A friend shared John's first album with me in about 1978, when I was still in HS and he's enhanced my life ever since. God has clearly blessed this big old goofy world with yet one more truly American treasure known as John Prine and we won't really ever need to miss him cuz his timely singing commentary will stay with forever.
Beautiful sound, awesome voice, peaceful song, with John's humor in ever line!!! But it's true: Life and this world are definitely 'goofy'..........a nice way to say "crazy," huh?
Earlier this year I stumbled upon this guy and was absolutely surprised that I’d not heard of him before as he stands with all the other top country singers, how come
John knew even then. We have a world where nobody knows a what a woman IS and of "mostly peaceful" riots and...well goofiness ensues, our world has been subsumed with goofiness. Miss you, brother. I can't image what songs John could have made out of this current state of insane goofiness.
Last year, as a thank you gift to my son-in-law, who treated me to a ticket to attend John Prine's Indianapolis concert at Butler University with him, I gave him a copy of John Prine's book, "Beyond Words." The book is chock full of entertaining tidbits about the best songs in John's vast library of recordings. Listening to this song, "It's A Big Old Goofy World" brought back cherished memories of sitting at the dining room table, discussing the story behind this song. According to the book, Prine's mother got involved with him in making a list of similes, which are a form of metaphors that use a figure of speech that compares two things and which use connecting words such as like, as, so, than, etc., to do so. Examples from the song would be phrases like "big as a house" and "quiet as a mouse." The book contains a reproduction of the tablet paper John used showing his actual lists of the scribbled notes he and his mother came up with as possibilities for John to draw from in writing the song lyrics. Like the other songs in the book, it contains photographs from John's personal albums related to each song, guitar chords, final lyrics and backstory details related to the crafting of each song featured in the book. I know John was very fond of his mother, and in addition to the cleverness of the song itself, I believe it was John's own memories of his mother's involvement in helping him write the song, that always seemed to bring a hint of a smile to his face when he performed this song in concert. That's something special about John Prine. Sure, he writes songs that feature a whole range of emotions, from sad and serious to corny and goofy, but unlike the constant scowl of Bob Dylan, when the material allows it, Prine is able to smile. That's who John Prine is-Dylan with a smile.
