Met Alex Elmsley back in 74 in London England . He was a member of the Magic Circle. Awesome cardman. He developed a lot of card sleights in use today.
80 year old hands are dry, arthritic, and develop a slight (or extreme ) shake...return to this page when You are 80+ years and see if you can appreciate the performance, I'll only be able to DROOL on my cards!
Man, if he did nothing beside his "count" he is among the greatest in the what he left category. Double lift, pass (or not even, any invisible control should be there), and Elmsley count are the very top of sleights. Simple, yet powerfull. And so, SO damn usefull in a million different tricks and routines Thank you Mr. Alex.
Nope just using the Elmsley Count method... here's the real magic, enjoy! th-cam.com/video/Btz2gYnu3fc/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/Z_aytQGh6xM/w-d-xo.html
Watch closely how he deals. There are only 2 cards of each kind and he flips the bottom one each time he turns the deck over.

Before you give him crap for not being clean, remember how old he was. He was born in 1929. Most people his age would have trouble drinking water without spilling it.
Clean? Forget that, I still don't know how he does it! I've been doing card magic for years and I can't figure out how he ended it with 5 jokers. I have a few ideas, but no definite answer.
Its not clean but not enough for most people to notice and the patter is so good it really doesn't matter. Repeating the effect so many times in a way is inviting the audience to figure it out which I like.
if you read the collected works of alex elmsley book one, you will learn that the eric de la mare count inspired the ghost count...but is quite different !
@Hwmeatcutter fail on the biddle grip?i thought it was the best packet performance trick ever.making those moves that every magician in the world uses.if your a magician, than you should respect anything you see him perform.
And with you deathblooms1111, layman are seeing 4 backs and one face every time. Actually I just watched this video for the first time and that's what I saw.
BTW death, you seem to appreciate the talent of the "veterans" magicians, it really worry me that tons of young people just listen about sleights of D. Miller or D&D, I mean, sleights are important, but some of them don't care about other extremely important things. Anyway I wanted to share this video w/you, I think you'll like it: /watch?v=te-hmawIyAU
There is actually something bad at this effect, he finishes by counting and showing 5 jokers at the end (1 came from pocket) so he manipulated 5 cards at 4+1 that always add it from pocket. But the cards that have changed color and shows them are 2. I mean we only see 2 backs in every routine that changed not all 5 that he has. (an average eye maybe cant realize that).
I agree. Who counts cards like that now? It's one of the most un-natural ways to count cards. I have the utmost respect for Alex Elmsley, and I'm sure he would have some amusing reply...
Are you questioning the Elmsley Count? Are you out of your mind? There are dozens of brilliant tricks using it, and spectators think they are witnessing miracles. But is not good enough for you? Get the fuck out!!

I am not questioning mr elmsley... just that with the refinements of today, the mechanics grip is a more confusing laymen method, as everyone knows the biddle grip version.. thus even noobs can figure out what he is doin
The cards he is using are probably not the best finish and condition for doing his count, he was also pretty old at this point as well. The other move employed to perform this trick aside from the count, he does almost imperceptibly. I hope I'm able to do as much when my hands are old and arthritic ☺
His voice is golden.
A real English gentleman :)
No Bill he is Scottish. Born in St. Andrews 1929.
Note has been taken, thanks for the correction sir. (sort of meant his manner of speech, but yes a great Scotsmen:)
The comedy that goes with this trick is gold
I'm gonna steal some of his jokes!
the real trick is how he knows which card with what cover he is going to pull out form his front pocket
aflashlight I know right! That's what I was thinking
he takes the first one every time , they are stacked accordingly

you can never beat the classics
I love the patter that he presents with this routine. Very funny. Nice to see a master at work.

The emperor of cards. Infinitely impressive
Unbeliavable trick and slick patter, and your left clean, can't get any better than that.
Elmsley was brilliant. The trick is great and his patter was great.
He's got a 3d printer up his sleeve...

