I live in a small town. And there is a person who has a rare muscle/neurological condition. He can walk just fine, but sometimes his muscles cramp up and he's in dire pain and cannot continue to move around.
People in my very small town all know him. And he refuses to stay indoors or move around in a scoot-mobile.
So when he's in the city center and he cramps up. It's like a well executed rehearsal
The local store employees come outside with a pillow and blanket. We lay him on his back and apply pressure to his neck/lowerback it has something to do with the nerves endings. After a couple of minutes applying pressure (usually a couple of people are required) the episode of pain and immobility stops, and he can continue his daily routine.
And this has been going on for years. Every single time everyone does it with love and understanding.
It still moves me. Seeing all those locals working together for him to make his life more bearable.
Enjoying his daily walks knowing he doesn't have to worry about not getting any help. We all pitch in.
(Oh and when it happens, the locals aren't just taking it easy walking towards him, nope they all know he's in much pain and they literally come running from each and every direction, usually scaring the crap out of tourists who think someone is dying of a heart attack or something)

Only in Canada can a high risk neighborhood 'sting' fail because people were too fucking nice. I love my country. Thank you Sgt. Horsley for this wonderful story (and the great work you do).

What a great video! When my wife and I visited Vancouver years ago, we "accidentally" walked through the East Side. Because of the stories I had heard, I was terrified for our safety. I'm glad to see that my fears were unfounded and prejudiced. Thank you for posting this video. It is good to hear "good" stories coming out of Vancouver East Side.

Shannon Ferguson I walk through the DTES all of the time at all hours of the day/night and, as a man (I can't speak for women), it's a very safe place to be, relatively. If you are confident and treat people with respect, you will be respected.

Let's be honest... even here in Canada this is still pretty top notch.
The video shows the people who stopped, not the hundreds that walked by without making eye contact. It's great to see people step up in the community and help those they perceive in need.

Wow, I am so very proud of my city, I work with the homeless , run a shelter at first Baptist Church Vancouver, I have seen this kindness between Street folk or as we like to call them our Guests. I know I could write on and on about this, but I will end with a very strong Well Done to Staff Sergeant Mark Horsley, and a Quote from Bono ," The world Needs More Canada" I Love this country. We are more than rockets red glare, we are more then Bombs Bursting in air, we are residents of the true north Strong and Free. And as proven by the great people of Vancouver , we Stand on Guard for Thee !

I was deeply touched by this undercover operation - and by the wonderful, sensitive and caring people who stopped to ask and share their love and compassion...Yes, we do have angels among us - and yes, we do appreciate the many police actions put in place to help us, the public....We applaud our POLICE DEPARTMENTS AND THE COMMUNITIES THEY SERVE AND PROTECT! Thank you!!

Great video, thanks for putting it on TH-cam for all to see.
I'm not surprised though. Though some may not have a lot by the standards of others but they still care about others and their neighborhood. I'm down in that area every week making deliveries and see a lot of what was shown in the video.
    Stay safe and always smile.

Great video. I think maybe the cop is a BETTER cop for the experience. It is very easy to get jaded when dealing with the underbelly of humanity. I think that's why you see so many cops coaching youth sports and the like. It allows them to stay in touch with regular people and not get disillusioned with humanity. I'm from a whole lot of miles south of you Canadians, but this applies everywhere. Kudos to the cop for sharing.

Awesome video shows how one of Canada's poorest postal code locations, is also good natured and looks out for the vulnerable that are within the area too. this helps to see that just because they are poor that they would not steal from someone else who is poor, good morals of marginalized citizens :-) cheers

I'm a transit operator and you are right, there is a greater sense of community in the DTES than any other area of Vancouver. There have been instances of when a DTES resident will stick up and protect an operator.
My only wish is for dtes residents to stop littering.

It's the few evil self serving that create a world of fear and negativity either in words or deeds. It is up to each of us to Look in the Mirror as well. Good video

This is an incredibly important message! If only..or perhaps, when the time comes when police see the people who put them in charge, are mostly good solid citizens, the relationship between cops and citizens will change and be healthy. As long as it is "Us against them" there will be strife and negativity. Everyone is tying to get by and do their best. When we realize this, we all get along a lot better.
