"Bringing in person TTRPG into the VTT space by playing for fun first!"
This is a channel for the discussion of rules lite to "rules medium" TTRPG games of multiple genres. I promote a "rulings over rules" style of GMing that enjoys homebrewing and being creative yet promotes 3rd party creators and artists. I feel I have a somewhat unique way of looking at TTRPGs and hope to create a community of people who will enjoy what I can offer for advice, tips, tricks, and just plain fun in gaming.
My end goal is to foster a community of people who enjoy a more laid back approach to TTRPGs where fun is at the center!
If any of that sounds good to you and you like the "rule of Cool" and/or "rule 0" then you are in the right place, stop in and see what you think!

Yo Motley great video! I’ve never heard of this one! Ty for sharing
Check this one out man, a real gem!
Great review!! Really hope more people get to know about this fantastic game. Videos like this really help. Well done!!
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
very cool looking guide book. Mine isnt as pro looking as this one but it works for now. maybe one day.... cheers keep em rollin
Thanks for watching!!
GRIT is definitely one of my favorite rules light systems, it really pares things down to the essentials, so you can focus on the roleplay and not stewing over rules considerations. ❤
Perfectly said!
If you have the previous edition (3rd), maybe a video showing the changes between it and this 4th edition? Love 3rd edition, but not sure if I need 4th for my table. 🤔🤓
basicfantasy.org/blog/ Basically, there are some new monsters and artwork. Any reference to OGL material has been taken out and the game has dropped the OGL for the Creative Commons license. You technically don't have to get it to play, but some of the new art and monsters might make it worth it. Hardcover is only $16!
Love the topic. Fun first for the win! I got a question. How are you liking the Letters from the dark Boarder lands? I have never played or ran anything “boarderlands” but it is def on my list of games to run one day. I’ll be picking up Shadowdark next year with the new kickstarter and this piqued my interest!
Overall I like the zine! I haven't used any of it yet but good stuff, well organized, and fun. It's on DriveThruRPG, I might get more in the series.
Best intro in the game!!!
I thank you, good sir!
good vid sir
@@swordsnstones Thanks!!
Yo thank you for the shout out, that was so kind of you! Cool video! For players I recommend thinking “what would this character do” and not “what do I feel like doing.” They can also try accents or changing your voice a little bit. Another good tip is adding gestures. Maybe before you charter speaks to someone they comb their hair or brush their shirt for example. You can give the character a nervous tic, maybe they sweat when taking to nobles, or they are self conscious because they survived a burn and are left with a big scar on their leg. These are all just examples of adding different elements to the game. I call them quirks. Quirks are good because they give the GM something to go off of. In the above example I can have a noble who was robbed and is looking for a ring. He storms up to the party and demands they empty their bags. The “sweaty when talking to nobles quirk” kicks in and the player roll plays being nervous and the noble only gets more suspicious. 😂 😅 maybe you can convince this noble it wasn’t you, or maybe they throw you in prison. Maybe you are appointed the job of finding the ring in 1d4 days or the noble takes his vengeance on you.
Little quirks can be fun. Personally I find focusing on what’s important to a character, and how they make decisions contributes a lot more to in depth roleplay. As a GM, if you can find situations where your characters goals and their values are at odds, those will lead to some hard hitting moments
Actually, quirks and flaws will be a video of their own. I like the idea of gestures as a quirk though! Thanks for stopping through!!
Great intro video, happy to follow this channel!
Thanks for checking me out, glad to have you on board!
Been looking at Cairn lately. I missed the kickstarter and am looking forward to the complete release of 2e.
I know this is a month old, but seeing the Tome of Adventure Design I wanted to call out that Matt Finch is working on the Tome of Worldbuilding. It successfully funded on Kickstarter on October 15.
I didn't know that. I admit that I will probably buy it when available!
Thanks for this. Love all the Shadowdark! Edit: Flex that premium cover! It looks great!
Thanks!🤘
I swear my shelf is full of table tops that i've bought but never play: Pathfinder, Goblin slayer, D&D 5e, basic Fantasy, konosuba, cyberpunk 2020, and Cyberpunk RED
I feel your struggle!
