Just completed removal of the fuser unit, replacement of both of the rollers, quick clean and also replacement of the 4 guide rollers. Would not have attempted this without this wonderful video. All in took me 50 mins. Very happy with the job and pleased this was cheaper and I suspect greener fix of our Brother DCP-9020CDW. It now has a new lease of life.
    Thank you again !!!

I have to do this soon, has taken me over a year to figure out why my prints were all crinkled and kept getting jammed! This is the guide I will be using to replace the rollers! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this

Over 2 years later and you're still helping people fix their printers! I just finished replacing the fuser roller (the black one, the red one looked fine) using this video as my "step-by-step" guide, and it went off without a hitch. Well, OK, with a couple, but those were my fault and not yours! (E.g., "I can get this out without removing that first!"... "Uh, OK, I got it out fine, but in order to put it BACK, I actually DO need to remove that!") Thanks SO much for taking the time to post this so old retired people like me can get their printers fixed at a reasonable cost! (Now we'll get to see if the roller I bought was of decent quality and will last, or if I'll need to do it again!)

Thanks for the video. Used it to successfully replace both rollers. Had an issue reinstalling the spring and snapped off the plastic tab. . Bent a nail and braced it the other side to attach the spring to. Tip attach to the plastic tab first and then attach to the metal bracket.

Thanks so much for your video - I was able to get a cheap pair of rollers instead of a very expensive fuser unit and it’s all up and running perfectly now, thanks to you! 😊

Thanks for the informative video. It’s worth mentioning (1) When re-attaching the springs, the black plastic tabs of the rubber roller assembly (the ones with the arrows pointing outwards) need to be set such that the rubber roller and the fuses roller are touching. It’s easy to have them set in the jam-clearing position which gives a gap between the 2 rollers. (2) Removing the springs with a hook tool from the metal tabs is better than trying to do so from the plastic tabs as you did. Safer to not break the plastic. (3) When bending the tabs of the fuses roller outwards after installing the plastic gear, better to just grab the tab with needle nose pliers instead of grabbing the outside of that plastic gear as he did so as to not break teeth of the gear if it’s old and brittle. Again, great video.

THANK YOU, my upper roller was damaged from sitting too long without use - the metal clips bit into it and broke the film and the orange surface inside it. You saved me a ton of money mate, thank you once more for sharing such a clear and detailed video.

    Hi,
very very helpful, thank you !!
I have repaired my brother MFC-9142CDN and it works very well. The 2 rolls cost 30 Euros, a complete new fuser unit more than 180 Euros.
So, it was a good deal for my wallet and for the environment anyway.

Hoping to save MFC-9340CDW from waste with this video. I looked inside and looks like the top fuser roller has the same damage as yours. Must be something about these Brother models haha. Thank you!

    • @PaoloMarcelli
      @PaoloMarcelli  2 ปีที่แล้ว

This is something that happens even in some other brands of printers, as for Brother printers I can tell you that now at work I repair mostly the newer versions (MFC-L9570CDW) and I encountered the same defect as in this video but usually it only happens if you reset the fuser counter without replacing it, so if you use the fuser unit for more than the amount of pages that is designed to do, the older models often fail prematurely.

Finally got my rollers in the mail and did this and it worked!
To anyone trying this, MAKE SURE you have the right tools--you WILL need tweezers for the spring part, a small screwdriver and some needle nose pliers. Go slow and make sure to document every part and catalog each part as you go, many of them look similar. The guy in this video you can tell has a lot of experience with these so he knows how they go back together, but you will do yourself a favor to catalog everything as you go, and TAKE PICS of how everything looked BEFORE you took it apart.
Pace yourself and go slow--remember this saves you almost 200 dollars (or slightly less depending on the price of the full unit for your printer), so its totally worth the time and effort!
My printer is the HL-3180CDW, so if anyone else is doing this for that printer, I can verify that this works, the only thing different is the 2 wires that connect the printer on the left are both white instead of white and blue, everything else is the same.

    • @PaoloMarcelli
      @PaoloMarcelli  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for writing about your experience :)
What you said is totally right, and also for the spring part now I use a proper spring hook (USAG 053 N) that I didn't have before. I go pretty fast in videos because then the video would be too long, but everyone should take the needed time to perform the repair. I've 7 years of experience and since November 2019 I work as a Brother authorized repair technician, it gets faster after you build knowledge and experience, but we all started from there :)

I had the video running on my iPad and would stop and start it as I replaced both rollers and the small printed circuit board (I damaged it removing the red connector and couldn’t get the solder to hold when I tried to repair).

Lol I damaged mine as well. I couldn't solder it back. I pulled the tab right out of the circuit board. I did however figure a work around. All I did was got two wires, one for each of the connections on the red connector and followed where each was going to on the circuit board. Plugged each end to another clip where the circuit lead to on the board, basically jumping the board to a direct connection. Worked like a charm lol.