Shit this dude has a count named after him. Probably one of the most used moves in packet tricks

Looked clean as a whistle to me. I’m fooled, and I like it.
I love watching elmsley do the elmsley count. Kinda cool
doesn't he just call it "count" ;-)
Absolutely beautiful by an absolute master.
This was natural, one of the best cadmen ever!!!!!
What a freaking great trick ! That was fun to watch one of the nicest effects I’ve seen”
Wonderful...
Beautiful
that looks like real magic!
....the trick is amazing bro chill out and just enjoy the video again.I watch this video all the time lol

that blew my mindddd holy crap
Amazing.. RIP MR Elmsley.
IT'S A TRICK!!!! LOL......very nice 👌
That's History!
Amazing
Excellent ! ☺️
One of my favorite tricks.
Couldn't agree more!!!
The Legend :)
I liked it, for his time he was very advanced.
Picks up two colour cards at a time. Leaves one on the table , and inverts the other
Yeah my favorite close up Magicians are Slydini, Goshman, and a few others.
(Bows down to a master thats was wonderful)
Where can I get that green deck? I love that design and color.
still is kept alive by those that honour it ;)

Is this published anywhere? I just have to learn this.
Yes in From "The Magic Of Alex Elmsley - The Tahoe Sessions vol.1"
as indicated below the video.
It is so English that now I have tea for dinner
the greatest weapoen of magic is elmsleys count
Wow...

"That's a trick so difficult, I can't do it."
are all his tricks with the elmsley count ????
could this be any more British?
+Nick Falletta He's Scottish
Beena Pillai Scotland is a part of Great Britain.
I saw no fish and chips, so yes
ITS GILES!!!!
Because it is performed by an old man, with no camera cuts nor effects and in one shot?
if im not mistaken, he said in one of his interviews that he stopped magic for a while, that is why his handling is rather shaky
envy its clean its real thats life. how about respecting a great video with showmanship
Call me a heretic, but I don't like Roy Walton's "Restless Colors" version, this version is more magical in its design.
nice hands!
Is he using friggin bridge sized cards or what? those look weird, or is that just me?
@hyjk100
I'm curious about that move too. There's a split second that looks suspiciously like a pass
And with you deathblooms1111, layman are seeing 4 backs and one face every time. Actually I just watched this video for the first time and that's what I saw.
pm me what you mean.also message me the right link to what you want me to watch thanks
sorry to say, but he flashed some cards there
BUT: great man!
Is this a marketed effect or, is it in a book or dvd? Anyone know? Thx.
The Elmsley Count is in every magic book, every DVD and used by every magician on Earth. You just watched Alex Esmley the inventor himself.
I meant this particular effect.
Gen Eric Read down this post, a few versions I believe

ahahah anyone who can reverse engineer this trick just by watching the performance alone is IMO-silver medalist material, at least
I didn't expect an IMO reference in THIS comment section...
i have some guesses, but i'd rather enjoy the trick
the original
@hyjk100 half pass with some count that i believe to be a jordan count but i can't be sure of it
Or maybe, just maybe it's the Elmsley count.

@wallaguest1 not very clean but damn.. i have no idea how he does it.. only a few guesses >

He uses the eric de la mere count.stay in school.
Mechanic grip count is much better than finger Amsley county count!
Dai Vernon said - be natural. This wasn't natural.
@hyjk100 half-passes, false counts, and a buttload of custom gimmicks
one tip.. its a gaff deck doubleface
Thats what else call sleight of hand.laymen have no idea what he is doing
Ugh he keeps putting them on the bottom, why does he keep saying middle?!
When you take the selected card, and control it to the top, how do you keep saying its ''lost'' in the deck?

Hey he used his move!!! I thought it would be better though. I have seen many people do it a lot more convincingly than this.

BS
Mindblowing (but it was a guitar, not a banjo).
Does it matter? Does it really matter...?
27AznBoy
I forgot to add ;-)
***** it has both a guitar and a banjo on it
i don't like it, its not very clean
elmsley count biddle grip is fail....mechanix grip is the way
Lol language....
WTF?
godamnit stop calling it the elmsley count its the eric de la mere count
i mean..respect to the man that invented the count. but that is one of the worst elmsley counts i think ive ever seen. shockingly bad.
That's because that isn't the traditional ECount. I think he is counting 4 as 5. Oh... and he is 80 years old!!
Everchange count
he technic is so horrible , very untalented it is clear he never practice but his performance kinda makes up for it Kinda
How embarrassing