Found you via the Shadowdark Discord. Great video - looking forward to more!
Thanks for checking me out!
Does anybody know if there's an online community to play Basic Fantasy RPG? I would like to join a weekly session from Hungary.
I can't stand pets in TTRPGs.
So in love with ShadowDark RPG!
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@TheMotleyGM-ij6rq I was inspired by you to post my first video! Keep up the good work
Free League is amazing for this!
@@fergclan5898 Facts! They just may be on the list!
Alex T's games over at Blackoath are worth checking out.
Listening to the criteria for being included for this list Basic Fantasy RPG is the first game that jumps to my mind. BFRPG may be the game you feature next, but if not, I still think it's worth looking at if non corporate, well supported and a friendly accessible community is desired. Cheers!
Awesome recommendation! BFRPG is on the other list, I believe it's the first. th-cam.com/play/PLWfg6FM4CsmBVh-2pmLokkH9wBqa_H0qh.html&si=FM1eSIAwbBaNBi6r

@@seanfsmith Thank you! Much appreciated!!
As I was watching this my wife came in after listening wife was drawn to Whitebox on screen, I then went to my shelf and handed her the book. I used it when we played online a year back, I say this to just point out how all old school "D&D" is interchangeable You make a lot of terrain on the cheap.
You may also want to check True-D6 on drivethrurpg
Have both of these, but have only dabbled into Cairn. Gonna try White Box next.
@@TabletopWanderer Both are awesome! Let me know your thoughts on Whitebox
@@TheMotleyGM-ij6rq will do!
Whitebox FMAG is an insanely good game regardless of its price. It's one of my top games. Cairn variants like Dodge Block Parry and Monolith and Cyber are great! Again, regardless of price these are epic games to have.
@@garaleos Cyber seems interesting. Need to check that one out closer. Great choices!!
Joining a patreon could be a great deal. For example JP Coovert has a tier of $6 a month and signing up for even one month gives you access to tons of games and adventures he has designed! I would look for designers like these that give you access to their catalog! Another is one page dungeon. It’s a yearly competition and the entries are complied and sold for $5. You get dozens of one page adventures to try or be inspired by. Each year is a different theme, so you could get the one that matches you best.
@@RPG_Bliss Nice tip!
This is the way. Frugal gaming is possible and honestly, it kind of rules. There's something awesome about people sharing their creations and sharing the fun with the community.
Hell yeah!!
Great video. Loved the setup. Your questions were really great. I think some tangible example answers from your own lores or favorite lores would have been a really cool addition to show how the answers to those questions operate in complete worlds. Looking forward to more worldbuilding videos!
🤔 That just may be a future video. Thanks for watching and for your input!!
You got a thumbs just for the Spyderco in the thumbnail!
@@matthewhelmers1426 They are pretty sweet! Have any?
@@TheMotleyGM-ij6rq there are at least 4 floating around that I can think of quickly. Old Endura, stainless man bug, new endura, grain ladybug. Not enough by a long shot!
@@matthewhelmers1426 You're right, 4 is not enough! Ever hold a Para 3? If not I recommend that you do! Might fill a good "in between" size in your collection. Also, compression lock goodness!
I really enjoy your videos, keep the good work!
@@jonathanthekangaroojoestar4393 Thanks! I will certainly try
Love the video, as always! Recently I’ve had a lot of fun starting with a biome and taking influence from real world people and cultures that exist in that type of landscape from across the world. In the most recent instance I set the region in a temperate rainforest and took inspiration from both the Hoh Rainforest in Washington, USA as well as Yakushima Island, Japan.
@kevadii Awesome idea. Good example of one way to apply what I was talking about, well done!
Cool video and talk. I’d love to have seen the inside of those books!
They should get showcases down the road! Thanks for the input!
