He was so good because he never, ever outshone his guests. He respected them by being prepared and was truly interested in what they had to say ... because he learned something from each of them.
Urbane, humble and always a gentleman. He was a gift from England - not just for England but the world.
Rest in peace, dear man. And thank you for the many delightful years of interviews of the most interesting among us.

Those days are gone, when there hard working people who became celebrities, these days , just pop your boob or do a stupid job & these young ones think they’re celebrities.
I’ll end it by saying that Mr. Parkinson was a rare gem that you will not find ever again.
May Mr. Michael Parkinson RIP, with his parents. 🙏🙏🌹🇦🇺🇬🇧🥂

Because anyone with a smartphone and TH-cam access can be a "journalist" or "talk show host" and as many seem to do it for their fame, rather than an interest in OTHER people, interviewers such as Parkinson and Dick Cavett (whom I consider his American counterpart) are harder to find. There are some who can ask a question, then sit back and listen to the answer, formulating their next question from what's just been said to them, rather than from the list in their lap, NOT missing a scoop or great story because they WEREN'T rudely staring at that list as their guest dropped a bombshell, but they are few and far between. We were spoiled and we didn't know it.
Interviewing is an art. It doesn't just "happen", because you're a good talker. They're the worst interviewers, more interested in the sound of their own voices than their subjects! I'm probably rambling, but that's because I just saw another "interviewer" ask a question (with opinion included) then let the guest get a few sentences out, before interjecting (or rather, talking over till guest shut up) with an anecdote about herself, about how the guest's film reminded them about that time in their life when....

I’ve lived in Scotland for 23 yrs and now I’m moving back home to be there for surviving family members.
I’m a mess internally through the thought that some of the people I’ve met have turned out to be some of the worst I’ve met.
But some have shown me what it means to be a true friend and supported me through my years here, of the loss of my mother in 2003, and my father in 2021 …. My marriage in 2015 through an uncaring partner.

for me the very best "talk show host" ever.
So be "read up" - so well prepared!!
    So positively engaged.
So relaxed, so mentally present for those he met.
And his ability to be constructive, creative and completely trustworthy at all times!! surprised (and perhaps not always forewarned, but still - his human factor made everything very easy!) at what "emerged" from his interviewees (a bit rudely - from his guests - who, despite everything, were the most important!).
And - most importantly! - he was NOT tempted to take the main role.

All the BBC now has are a group of woke indoctrinated people with no sense of humour. You can only laugh if the joke includes enough four letter words beginning with F & ending in K & heaven help you if you believe there are only two sexes...male & female. That is why they are incapable of making decent programmes that real people actually want to watch.

Another lover of Yorkshire (in fact he reminds me very much of my grandfather) and just taking a trip down memory lane and to see all the celebrities in the audience now looking a teeny bit older and being reminded of my husband & my own first feelings on landing in Australia by a fellow countryman. What an extraordinary nights viewing.

I always watched Michael Parkinson’s on a Saturday night in the uk. Had fabulous guest on. I remember Bill’s first time. Rod Hull & Emu. Bett Davis , when she was allowed to smoke. So many over the years.

Life bounces along with nil consideration for the person doing said life. Teens are so long you beg for age, Twenties last shorter than a great weekend, and every day past 30 amalgamates simply into experience. A second looking back seems like a movie. We don't realise how fast it all passes, until the time we realise, and then it's been! Age in the digital time shows us every second of The World. Eyes, mind and memory can only be the personal touch. I was there that day - will slip away, unfortunately. Long winded way of saying, Parky captured my life!

    • @BabyFaceBren
      @BabyFaceBren  ปีที่แล้ว +2

And when people like Parky, at one time just another TV talking head who helped us pass several hours of our youth 50 years ago, is suddenly gone, we may be surprised we are so sad, but with each famous name that goes, Parkinson, Barry Humphries, Treat Williams, Tina Turner, et al, we think of good times long ago, of youth that cannot be recaptured and we are reminded that our end draws ever near.
