This movie never gets old. One of my many 90s guilty pleasures. And for all of the film's flaws, some of the special effects were pretty groundbreaking at the time. And also the score is excellent. Mark Mancina did a great job with it. One of the best scores of the 90s IMHO.
I mostly agree with you here. Story definitely doesn't hold up and so many characters are packed in, but I do love Hunt and Bill (R.I.P.), the music and the action. But, I do have to disagree with you on the effects there for the most part. Granted, most effects from the 90s don't hold up but most of these in this film does (excluding the iconic cow). Outside from the Wizard of Oz, these are the best tornado effects I've ever seen. And the sound design matches the power of the storms--even though in real life, tornadoes sound far from being animalistic killers.
Thanks for the comment. While I do say that some of the effects look dated, I also mentioned that a lot of the effects and major action set pieces are still extremely enjoyable and intense. I don't hate the movie by any means. It was a fun time!
Yeah I totally agree! Twister actually has the best tornado effects in the last 3 decades which is an amazing achievement. The Day after tomorrow comes close, but it has this very unrealistic over the top CGI look to it, whereas the tornados in twister look really convincing. Industrial light and magic basically invented particle physics when doing the effects for this film
It’s hard to review a movie and appreciate it for what it is if you’re from a different generation. Back then movies like these are more appreciated because they were fresh. The audience now find more faults in them because the younger audience find them hard to relate to in comparison to the movies today. I guess it’s understandable.
You cannot expect to experience these movies the same way as someone from that time when they were released. It was simply a different vibe. Whether you enjoy it or not, the experience will not be the same. Back then you had a good time and had a laugh. And if it wasn't for the breakthrough in new special effects and sound effects that these movies brought, we wouldn't be where we are today. Most of these movies were amazing because of these breakthroughs. Nowadays movies have ALL of the special effects but just lack that "something special". The people in most of them don't even feel like they could be real people and are for that reason not relatable or enjoyable or likeable for that matter. At least in my opinion. I've watched Twister I don't even know how many times over the years and still enjoy it heartily. The same goes for Independence Day, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, Alien, Predator, etc. And there's almost always one line in those movies that became a thing to repeat. I recently watched Horizon Line for example and I can't imagine going through that movie a second time. And the look of that movie was beautiful. But the movie itself was meh. I encourage you to blast Van Halen while riding around in a little van. You might actually enjoy it! 🙂 Still glad you somewhat still enjoyed the movies.
@@taivo5753 Thank you. Movies were definitely more appreciated like you mentioned. He said he still liked the movie for the most part, so I ain't mad. Hehe.
I feel like disaster movies peaked with Twister and Independence Day. Modern disaster movies are too focused on being "big" and "important", they took on a radically somber tone after 9/11. Twister is perfect to me. It's just impressive enough to be a spectacle but just campy and silly enough to be a comfy watch.
One of my childhood favorite movies! Still enjoy it today :) the special effects still hold up really well I think, I love the characters, the chemistry between Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt is great, I like Aunt Meg, and I love the orchestral score by Mark Mancina! Not enough people talk about the soundtrack in my opinion
See, I DID find that the team members had personality, despite them not needing to have personalities as minor characters, they seemed entirely real to me! And the fact that Jo wasn't the only woman on the team mattered to me.
A real go-to guilty pleasure for me , especially the scene where they stop of at Helen Hunts mum's farm to eat / freshen up. I think what sees this film through to the ending is the camaraderie of team Bill/Jo . The reviewer is right - there are far too many characterless characters but I like watching them all ( especially PSH)
@@BrandoCritic Nice one BC . I've just subscribed & looking forward to more of your vids. I watched Rambo: Last Blood last night and loved every cliched minute of it. Hope you've done a review ?
