I realize that books like this aren''t necessarily aimed at turning readers into vegetarians or vegans, but i'm also simultaneously perplexed at how the author might think that "eating less" meat is in any a solution to the problem (if that is in fact what she's saying). Wouldn't the only solution to the problem to be familiarize yourself on the subject, and then choose to completely eliminate the products that come from behavior that you think is grossly unethical? That's what I tried to do, but was really unable to find where those lines were, which is what ended up with me coming to the ultimate conclusion that the only ethical choice (at least if you think that animals have human-like emotions like pain, fear, love, sympathy, fairness, etc) is to abstain from any and all animal products together. But every day, I weigh this up against the realization that we seem to be the only animals that feel some sort of guilt about consuming other animals. Needless to say, it's a psychologically and philosophically fascinating topic.

What I eat has become a point of personal contention with me this last year. Will definitely check this one out. Thanks.

Loved this review and am now planning to buy the book. Just one thing I'd like to mention: meat production is not that ethical in most of Europe either. It might be worse in the US, but we are far from having an ethical meat process and we also do not eat most of the animal's parts...

Hey Cliff, love the show, love what your doing but would you be able to slow down a little bit. I loved some of your older videos where it was super chilled out and made me feel relaxed as you spent five seconds taking a sip of coffee in between searching for quotes in the books. This video is freaking me out, man! too many jump cuts between what you're saying! Just my personal input, I will watch regardless. Just an observation. Keep doing what you're doing!

For anyone interested in learning more about how messed up the food industry is in the world nowadays, I recommend the book "The End of Food" by Paul Roberts. Its a scientific book, it has no philosophical incursions, but I found it an interesting read.

I'm literally about to reread the Hannibal Lecter series, this will probably be next. I've been thinking about going vegan for a while, my main motivating factor is the impact factory farming has on the environment. Especially with climate change becoming more and more of an issue. I think we in the developed Nations should probably take more responsibility for what's going on not only because we're more responsible but because we can. People in developing world struggle everyday just to get food with adequate nutrition. In rich countries we can get anything whether it's in season or not. That being said I certainly don't think poorly of those who choose to eat meat, as a species we evolved to do so. I just find that personally it's inconsistent with my own values.

How about reading Peter Singer's Animal Liberation: A New Ethics for Our Treatment of Animals, to get a deeper understanding about how indoctrinated we actually are regarding to viewing some animals as "food" while we care and love others. Pigs are basically dogs, only smarter. I cant believe I actually once ate their flesh and supported the ongoing genocide of animals (60 billion land animals per year!). Try to have an open mind guys, cheers.

Hi, just wondered if you ever thought of reviewing any William Burroughs? Sorry if you already have, I haven't seen it! The Red Night Trilogy is my favourite collection of novels. An acquired taste certainly, but utterly brilliant if you can connect with his style. Thanks for the continuing quality of your work.

Great vid, as always. I'd like to hear your thoughts on an oldie but goodie... Robert Coover's "The Public Burning." I think there's some contemporary relevance and it's a masterclass in craft, form, and creativity. Just a thought...Keep up the good work. Cheers, mate!

Oh, yeah. Just remembered. Read this awhile back. Might be a short primer if you haven't checked Coover's book out yet.

Man, I really want to steal the anecdote about you and your brother smashing the pig skull to throw it out. It'd make such a good black comedy scene.

I’m 14 and wondering if I’m too young to read Lolita or something like The Shining? I watch a lot of rated R films and just started getting into books but I don’t know if books are more graphic and harder to understand over film.

Don't ask other people if you're ready for a particular book. If you do, you'll always be able to find someone to tell you you're not ready. Just jump in and get your feet wet. That's how you find things that you love.
