THE WALK AND TALK SHOT
We all know the walk and talk. It has become a staple of film and TV, and the butt of a plethora of jokes. But what is it about the walk and talk that filmmakers love so much? And what makes a good walk and talk good? We’ll answer all those questions and more in this video.
WALK AND TALK METHODS
Walk and talk shots can vary in style. Shot size can range from wide shots, capturing the characters and their surroundings, to medium shots that focus more on the characters while still providing some context, and close-ups that highlight facial expressions and emotions.
Camera angle is another crucial aspect; low angles can create a sense of power or urgency, while high angles may imply vulnerability or insignificance. Camera movement adds fluidity and can follow the characters, move with them smoothly, or provide a handheld, shaky effect for more intensity.
WALK & TALK BLOCKING
Effective blocking and staging are crucial for successful walk and talk scenes. Blocking involves planning where actors will move and interact within the space, ensuring their actions appear natural and purposeful.
In walk and talk shots, the camera often moves with the actors, requiring precise coordination to maintain focus and composition. This synchronization between actors' movements and camera work is crucial for maintaining the scene's rhythm and ensuring the dialogue flows seamlessly. But the camera can also be stationary, adding an entirely different feel to the scene.
WHY USE A WALK AND TALK
Walk and talks serve many purposes. They add dynamism to exposition, making otherwise dramatically static scenes more engaging. They also convey urgency, as characters often discuss pressing matters while moving through spaces.
Walk and talks also immerse the audience in the environment, providing context and background information organically. They can create a continuous sense of movement and progression in the story, keeping viewers engaged and invested in the characters’ journey. It’s no wonder why filmmakers return to the technique again and again.

Would love an episode on Continuity. How it’s achieved, why it’s necessary, how employed in a story, and how & why it can be broken. Sometimes the worst examples of Continuity are ‘time of day’ or ‘scene positioning’. At times this can be intentional. Other times poor Continuity can be forced on a production due to budgetary constraints or poor planning. And what are some Best Examples? Thanks❣️🙏🏼

@@StudioBinder The ‘time of day’ ones annoy me the most. Think shot-reverse-shot and the Sun is on the same cheek of each actor with each cut (physically impossible). Or when a scene is shot but then pickups end up being shot hours off of the original scene time. Or a scene that begins in overcast skies, suddenly experiences bright sunlight, only to resume with gray skies again. 🙄
Such inconsistencies are annoyingly obvious and can take the viewer out of the moment. But when there has been attention paid to scene continuity it can enhance the believability of the story.
Of course, there are the fun ones where a Starbucks coffee cup appears in a fantasy series. 😉 And the occasional set dressing or costume inconsistency. On the other hand, some continuity issues can ruin a budget if not watched carefully. Excited to see what you folks come up with. 🤗

One of the best applications of walk and talk I witnessed was in Tenet when Protagonist and Priya discuss about plutonium 241 while walking on Mumbai streets !!!

Once again, THANK YOU FOR A GREAT VIDEO!!! The way one can look at a walk and talk is how it con move a film. When you show two (or more) characters on a walk and talk, you can make it be a mild scene transition where the characters are moving from one scene to another. For example, a couple gets home from the grocery store, the husband takes out the bags, the wife is walking with the baby. They are both talking about dinner when they go from the driveway to the kitchen. Another method to consider is how you can use the walk and talk to lead the viewer into a scene along with the character. So, you have two soldiers moving through a building looking for the villain, they move through corridors and are set upon by enemy gunman. Again, you are putting the viewer in their shoes as they move through the scene to the next scene. Both versions help move a scene: too much time sitting at the table will make film stagnant, too much time moving around from place to place will be distracting and hard to follow. A combination of both is needed to tell the story right. I think this lesson can be combined more in-depth with camera movement and blocking. But that is for another lesson...THANK YOU AGAIN AND STAY SAFE!!!

