propane has about half of the energy density as gasoline (especially in USA)
@@LukaArtelj No it has 27% less energy. If it had half the energy. Then they wouldn’t run generators with it!
@@LukaArtelj It also has a longer run time and burns much cleaner. It also stores much longer!
Hank Hill let me know that you can also use propane for your propane grills & propane accessories!
What do you think about the power horse pressure washer from Northern tool for $299.99? It’s 2.6 gallons per minute & 3200 psi.
Steve: Under a load gasoline has more btu output to keep the generator running great under load. No load makes no difference to the rpm. Thanks for the video's.
@@GeeBee135 Bingo! Great explaination.
What he said ˄
Perfect explanation
Not only lower btu for propane vs. gas but it is also a slower burning fuel. This requires more ignition timing advance, leading to lower peak cylinder pressure which means lowered max output.
I always believed gas gives 20% less power (in the same engine) as petrol.
I can tell you I’m in Louisiana and I have the Westinghouse generator and it is getting g a workout. We probably won’t have power for another 3 days and this thing has been running nearly non stop for 2 days. Our damage is nothing compared to people further south. I just lost some trees. Definitely field testing this Westinghouse and so far it has done great.
Thanks for video,I just bought a WPX2700 today pressure washer today,$249.00 is normal price,Amazon is having a sell and I got it for $223.63 free shipping,I always watch vids on youtube, see how to fix things, and this guy will give you a honest opinion.
You're Welcome...
Hope you did the break in on it, I did 1 hour then 1 hour half load, then 1 hour full load, changing oil each time first oil change had a lot of metal particles in it normal for new engines, just get it out, I have the 12,500 Westinghouse DF, ran my whole house AC, refrigerators, freezers, everything, it didn't even hesitate, I think it's the best generator on the market. Thanks for your videos.
I’ve had that generator for about 3 years and it’s been a great one. I try to run it once a month. I would buy the pressure washer based on the generator.
Right on
That's been my experience as well. Just ordered the pressure washer.
Steve you give the best honest reviews. You tell the good, bad and in between no matter who gives you sponsored products. Love your channel.
I appreciate that!
I have the Westinghouse WGEN7500DF and I LOVE it! Over 3,800 reviews on Lowe’s and 5 stars. Great generator and works well with a 30A transfer switch!
Same here, but then after 7 years it just died. I didn't want to spend $$$ on repair because I have no way of loading into my car or unloading plus thought better to get a new one. Sold on FB Marketplace for $200, a bargain for some handy person. I just got the 9500 dual fuel and was looking around for how to put the wheels on and how to connect the feet etc. As a 79 year old girl, this is not over my head but not obvious so I need guidance. I never had even 1 problem with the 7500 gasoline gen.so I purchased this brand again.
I bought the 9500 watts Westinghouse. Still in process with my electrician since he's in COVID quarantine. Hope to have to ready soon.
Good luck!
I purchased this pressure washer very recently and finally got a chance to really use it today. (I bought it after doing some research and seeing that this washer had one of the highest number of positive reviews I'd ever seen.) After my first test a couple of days ago, I'd written to Westinghouse to ask about the motor stuttering momentarily if I let go of the trigger while it's running. I just wondered if that was normal. Then today I came across this video. Imagine my surprise when lo and behold you were using the washer and let go of the trigger and the engine stuttered for a moment. I loved the way you slowly looked at it as it did that, then gave the thumbs-up a few seconds later when the engine smoothed back out. Ha, I replied to Westinghouse and told them everything was okay and sent them a link to that exact point in your video! Thanks Steve... Miller time!
Right on buddy!
regarding the generator: Some important details that you did not mention: Is the output full wave? Is the output analog or stepped square wave? Can it handle having too large a current load?
