  • Black Vanlife in America: Today we have a frank and honest conversation about what is like to be a black van dweller in America with Lovell and Paris Lee. We continue our conversation with this amazing young millennial couple from Novel Kulture TH-cam Channel.
Lovell and Paris Lee are Navy vets, full-time students, and digital nomads. Lovell is a marketing student and freelance marketer. Paris recently graduated as a filmmaking student, and they both are freelance videographers. They mostly have stealth parked during their 3 year van life journey- while they were students in densely populated urban areas. They have a 7 camera security system on their van with night vision that is streams "live" to anyone with the password.
This is a very important, conversation of what life in a van is like from their perspective as black van dwellers. So there is SO much we can all learn from their experiences on the road!

I just did a search of CheapRVliving for the word "police" and this was one of the few things that came up.
I would imagine there must be quite a few stories from black or white about police encounters, and I would suspect that it is a subject that gets swept under the rug, as Bob used that term. I would even suspect there are incidents of police abuse or force that people do not or can not talk about.

Thanks Bob for being "willing" to do this video and have this discussion on your platform, i must admit, i was surprised (pleasantly).. as a woman of color who has purchased a bus and plans to hit the road (permanently) myself, this is ALWAYS a concern, and it truly amazes me how most (NOT ALL) people of other ethnicities sometime act as if they didn't realize that this is a problem for blacks in "America", so thank you again Bob for being brave enough to shed some light on it for those in the back of the class, who may have slept thru this part 😅 .. i also appreciate this couple's insight and the information they shared concerning "us" needing to plan and take responsibility for safe guarding our own selves while on the road, i too have an abundance of security cameras for my vehicle and i do understand the importance of keeping a level head and demeanor when approached.. it's just sad that we have to "change ourselves" just to prayerfully make it thru what's called or considered a "routine stop" 🤨 or being accused of "suspicious activities" when doing everyday, average things that everyone else does, the only difference being is that we are doing them "while being black"..

Thanks for your words, Shawna. I’m a 74-year-old woman who wants to become a nomad but I’m hesitant because of so much racist violence in the country. I’m concerned about random acts of hate, violence, or being ridiculed or in danger for wearing a mask. One nomad shared on her channel and I’ve heard it from locals where I live that some independent businesses tell customers that masks aren't required.

As a long time subscriber of your channel and women of color, thank you for doing this video.
I've seen countless videos you've done interviewing nomads saying how safe they feel on the road. What I do know is my worry is different. Ask yourself, how many times have you been pulled over and accused of stealing your own vehicle? As a person of color, solo work camper and female, my husband (white male) worries for me, so for now I only work camp up to a couple states away. I just don't have the same liberties of feeling safe and secure as my fellow white brothers and sisters in this country, without tons of research. If I'm thinking about work camping for a season in a new location/ state, l look up that location of employment to see if it falls in a Sun Down county first ( if u don't know what that is google it), this also goes for traveling and where to over night stay. Frankly it's mentally exhausting at times. These challenges makes it harder for people of color to live a carefree rv life- that's why you don't see many people of color in this life style-by choice.
It just breakers my 😞heart at times, but I remain positive.
Thanks Again Bob and Novel Kulture

Keep the conversation going. You two can make a difference by what you’re doing. If you could only have this conversation at police academies, when they are young and being trained. It is about education and changing perceptions of the officers. IMHO change must happen at the training academies to educate young officers on all the cultures they will encounter as officers. Within any nursing curriculum diversity and cultural education is part of the basic nursing core to allow nurses to provide care across all cultures in our society. Kudos to this couple and what they are doing to achieve their dreams.

Appreciated the words of wisdom from Lovell and Paris. I subscribed and look forward to following their travels. I’m not on the road yet but anticipating a 2 year plan. Love your show Bob, and all the nomads.

I've been neck deep into vanlife videos for over a year now and had no idea your ground breaking videos even existed. For that I'm ashamed and enlightened at the same time. I have a lot to catch up on but this series alone is so important and obviously something I can personally relate to! Thanks for what you're doing Bob!!

Thank you for having this candid conversation. We really shouldn't have to jump through hoops to exist in peace but 🤷🏾‍♀️. They gave great tips for not escalating encounters and ensuring systems for maintaining safety are in place. Much appreciated. Safe travels to you all.

My son had an RV parked on the street in front of his duplex; a neighborhood trouble maker called police! He said it needed to be moved but would not fit in his driveway! Ridiculous!
