I also think this little piece of material culture was telling some intentional things about the characters. I think the ascot (the other fabric that you have documented Thanks) might be more about show buttoned up Stede was/how fully dressed in his gentleman persona he was in the scene. I've never realised how much travelling this necktie did, but in my defence, I was rather mesmerised by fuchsia gown and Ed's hair and makeup instead.
Did you notice that Ed wore it when he was suicidal in S2 and when Stede "rescued" him from death? It doesn't appear again, I think.

I haven't considered it, IDK if there is much to unpack there though, I feel like most of it is pretty upfront in the show, but I may look into it.
