The Bhutanese refugees primarily belong to the Lhotshampa ethnic group, who were expelled from Bhutan in the late 1980s and early 1990s due to political and ethnic persecution.
They arrived in Nepal in the early 1990s, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) established several refugee camps in the eastern part of Nepal, including the well-known Beldangi Refugee Camp.
The refugees lived in these camps for many years, relying on humanitarian aid for their basic needs such as food, shelter, and education.
From 2007 onwards, a large-scale resettlement program was initiated by the UNHCR in cooperation with various countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and several European nations. Over 100,000 Bhutanese refugees have been resettled in third countries, but some still remain in the camps or have integrated locally in Nepal.
These camps were established in the early 1990s to house Bhutanese refugees. The major camps were located in the Jhapa and Morang districts of eastern Nepal.
Beldangi Camps (I, II, III):
The Beldangi camps (Beldangi I, II, and III) were among the largest and most well-known camps for Bhutanese refugees. They provided basic facilities such as shelter, education, and healthcare, supported primarily by the UNHCR and various NGOs. Over the years, many residents of these camps have been resettled in third countries.
Pathari Sanischare Camp:
Another significant camp for Bhutanese refugees, Sanischare also provided essential services to its inhabitants. Like the Beldangi camps, it has seen a significant number of its residents resettled abroad.
Timai Camp:
Timai was another major camp that housed Bhutanese refugees. It faced similar conditions and resettlement efforts as the other camps in the region.
Goldhap Camp:
This camp was smaller compared to Beldangi but still played a crucial role in providing refuge to Bhutanese exiles.
Khudunabari Camp:
Khudunabari was one of the original camps established for Bhutanese refugees. Like the others, it provided basic necessities and education to its residents.
