I remember in your review of _On The Road_ you really liked the descriptions/depictions of jazz being played. How do the descriptions/depictions in Baker's book compare.
My favorite Jazz musician is Theloniuos Monk.

Joe Henderson - 'So Near, So Far' - stupendous album.

If you like Bix listen to Sidney Bechet. I used to love my granddads stories of seeing him live, by accident, in a smokey bar in Paris while on national service. Beautiful music.

I love my free jazz, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, definitely check out Ayler's version of Summer Time and Spirits Rejoice, one of the most heart wrenching players of any instrument. But obviously Miles and Trane are something else

Jimmy Giuffre. Been listening since I was in utero . Miles, not only the classic quartets but also the electric stuff during the last few years of his life (with Kenny Garrett, Mike Stern).

Bill Evans and Monk- the best. Just hearing Bill Evans progression through his life gives you chills- check out the difference between Nardis on Explorations and the Aug 30th recording of Nardis on the Last Waltz.

Definitely need to pick this one up. I've got to say, NYRB Books is really on the ball bringing back interesting but neglected works. Have you read Nightmare Alley? I believe it's also published by them. I had an old paperback. You might call it carnival noir. Made into a great film with Tyrone Power. I also recommend Fancies and Goodnights, a collection of satirical fantasies in the Roald Dahl vein by John Collier. Also reprinted by NYRB, I believe. Love your show!

I can name too many jazz musicians, Thelonious is definitely my favorite musician overall, Bix Beiderbecke is the most enjoyable "hot" jazz player, Dexter Gordon is my favorite vintage sax player, Chet Baker my favorite singer and his improvisations (on trumpet) are sad and beautiful, Duke has that something that I never get tired of and is also my 2nd favorite composer after Thelonious and I'll leave it at that, I don't want to write more. History of Jazz by Ted Gioia is a great book to read while listening the songs he puts as examples, every song listed there is here on youtube, even the very old ones, made the very long read that much better.

I love Coltrane when he's not going *too* crazy. Pure spiritual beauty paired with technical mastery. I also really love Joshua Coleman -- he can play the hell out of a horn and you can hear how much fun he has doing it. His St Thomas is a famous.

As always...better than many reviewers. You made me check out House of Leaves and God! What a ride that was. Don't know much about Jazz in book form but I'll definitely check this out. Thanks.

Almost forgot to mention that Coltrane is my main man. But I have learned to love the earlier jazz of the twenties and thirties. Bix, Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti, Louis Armstrong. It's not corny, it's timeless.

My favorite jazz musician, or at least my favorite jazz guitarist, would probably be Grant Green.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Baker's Keyboard Lounge. Established in 1934, it claims to be the worlds oldest jazz club of its type. Was there in the 70's. Not sure what it's like now.

... I come from the classical side of things, and I promise you that a musician who can't improvise or compose is useless. Imagine reciting a dramatic monologue with perfect diction and not understanding a thing.
McCoy Tyner's great. Also love this album [Kurylewicz/Stanko]: th-cam.com/video/KVHQRJbRj2I/w-d-xo.html It's only trumpet and piano. Oh, and you might recall Stanko as the trumpet player from the early Polanski films [Knife in the water, Rosemary's Baby, etc]

There are two very different books I recommend. The Strange Death of Europe and Everybody Lies. These are two very well written books and I came accross your channel because of a similar book you and Douglas talk about with Submission.

You said Whiplash was one of the last new films you thought was really solid. Did you watch You Were Never Really Here? The best thing I've seen come out in years.
