LIVE: Devastating wildfires rage in Portugal

Portugal is currently being ravaged by more than 100 active wildfires that have been burning since the start of the weekend. According to Portuguese authorities, there is the highest possible risk of wildfires breaking out across central and northern regions of the country and the threat level will remain “very high” until Friday. Temperatures have been exceeding 30C and seven people have died, with more than 40 people injured. If you have a trip to the country coming up, here’s what you need to know.

More than 23,000 acres of land has burned between Porto and Aveiro in the north, where around 70 residents were forced to flee over the weekend. Several houses have been destroyed in Albergaria-a-Velha and in Cabeceiras de Basto, in Braga. Police have closed motorways between the capital, Lisbon, and Porto and train connections have been suspended on two rail lines in northern Portugal.