You’re not my dad
😅
@@PichulRixth You're not wrong! 😂
Oh I saw the little thing about racism you skipped over really fast. Then apologizing about a damn fantasy game😂😂😂. Just because they even put that in the book I will not get this. I do not deal with dumb woke shit period! And even in real life different human races are better at things then other. For example all great strength athletes are white and all of them best sprinters are black and Asians are some of the smartest people in the world. Sorry it’s just how it is and it’s not a bad thing. I mean middle easterners are really good at building bombs and that’s pretty cool and kinda scary but there you go😂😂😂😂😂
The brand of D&D is ubiquitous in popular culture and hence an easy reference for the unfamiliar layman/potential rpg player. It can get an people to explore ttrpgs without too much of a stretch in their imaginations to explore what the exactly they are getting themselves into. I guess whatever makes people happy. But you are right, in that other games should be potentially explored. But I think with a seasoned gaming group it will be a lot more easier.
I only wish I knew where to find an Origins supplement print-on-demand book.
I have searched far and wide my friend but alas...I have found no such treasure!
☮
A video game reference example would be Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Exotic world, creatures, customs, organisations, languages, races and lore.
Oh my goch, Morrowind is one of my favorite RPG video games, mostly because of the world creation! Great call!!
I believe that it all depends on what level of complexity and direction you wish to create for your game. Specifically, whether your choose to have a one-shot, a limited number of sessions, or a campaign spanning anything from short, medium to lengthy or even open-world, then all of this dictates how you will procede. It is a lot of work to plan out the minutiae of a game world and prepare the layout for the players. In that time, competing processes of planning for map layouts, dungeon designs, npcs, villians, monsters, and story directions as well as preparing schedulign can get overwhelming, to say the least. The demands of life, whether you have a family, studies, a job, extracurricular activities, other commitments etc will dictate your priorities in time allocation towards game preparation. Anecdotally, I struggled to devote too much time to world building like I used to. When players don't even go in the general direction or tap into what you want then how fun can it be to devote so much time towards developing a fully-fleshed world subject every evocative fantasy that we can think of. I now lean more upon a philosophy of minimalism with a general layout and knoweldge that can be expanded upon as needed. Subjective, I know.
Great points, some of which will be in a follow up video I am planning!
Please keep your hands still or failing that, out of frame. Very distracting.
Ok, I have to ask. What is that lovely knife? (Just saw the Boker info above transcripts)
Old Skull also has 'Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells' and Dark Streets & Darker Secrets. I am also a fan of Swords & Wizardry by Matt Finch, which is an excellent Retroclone. The diversity of OSR game genres and the simplicity of rules make it so attractive. I am sure you would agree that OSR has great creative ideas.
Agreed! I love the OSR and shamelessly promote it! Thanks!!
What CRKT knife is that?
Brian Tighe BT Fighter Compact Flipper, it is discontinued now unfortunately
Rule of Cool/Rulings over Rules, is the way to go! The older we get the less time we have for tedious arguments and reference checks to rules bloat games.
Nail on the head my friend!
I have owned Basic Fantasy for a while but it is on my list yet to play. I am more of an OSR bibliophile.
A bit of a bibliophile myself1
I find knowing the NPC's motivation and stakes are really helpful, even when it isn't a Villain. I think of these as the "Ask" and the "Offer". Example 1, the party is approached by someone who is Asking for some specific assistance, and the are willing to Offer something in return. Example 2, the party encounters some bruiser who is watching a gate. He was asked to watch the gate by another, so he wants the party to leave, but doesn't necessarily want to fight them; his willingness to let them in, is driven (at least in part) by his stakes, which is to say, what he thinks he gets (or doesn't lose) for doing the job well.
Those are some good examples! Motivations will actually be its own video, you are on the right track though
Thanks for this list. If you haven't already covered it, for solo play, I'd recommend Dark City Games: Legends of the Ancient World. There's a lot of adventures, there. And, once you've learned the rules, it makes a great rules-light system to homebrew campaigns from. It's a similar to Steve Jackson Games' The Fantasy Trip. But, a lighter version.
I am not too much into solo play but I will check that game out!
White Box: FMAG is my go-to for how simple it is and how easy it is to homebrew new rules for. It's also nice having something streamlined that's fairly close to the original D&D as-is.
