Nor is their strength or danger level, as even monsters that are said to be supremely dangerous like Seregios still fit the Flying Wyvern class and thus are categorized as one, or Shen gaoren who can take a Lao Shan Lung, still beeing a Carapaceon and not a Dragon. Everything that doesn't fit one of the established species is a dragon. The most obvious is as you said, four legs two wings means they are no wyverns. So they are dragons. But so is a giant flying squir or a Unicorn.

@Zorunima elder dragon translates to elder beast/ancient monster doe....But yeah, mainly elder dragons are put as elder dragons because thye don't fit in other categories/ can control weather and such, ie kirin, it's both- and yet is very week other than with it's thunder.
Unfortunately,if you don't have the Japanese update version you won't be able to ride:Teostra,Rajang and Kush. Daora! I'm from Europe too and I'm very disappointed I won't never ever ride these beasts...😭
@@Seajojo Don't forget Glavenus (it's only obtained by DLC in EU - you can only get its egg via collecting the shards through the "MHX" regulation PVP in Monster Hunter Stories - meanwhile you can hunt them in the wild and get their egg in the Japanese version)

Jacob Priddy nope there is a gene bingo system and basically there are elements and stuff water thunder fire etc. So this Rajang has water "genes" so it changes it's appearance in some way hence those blue horns and when he did the super the boulder was blue and covered in water.
@Daddy Feli they still have sub species. Tigerex has the Brute and Molten variants available to ride as an example. The gene bingo just lets you change their attributes essentially. You can make Rajang water attributed through gene bingo, but he will still learn lightning attacks as he levels up.
