The South African accent is mostly an Afrikaans person speaking English, the difference in intonation between the two languages causes Afrikaans people to sound like this, and the same applies vice versa, an English person speaking Afrikaans is equally noticeable. The South African accent is mostly an Afrikaans person speaking English, the difference in intonation between the two languages causes Afrikaans people to sound like this, and the same applies vice versa, an English person speaking Afrikaans is equally noticeable. An English speaking person is what you hear in the ads, barre the VW ad, this is the closest to the South African accent that foreigners recognise.

Actually, I'm a South African from the 90s :P Despite that though, I'm not a huge fan of Afrikaans slang and South African culture in general, and when it's over the top like in that ad, it's really annoying.
