Delta Variant COVID, aka B.1.617.2, has been spreading across the globe. It will soon be the dominant form in the US.
    Is it more contagious?
Will the vaccines work against it?
Is it a deadlier disease with worse symptoms?

    ---------------------------------------------------------
In a study done in Scotland, published in The Lancet, researchers showed that the risk of being hospitalized with the COVID Delta variant is double that of the alpha variant. The covid delta variant has recently made its way to the US, constituting 10% of COVID cases. However, that figure doubles every two weeks, and it's only a matter of time before it becomes the dominant strain. It makes up about 25% of Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
In a study done in the UK from May 20 to June 7, the researchers, led by Steven Riley, looked at their data, which suggest that the covid delta variant is about 60% more transmissible than the alpha, which was the variant first identified in the UK, which was more contagious than the original strain that initially emerged from Wuhan. Furthermore, they showed a doubling time of 11 days with the delta variant and an estimated R (reproductive) number of 1.44. And those younger than age 50 were 2.5 times more likely to be infected than older people.
The data showed that the covid Delta variant's affinity for the ACE2 receptor was slightly better than the original Wuhan strain. One of the delta's mutations in its RBD allows for this. The virus uses its spike protein to bind to the ACE2 receptor in the body. It's the key in the lock analogy. The virus then fuses with the cell membrane. This process relies on cleavage. Meaning enzymes on the cell membrane cut the spike protein at two different sites, triggering the cell to engulf the virus. A second delta mutation is in one of these cleavage sites. Better cleavage, better reproduction.
Another takeaway from this study is that the authors concluded that the neutralization of both viruses is reduced compared with the original Wuhan strains. Still, there is no evidence of widespread antibody escape. However, they said the data did suggest that those previously infected with COVID may be more susceptible to reinfection by the new delta variant. Also, monoclonal antibody treatments are ineffective at treating the delta variant.
The big concern is "vaccine escape," meaning that the current vaccines will become far less effective as the virus evolves. So far, it hasn't happened, but eventually, we will need new covid vaccines for the variants, likely a yearly thing. The good news? Covid Vaccines are still protective against the Delta variant. According to research released by Public Health England: For the Pfizer vaccine, after both doses, it was 88% effective in preventing symptomatic disease, 96% effective at preventing hospitalization. The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine was 92% effective at preventing hospitalization if they had both shots. If you only get one shot of either of these covid vaccines, the effectiveness is pretty low, around 30-40%. More studies will soon be available regarding the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

Cause there's different individuals or whatever they're called within the variant. As in one case of delta escaped quarantine in Melbourne Australia & spend a week in the community & infected only 9 people, with no controls in place. A different individual of delta escaped in Sydney & caused 10 infections at just a single party.
Same variant, but different individuals within it can be very different. The one in Sydney is really aggressive, while the Melbourne one was not. Symptoms are likely the same thing. With previous variants we've seen this with some individuals cause asymptomatic infections for a number of generations & even if they manage to cause symptoms somewhere down the line, they tend to be very mild, while others tend to be super aggressive & cause serious illness & death to whole families.
It's like comparing forest gump to U. Bolt in running. Both are humans of the same variant, but there's a HUGE difference in individual performance.
Testing detection ratios also impacts on what percentage of cases appear to need hospitalisation

The more a virus spreads to people/animals, the more likely it would mutate, that’s why doctors were obsessed with “controlling” the spread. Normally, normal viruses do so. Their aim is to replicate and infect more hosts and not to kill them. Thats their genetic drive. Thats how a virus-through mutations- gets calmer and calmer and it becomes endemic, without much issues. Thats how I learned back in uni. But everything I learned back then were thrown out in the garbage bin in the last year. Covid is a really funny and unique, virological knowledge-resistant "virus".

Dear Dr Mike, I dont know if you will notice my post, but I don't use Twitter to ask you there. It is a pharmaceutical question. I noticed that all drug commercials have two names - one for the market and one scientific? At first, I thought that marketing name is made easier for people to pronounce but it is not always the case. Is this about patents, permits, trade marking. I will do the research - hoping though, that you may know already. I love your channel and your wonderful ability to talk about complex medical issues in a very interesting, always professional way. Greetings from Canada!

@@rockmetalband Yes I take Vitamin D and Zinc. Sunshine is better than Vitamin D pills. The virus is carried by bats that are black and fly at night. The virus is effected by sun light, it has to do with melanin in the skin. Closing beaches and parks is aggressive politics and bad medicine. Social distancing and preventing the spread of the virus with good masks makes sense. Open air is safer than enclosed places.
      Zinc strengthens the immune system.
Apparently Ivermectin blocks the receptors so it is not limited to a keying mechanism. This greatly reduces the contagious period of the infected patient. It is a double winner and offers an effective treatment at low cost that can deal with the many variants.

I am a 50 year old man from Singapore. Fully vaccinated , 3 doses completed in March 2021. Mid October2021 during the delta wave…. I had a runny nose. No fever no aches . Nothing besides a runny nose. The art test was positive. The symptoms subsided that night and the art was negative the next morning.
Super mild infection. I attribute this to the vaccine as well as my super healthy lifestyle. I eat oatmeal daily . 3 fruits a day with veggies. Beans regularly. Lean meat daily. I exercise 4 x a week and get sunlight. I am self employed and so I control my hours and have minimal stress.

I'm on day 11 of being on the delta Variant and I'm fully vaccinated... By day four I thought I had a cold and it would be gone but by day 5 my symptoms became worse. I wasn't getting any better and my symptoms worsen through out the days. I never considered it to be this variant bc I did have my sense of smell and taste throughout this whole time.. I had headaches from the moment I woke up till I slept. I've had ALOT of phlegm come out and a cough that rattles my lungs. Before I got sick I worked out daily and ate clean..so a 3-5 mile walk would be a breezw in the park..now I'm out of breathe by the end of one block.😭