What is the fuel burn, per hour, for propane? What is the fuel burn, per hour, for gasoline? What is the dba noise level?
the only generators without full wave output are inverter generators. this always spins at the same rpm, and always outputs the same voltage, thus no inverter needed, albeit for increased low load fuel usage.
All generators that produce electricity from a spinning generator will have a sine wave output. You're thinking of 12V to 120/240VAC inverters that produce modified square wave, which is really bad for electronics.
@@Voluntarists I had a champion 3500 watt generator that used square wave stepping for voltage production (I.E. it (sort of) looked like a sine wave output, but closer examination (on a scope) showed it was actually a series of square waves. The result was: it did not do well with certain motors on power equipment. This characteristic is typical of several low cost generators.
Therefore, I'm asking.
@@VictorSilva-rq4kz please read:
Which states:
"Standard, construction grade generators produce a stepped wave that will destroy anything that needs a clean sine wave. An Apex would be ruined in short order. Controllers for pumps, same story. Your microwave oven or computer won't run on one either.
Honda's i series have inverters, correcting the wave form to a true sinusoidal wave. Yamaha has there own series. I've owned both and they're excellent.
They're also much quieter and more efficient. The Honda I have now runs 4 hours before needing a refill. "
@@rkwill100 its not possible to produce a square wave if it isn't an inverter generator. The lowest cost of the low, budget chinese generator will have pure sine wave if it doesn't have an inverter. Non inverter generators spin at a fixed RPM regardless of load.
At the family orchard I have operated (and repaired) more pressure washers than I can remember or count. They all work just fine out of the gate. The real test comes after they have been used and abused by any number of employees who have zero concern whether the equipment functions or not. Or if the business can afford to replace the equipment with new stuff or just repair what's already paid for.
Yeah give the pressure washer and generator to a rental company for a year then test them and tear them down now that would be a review.
No wonder my apples look so clean. (-:
@@brianbartulis9709 Well how ya like them APPLES
I just bought this to replace the 7 year old 7500 that died. I did not want to invest in repair and so I bought a 9500 Dual Fuel. I was looking for a how to connect the legs and wheels but enjoyed your helpful video. I did not have a single time in 7 years that this would not start. I think though I overloaded the oil and it messed up the ability to start. Sold it on FB and ordered the next model. Hope the dual fuel does not present problems, normally I live by KISS, Keep it Simple, Stupid. I'm not stupid but I am a girl and at 79 just getting this out of the box with a utility knife was a big deal. wish me luck putting it together today!
You're the best sling blade on TH-cam Steve. Thanks for all you bring to the show.
Wow, thanks!
Hi Steve. Small engine problems and I found the great Saloon video to fix it. I think a great slogan for your next tee shirt would be "It's Never the Spark Plug!"
Thanks again
I just bought the pressure washer, but the 3400 model. Has not arrived yet, but I am looking forward to trying it.
Bought a IGen 4500 generator (gas only) for my travel trailer about 6 months ago. Put about 50 hours on it so far, and I love it. Have had no issues, since assembling it with for one exception. During assembly, they sometimes do not assember the auto choking feature and it will not work properly without it. There are numerous videos online that can show you how. It would start and smoke (because its on full choke) and then die. It took about 10 minutes to fix, but It was disappointing. I did overload it accidentally trying to run the AC, Electric water heater and microwave, without thinking. I just reset it and worked fine afterwards.
Looking forward to checking out the pressure washer.
Nice video Steve. I own a construction company and I bought a similar 2019 Westinghouse 9500 and love it. I bought a Generac 8000 a few months earlier for a similar price and needed another for another job and chose the Westinghouse based on looks, quality and features that ended up running circles around it.

