The Dolphin is a good price for a 2nd car for city commutes. Doesn't need to be flashy to just get one to work and back and would be easy to park and drive in a cramped city. Would pair well with a nice family sized sedan or suv. My daughter is nuts about small sized cars and wants one in the pink trim.
i think this is a totally fair price vs gear compromise as it also protects current Dolphin and Atto3 owners... even a Corolla, they have different trim and gear levels and no one ever complained about it....
I'm curious as to how the Dolphin Essential compares to the equivalent MG4 and Funky Ca... I mean GWM Ora (I do miss the "Funky Cat" moniker though lol )
As mentioned in the video, every dollar counts in this segment of the market and although the MG4 Excite51 is better spec’d in almost every regard, the pricing of the new Essential Dolphin will be hard to beat … unless MG temporarily drops their price again to $30k drive-away … your move MG! (And GWM too)
That is a very impressive milestone in pricing. I suspect it will be enough to convince many people who otherwise wouldn't have, to at least put an EV on their new car short-list. And once there is a toe-hold on the short-list, many people will start looking at what upgrades other EV offer (and shop up?). Very interested to see how this affects sales numbers of all aggressively-priced EV this year (not just the 2 new 'Essentials' variants).
@shannonrussell7151 Sure, except I suspect competitors low-priced EV models might benefit too (so not _just_ BYD marketing, but a catalyst for EVs more generally?).
This is great. The extras can go with pleasure as far as I'm concerned. Who knows, maybe in 2026 we will see a $20k EV and they've removed the ANCAP requirement for lane keeping assist and other "default on" safety settings. (I'd rather set things once and not have it reset next time I start the car).
Don’t know if byd plans to bring the seagull to Australia. 😂 but I love cheap entry level city car with low maintenance cost. That said, the Hyundai inster EV is hard to sell fast if priced more than 35K 😂 although personally love its design, such a great looking car
I own a Dolphin and I didn’t buy it as a hot hatch. Also the MG 4 with its wide door sills, makes it hard to get out of. Also MG sales could take a huge lesson from BYD in customer service. MG 4 isn’t wireless Apple Car play either. But in regards to the slug comment, more than happy that I’m not the quickest to the next red light 🚦
Probably sunroof makes sense to remove the rest not so sure but sure maybe just remove all auto door locks and power windows and power seats and seat heater and use manual door mirrors. Don't used alloy wheels. No metallic paint. Take out all the cameras, the radar. Rear wiper. I mean where do you stop? I thought it was sold in china for like USD 5k???? Can't they sell it for reduced price cause they obviously making profit on it. Total cop out by byd. Not impressed

Agreed not a bad option as a first car for young adults and peace of mind for parents given the 5 star ANCAP

Yep agreed and Tesla need to learn from this too … heavily discounting the same car from owners who paid a huge premium initially leaves a sour taste

Amazing price
Hard to argue! 😃

Marketing 101.

@@strawwmann3131 maybe, but BYD want market share in their favour. They are ruthless and it all points to one thing - money.
We’ll continue to track sales data with Riz on our weekly live streams - very interesting times indeed
Great news
Sure is

Hopefully BYD bring their Seagull / Dolphin Mini - looks pretty sweet on the roads in China
I looks that this are the Dolphin and Atto 3 made in Thailand. These 2 cars got a significant price drop last year.
Ah I see … will need to examine the VINs of these new trims

Nek minit: Seagull / Dolphin Mini - Australia’s first sub $20k EV 😱
People will vote with its money , few months later will tell.
I am convinced to purchase Chinese brand !
It’s a decent enough car for the price
The Dolphin is a slug, poor performance compared to the competition, even the MG3 Hybrid is much faster, for equivalent price.
At 70kW max power it’s not fast!
