Well,if you think a bit more holistically,like an able seaman should,then a wind vane could save your vessel and the crew if you meet up with a catastrophy that disables your crew to such an extent that you have to sail short handed....as it is, two crew members have cracked ribs....plus big seas and headwinds...it could have been even worse...it which case a wind vane would have been an absolute necessity...I don't have all that much sailing experience,but I have sailed the South African coastal stretch between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth twice and it does not always look that pretty....Just announce your retirement from the race and use the wind vane...
Emergency steering if the rudder is disabled, primarily. And a prudent redundancy, I would be reluctant to sail the race without one even with full crew.
Evrica is the only boat in the whole fleet I noticed with a windvane... It is forbidden, so I think they don´t have all necessary parts on board... @@paulshell1729