Haven't watched the whole thing yet but it's awesome when a company just gives you something and lets you say what you want. Good on them for that

Pack up the gear and take her camping with the new generator
The output difference between fuels is based on the BTU rating of a fuel.
Natural gas versus LP/Propane give different outputs too.
I built industrial generators for many years for a company in WI. Different fuel types were an option which you had to take into consideration .
Love the generator, only problem I can see is I don't have it in my garage! Beers to ya Steve!!

First time viewer. All I can say is awesome video Steve. I'm getting ready to buy a generator and thanks for not making me watch every tiny aspect of you running this generator. You cut all the right corners on this video just straight and to the point. I already have the pressure washer and it runs great love it! Thanks again for the run down and not making me sit through a drag out.
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Hi Steve, Propane produces fewer BTUs per gallon of fuel then gasoline and natural gas is even less. Power is as follows: Gasoline 100%, Propane 90%, Natural Gas 80%. So you loose 10% from propane and 20% of power from natural gas compared to straight gasoline. As far as the RPM's. I know my Generac EXL7550/13500 portable generator requires (as per Generac) to set the RPM'S To 3750 no load, the volts to 125v no load, and HZ 62.5 No load. Again, as per the service manual. The reason I believe is when the generator is under load it will be pretty much at the standard 3600 rpm and so on which is required to keep things running properly. Please keep your videos coming.
The only negative thing I can think of about my BRAND NEW 3400 pressure washer is: IT DOESN'T START. Other than that, it's absolutely perfect. WTFG WESTINGHOUSE. Proud American craftsmanship.
I own a very similar "PowerHorse" brand (sold by Northern Tools) pressure washer. I paid about $50 USA more than the Westinghouse, and it came with a totally different pump that has an oil fill / level check dipstick and a drain. The plastic hose is a pain to coil and uncoil, but livable. Same Chinese-made 212cc Honda-Clone engine. I'm very happy with mine. THREE SUGGESTIONS: first, change out the spark plug with your favorite USA / Japan / German made plug as the originals can be of poor quality. Second, the engine works REALLY HARD and gets REALLY HOT - I've measured crankcase temps over 100 deg C on mine in the heat of summer. I'd highly recommend a very high quality synthetic engine oil. THIRD - change after the first hour (to get the wear-in particles out) and then frequently after that. If you can change the oil in your pump, do the same with the pump! (it uses a different oil than the engine, so check your manual.) Oil is cheap! I'm very happy with mine, especially having gotten it on sale for just under $300. I've probably got 10 hours on it at this point in time.
I also own a Westinghouse iGen2200 inverter generator. While totally different being a "suitcase" style generator...I think it's similar good-for-the-price point level of quality. It's run everything I've thrown at it up to full rated load. Mine had a metallic ringing noise which I found was a slightly over-length starter pawl in the recoil touching the cup on the flywheel. Three licks with a file and it's gone, although took me about an hour to get in there, figure it out, and replace everything. Same three suggestions as above - replace the original plug, use a good oil, and change the oil after the first hour and then frequently after that. Even with the starter pawl "ringing" the flywheel, I'm very happy with mine. I've put probably 25 hours on mine at this point.
My kind of Guy!!! Drinks my favorite beer MGD !!!!! Also I just ordered a Westinghouse generator but the 9500 version. Can't wait for it to get here.
Right on Buddy!
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Plus my name is Steve also. How do ya figure.
Steve, fwiw I have the larger WGEN7500 generator hooked up to the house. This summer I ran the whole house including the AC for two days during a power failure. If the volt/amp meter can be trusted as accurate, 38 amps at max load. Worked like a champ. I was slightly skeptical that I could do it, but the generator exceeded my expectations. Now (Almost) hoping for a short winter blackout so I can test it with the boiler.😀
For future reviews, could you cover how easy you think it would be to service each engine? I'd like to know if there's a good carburetor, that essential things are easy to access, etc. I'd love to see your rating as a professional for how easy it might be for the average person to service them (special tools needed, etc). Keep up the great work!
10 beer rating !!! Thank you!!!
Thank you & good job with your review!
My pleasure!
Steve I have a 4 year old Gasoline 7500 run 9000 peak unit that has a battery start but I run it every 30 days for 15 minutes even months and 30 minutes odd months under load. It still starts first or second pull every time on pull rope. I have a 30 amp generator panel 10 circuit box that runs most of the outlets in my house and will has no problem running my gas furnace in the winter. It gets run at least 4 times a year or more due to Southern Thunder storms and an occasional tropical systems. What I meant to lead with but got sidetracked is I have a GenTent which is rated to withstand a Cat1 Hurricane winds and rain. The highest wind we have had has been 70mph gust with 50mph sustained and both the Generator and the GenTent perform well. The old generator due to its size is not near as fuel efficient as the model you demonstrated but I agree with your rating on their generator.
I think I'm going to have to buy that generator it looks great price is fantastic

