usually much higher resolution than say 4K video. You can though. but its really designed for video and moving image.
I use resolve for social media photo editing and 4k is more than enough. Sometimes i take stills from full hd videos and use it for social and no one ever complains about resolution. It looks great @@DarrenMostyn
THX!
doesn't make any sense to do that and it wouldn't work. Simply retrack each time.
@@DarrenMostyngotcha. Thx.
Guauuuu!!! great!!
Any ideas? Thank you.
Option/ALT D on a Mac.
Hi Darren...why the effects on the right side doesn't appear while I press Shift+F ? Just the full screen which appear. Thanks
Sorry, I have no idea. It works for me.
Just go to the Keyboard Customization and search for Full Page Viewer under (Viewer Mode) assign Shift + F to it and you're good to go✌🏻
@@fasiasad Its assigned by default ?
@@fasiasad zalready with that set. The issue was…the right menu from effects didn’t appear as Darren’s
@@DarrenMostyn No it's not, I did that after watching your video, pretty helpful tho, thanks to you
In my experience with this tool as well as magic mask, the masking looks great on a still frame.
@@JimRobinson-colors That's great! Their AI / neural is getting to be so good.
Hi, do a lesson on DJI Osmo Pocket 3 - how to convert HLG to BMDGen5 or DWG and D-Log M correctly
seeing as you asked so nicely!
Do you actually need to correct the face tracker frame by frame? Isn't it possible to manually correct a keyframe and restart the tracker from there?
yes you can do that.
@@DarrenMostyn Thanks. I'm starting to get the hang of it, but it can get confusing especially with multiple parts in a clip that needs correction.
Do you have any wisdom on how to better accomplish this?
use beauty tool with a power window IMO.
Can it fix crooked teeth too?
Not yet

The problem with version 19 is that it does not find the face well or does not find it at all if the person is lying in the shot. I checked the same shots in version 18 and everything is fine there
OK, Im getting good experience so far TBH.
perhaps try to rotate show 90 degrees then track it then rotate back? Ive zoomed in on previous FR to help it track then zoom back out and it held.
now if they can add aging and de aging filters to this and we would be set, I know that involves little bit of AI , but i think they can do it
At last!!!
appreciated
If the talent waves their arms around in front of their face while talking, it looses the track. Granted, fixing it was easy: scrub to where the track was lost, find the next frame where the face was revealed and then click the Track button again. Having said that, by the 15th time, it gets tedious
well its not really the tool to use if thats the case as the 'effect' you are adding 'may' become visible through the arms depending what it is.
@@DarrenMostyn That's true. FWIW, I've never noticed. The effect is always subtle.
In any case, Face Enhance is essential, esp. when people are used to performing cosmetic surgery to their face on a smart phone and you're making stuff for the internet.
'Can you narrow my jaw?'
'No.'
'That doesn't seem very professional.'
🤭
'Can you make me speak Japanese?'
Face Enhance is an essential miracle. TBH, Face Enhance is Resolve's job in the workflow at the moment
Face refine doesn't have to be about so called 'vanity' changes...side light is a great example of this
Face refine does not work on John Cena…
In Ted Lasso there was an episode, where the actress had some nose issues, and they blurred the F out of it :D
Bad use if the tools. You shouldn't see what i do in FR tool if Im using it correctly.
@@DarrenMostyn I think if you work in post production, you just have an eye for it
At this time still not a really retouch tool. 😢
Combined with other effects in Resolve you can achieve pretty much anything.
They need to add a turkey neck adjustment
😂😂

mine flies! Have you got other stuff going on too ? tip - disable NR etc when you do face refinement and switch stuff back on after if you need more power - same for tracking in general.
@@DarrenMostyn thanks, It went up to 18fps when I disabled all color grading and other processes. Still preatty slow but it was 4k and no proxies
I think the skins look better without it.