Yeah, and the one guy on the team explains how a Cat 5 tornado is a “finger of God.” My advice, after this excellent scene which is about midway through the movie, start moving away from the movie. I mean, when you take a break to use the bathroom or get something to eat, maybe watch something else when you come back. 😜 And Bill’s new fiancée Melissa is also a sex therapist. In fact, in one and only one scene early in the movie she’s giving advice to a client as a twister is approaching. Good single scene, but they could have done so much more with her character. Just a dull plot aspect, not a true love triangle in any sense.
This film owes it's plot structure to His Girl Friday. I've always had a soft spot for Twister. A good drinking game is to sink a shot every time Bill Paxton says, 'Son of a bitch'.
Well I am not a huge disaster movie fan. I do not have a very favorable disposition towards disaster movies. Hence I may have a bias against them. Of course I do remember Twister was a big hit in 1990's, so much so that it was talked in the same breath as Jurassic Park and Independence day. And I had wanted to see it since then and finally I have. How good is it. Positives - Well I like the theme of the movie. The whole idea of tornadoes and studying them was great. I also thought they kind of did well to try and mix a strong human element by showing the relation of leads and the rivalry between 2 groups. Visual Effects - Its the real star of the movie. They do feel dated but you have to hand it to the visual effects of the movie for creating the thrill and the spectacle in this movie with a degree of authenticity. Cinematography is also very good and it really captures the outdoor locations and vehicle movements and the impact of the tornadoes very well. Negatives - Though Twister does have a very comprehensive screenplay covering several idea, it never quite manages to create the mood of tension and thrill as it ought to. Yes the tornado scenes are shot well and exciting but the narrative or the story is never able to create the excitement that was promised when the movie began. Once the first act is over you are able to figure out what the movie where the movie would go from here and it actually plays out exactly the same way. The relationship angle is also not very convincing. Its there and it plays its part but it never really impresses you. On the other hand the rivalry angle with two groups with different types of backgrounds is more appealing and works better than the relationship track. Unfortunately its not given the important it deserved. Had Twister's narrative been based on that track it would have been dramatically more appealing and exciting. Also the scientific depth or intelligence that this movie required is not there. Yes there are a few references to a some scientific concepts but since that was the main motive of the movie it required better and detailed presentation of those ideas. They are just not grounded into screenplay. I would give Twister an 6. I wish I could have given it more. Twister really takes a big aim but falls short by a lot. There is a bit of everything in it. Tornadoes, a love triangle, pursuing science for profit versus altruistic motives. And it does a bit of everything right. But it is not able to create the level of tension or excitement, or present its main idea as emphatically as it could have. An ambitious attempt that falls short. but still worth watching. And yes as for actors. I thought Helen Hunt is the best. Playing the lovelorn ex-wife who wants to pursue her ambition and yet wants her relationship her character is probably the best structured. The other leads never quite get a chance and their motives are rather not as convincing. I thought the actor playing the "bad" guy did a great job and probably deserved a longer role. The rest of the support cast are just ordinary. They really just do their part without much contribution.
Stephen Larner I mean my “film school brain”. The side of my brain that over analyzes movies as opposed to watching them for entertainment. It’s just a figure of speech
@@BrandoCritic your figure of speech isn't in question. I was joking that the CGI now is just as bad as the day they started using it and usually not a good measure to determine if a movie is dated or not. Now the style of clothing, lifestyle and cell phones is another story.
Stephen Larner Well, I would assume that people at the time were blown away by these effects. I mean, how did this movie become the 2nd highest grossing film of that year?
I've been watching this movie since I was around 7-8 years old, and it's one of my all-time favorites.

It didn't age well at all I realized as as a kid I had no real idea what this movie was about watching it as a an adult was just exhausting
A fun time, but yes. Very dated!

I don't know if I buy that argument. Because I can go back and see movies like Wizard of Oz which is almost 90 years old and still love it

I like how the tornados make some roaring sounds, which seems to happen in RL too sometimes. Gives the tornados a way more threatening aura.
Yes. This movie does give us a real antagonizing force!
The movies sounds are just camel sounds
I watch this movie at least once a year together with, Contact, Jurassic park 1 & 2, Mrs Doubtfire and Hook.