You're a genius, man. Thanks a lot. You made me save a lot of money and plastic waste. It took me 2 hours to replace the rollers, now I have a printer like new! My black roller was exactly like yours, and I've never tried to print on adhesive paper, so I think that the problem is the printer. By the way a small metallic piece fell from the unit while changing the rollers and I couldn't find its place, so my printer has a piece missing now... Hope it's not very important to make it work 🤷😁

Thank you soooooo much for this video. Replacing the roller worked out ok although it took some time. I would probably not have done it without your detailed step-by-step instructions. (if I may, a very brief note: when you grab the little parts during reassembly, please hold them still for like a second in front of the camera to they can be more easily identified. But this is just a well-meant constructive hint and not a criticism of your great work).
    Another few observations.
*) during reassembly, the spring was easier to grab from the other side. Before I did it the way you suggested, and I used a twist tie before finagling it down to make it easy to grab and pull. This was (for me) easier than getting in the tight space with pliers (even though I own professional jewely pliers).
*) I used an old paper envelope (any paper or not-too-thick cardboard will do) and stuck the various screws in there in the order that I pulled them out. During re-assembly it was easy to just grab them in opposite order. Easy peasy.
    HTH.

Thank you so much for doing this video. I know they are a lot of work! For the most part I had the needed tools at hand and it took me 1-1-1/4 hours, as I had to stop the video and complete the actions you outline, which I totally expected. If I may make a couple suggestions, please. At one point, when it came to rerouting cables, you fast-forwarded through the process. This was a point where I wanted more time to see what was going on, not less. At several points it would have been helpful if you could have paused at least a second or two at the end of key steps so I could have seen the result. As it was, a couple of times the completed step was partially offscreen or your hand was in the way so the result never showed up. The video was also a bit dark with shadows at times.
Again, thanks for these instructions - they are MUCH MORE helpful than just reading text. You took a somewhat intimidating process and made it a lot easier. Thanks!

Thanks for this video! I have this same printer at my office and we are having quite a few problems with it. It's been jamming constantly for a year. Recently someone put a brand new belt unit in it. The paper jams at the back door near the fuser. About an inch is sticking out. Is this a fuser issue? The red roller on mine is very slick.
What about drum units? I noticed the ones in there are crappy non-oem ones. Would those contribute to the problem?

  • @evgenygridasov8455

I did not pay attention to the fuser roller orientation and as the result it did not rotate the lower roller correctly. Upon inserting it back to the printer, it went to "too hot - cooling" mode straight away and it also smelled burning plastic. Lower roleller burnt, upper roller baked int the residue of the upper roller. Both went to bin :( Reordered again, hope won't make same mistake. Tip for putting springs back together: I used a paper clip that I attached to the spring and pulled by the paper clip to reattach it back onto the hook.

Great! Took me a good 3 hours with some hiccups along the way. Especially at the replacement of the black roller where I was reinserting the gear. It wouldnt go smoothly in like with the old one so I spent a lot of time using pliers to adjust it. Ended up making some grooves on the gear which made the rotation slightly bumpy. Actually I did not have to go through that and the initial seating was fine. But everything turned out smoothly in the end and I finally have smooth paper again!

Thank you for you amazing video ! I have just changed my rollers without any difficulty. Just 2 things : 1) i am not sure that the paper on the roller cleaners (at the end) are from a previous bad usage (this paper is really well glued/well cut to the rollers and the gluing is perfectly straight). 2) Brother told me that this fuser roller problem is due to compatible cartridges exclusively... I am not sure they tell the truth in order to encourage us to buy genuine Brother products...

My printer is (HL-L3230cdw), but it recently started making these noises and then i realized the the two grey rollers on the back side have stopped turning and they wont allow the paper to spin and roll forward. That's why when the back door is shut, paper gets stuck as it can't come out from the front side. Can you let me know how I could fix it please? Thanks

Hi there, I just wanted to thank you for the great video. You may recall previously I had an issue with rectifying a fault when I replaced everything back together again (05 fault). It turns out that I was too rough when I removed the white and red leads from the board, so I ordered a new board from Ali Express for $15 and the printer is working fine now.....thank you again....Ken - London

Thanks! Another success with HL-3170 back to life and saving from landfill! Suggestions (1) the internal rollers appears to have OEM white tape rolled on, I removed anyway as your video has done..others noted similar (2) Reattaching the springs, I did the alternate side final attach as appears much easier with a small device to pull (3) fast video on the wires reattach, just have to slow it down. Feel like a electronic heart surgeon now :)

    Hi Paolo
Thank you very much for the video. However we replaced the black roller only and after we finished the printer has displayed on the screen "Print unable 05". Do you have a solution for us please ? The printer is a MFC 9140CDN.

Great video, Thanks for making it! One suggestion, using a spring tool such as a Jonard M-130/SX5 (hook end) on the other end of the spring to release the tension makes it very easy to remove and replace springs.

Thanks. Very helpful. 2 amendments: 1. remove the springs from the other side (metal on metal), not from the bottom (metal on plastic) the plastic lug can get broken very easily although you can replace it with a metal pin. 2. That stuff about the little rollers trapping sticky paper is I think wrong: these little rollers have a paper coating so be careful about fiddling. Otherwise 10 out of 10

Excellent video🙂. However i found it easier to asemble the spring from the other direction. First in the plastic and then in the metal.