The emphasis on setting up the shot, using the environment to reinforce the characters' conversation, and capturing realistic movements is super insightful. Please think about a video on how these are done. I'm a production sound recordist/boom operator, and walking backwards with a steadicam (or a boom) is a bit nerve-wracking. I have no idea how the shots in The West Wing or Goodfellows was done.
Thanks for remembering The West Wing! About 50% of the scenes in that show were of people walking through the White House corridors and talking 😂

3:24 “There’s a trail on top of this hill, don’t worry…it is a trail.” I’ve been there for these discussions. Safety first for a steady cam shot! I saw a camera operator almost fall off a stage capturing a scene. It’s the coolest, but a good guide with you is key 😂

Agreed! Gimbals are the way to go.
@@alfonta One of my very favorite subjects. As you know, operating a stedicam is an art, and takes lots of training and experience. You obviously hire one, and they don't come cheap.
HOWEVER...a lot of prosumer cameras have image stabilization, and of course gimbals are very popular. And a dolly, or even a wheelchair with the camera operator being pushed can work well.
The Blair Witch footage to me was very unwatchable.
@@TeddyRumble If somebody tried to do Blair witch today it would be highly criticized for being too shaky. Maybe to point where it didn't sell well.
But considering when it was made, it did fit into the concept of what it was supposed to be. Somebody's found vlog instead of a movie.
But since gimbals are now so common in people's vlogs the shakiness as authenticity wouldn't be effective.
7:57 I remember analysing this shot in my dubbing course about a year and a half ago, we were mainly focusing on reading their mouths and when to start syncing since they're are all blurry for the first half of the shot and you don't have to worry about the lipsync there

When you start paying attention to how many walk and talk scenes there are in movies.... You can't unsee it! 😅
Honestly! No matter the genre or budget, these shots are SUPER common.
there are cool walk-and-talk sequences in X-files. Especially in the first 3 seasons. The longest I counted is 45 seconds, maybe even up to 60 seconds. One camera and up to 360 degree turn. I don't know why everybody forgot about X-files.

All of my films pass this. It's actually very easy. Treat women as if they are normal, sane and intelligent humans.
Not to brag, but I made a short about a lesbian couple deciding whether to have a baby. Passed the test easily, and the 3 female actors liked the idea, execution, and the dialogue. The one male character had little screen time.

Would have liked to get more information about the intricacies of lighting a walk and talk as light is an essential part of filmmaking. I've seen banks of lights, trucks and other things employed in the process and it would have been nice to have a mention of that in relation.

Would you create some type of gofundme for the LucasFilm division of Disney? Their IP murder of Star Wars is getting pretty bad. I laughed out loud when Smilo Ren cranked Yord VPN's head off, and gave miniature fake blond girl padawan (jerky/jecky Idr) those 3 lazer sword aeration holes. Given the IMDB appearance list, it's not just a flesh wound for Jecky (found it: Jecki) because she only appears in 4 episodes, the same as Yord VPN... which bothers me because in the other bizarre entry into the end of fandom for SW was Ashokaka, and lazer swords (aka light sabers in the past when SW was an actual IP, not a Disney IP) were just flesh wounds that healed up in a day or two.
I did date a few chinese white ppl mixes and they were very very attractive to me, but that was before the ladies thought pink or blue or purple hair was worth the scalp pain of ammonia... oh well, those were the days when women weren't trying to be men, most of the time... you know the 20th century prior to the movie _Disclosure?_ which actually happened to me and I had to sue my grad school and I took my degree that should have been given to me that I earned, setting first use of emails in my 1994 lawsuit in any court in the US, setting up the ability of Wikileaks to make it impossible for our tyrants to say, "It wasn't me." I wish I had your guy's still enjoyment of what holly wood (the wood used by Druids to make their magic wands, and where I assert "movie magic" comes from being _very real_ to those guys... baphomet approves!) to the point I would look forward to the possibility of losing myself in some entertainment while the world is being brought to a close by our own unrestrained oligarchs cause: they no longer need us anymore (whah on me, I know).