This is made by Ducar, a very large engine manufacturer in China. I’ve imported Chinese engine from China in Canada for years, visited this factory a few times, it was clean and quality was pretty good.
Thanks for the info!
have fun with your new toys steve
I've got 2 generators so not in the market there but it's a great price. The pressure washer seems good enough for homeowner type duty and also priced to sell. Great video Steve and and big thank you to Westinghouse.
Thanks for sharing
Yes Steve that’s US$500 for the states and it’s pretty damn good price here in the states for the generator thank you for the reviews and it looks like Westinghouse did a good job
Almost impossible to start on propane..tried everything...pulled and pulled and ...after a couple of uses , decided to return it ..It truly sucks for propane , which is why I bought it. No , it's not worth the trouble. I doubt it would start at all in the winter.
It's really down to two things:
1, Stoichiometric Combustion Ratio: The ideal air/fuel ratio for propane is about 6% leaner, that means there's simply less chemical energy per combustion, air/fuel ratio is set by the carburetor.
2, Engine optimization: In an overly simplified explanation, we are running propane in an engine designed for gasoline here, some power and efficiency are sacrificed in the process. But hey, if you put gasoline in a propane engine you get a bomb so.....
So they sent you the pressure washer to take care of that rubber foot track the generator leaves. They thought of everything.
Power washer leaves a black streak track too
Propane has fewer btu's per unit than gas does.. Fewer btu's means less power. The engine rpm does not indicate the power available. As you well know you can run and v8 engine at 2000 rpm even if it is missing on one cylinder and you can run a v8 engine at 2000 rpm that is firing on all cylinders. Even though the rpm is the same the power available is not. Rpm does not necessarly= power.
Thanks for all the good information your channel provides. I have learned a lot. I never know there were so many good beers out there.
Great looking machines Steve. I need the pressure Washer!
They are both great looking machines. I appreciate your honesty Steve and I'm sure Westinghouse does also. My pressure washer is starting to show its age, so I think I will have to look into one of these. Thanks for the video buddy. Take care. See ya.

One of the best Generators 👌

Thank you for the review of the generator. We moved last November to a house in the country. I have been looking at different generators for a backup since the house doesn't have one. Was looking at the Westinghouse generators because of it being duel fuel. We have natural gas and was hoping to be able to use it as the fuel source.
Natural gas has less than half the heat output of propane ( 1030 BTUs per cubic foot versus 2516 BTUs per cubic foot). Using natural gas would likely result in a big loss in wattage. But you should consult Westinghouse about using natural gas.
Charlie Caltagarone
You can dual fuel any generator with a proper aftermarket kit.
@@1Knightwolf thanks for the info
Steve, I believe gasoline has a higher energy content than propane that is why generators have a lower rating on propane. Similarly if you run your car on propane it will have less horse power.
By the way, the Westinghouse Gen looks suspiciously like my Firman Gen. When I picked up my Firman at Costco I did some research on the brand and Firman is a Chinese manufacturer that actually builds small engine equipment and they are highly rated. I have been very happy with the Firman. It is a 9500W (on gasoline) for $649 at Costco.
Firman actually builds the units for many other "manufacturers".
I have seen an American Y.T. vid on the Westinghouse gen. and saw where there is a propane kit to be had.No more bad ethanol gas in that case!!! Cheers from Sunny Sooke.

I have a WGen6500 now for almost two years. Not a bit of trouble. I've had to use it about 10 times in those two years and it has been flawless each time. I keep it on a trickle charger to maintain the battery and start it every month or two. The 6500W peaks at 7500W surge. I'm able to power my whole house in outages. Of course I'm careful about which circuits I use during those outages, but it powers my boiler, refridge, a freezer and sump pump along with all lights and such. If my wife wants to cook, I shut off the fridge or freezer or both temporarily. I ended up buying another for my daughter and her husband for their house.

Outstanding! As usual 😉 I bought the generator based on your review. I was on the fence but you really helped me decide. Thanks Steve!
Good choice!
Can you recommend a magnetic dip stick for this Generator? Part number?
Over the years and having used and maintained a lot of different pressure washers, I always have a look at the pump, first thing. I prefer a CAT pump. The darn things are just the best! Expensive, I know but they last and repair on them isn't too bad. What I have found is that 3500 psi @3.5 gpm is about the best that the average guy will need, in a cold water unit. It will peel even heavy grease off of concrete fairly well. What really wrecks these units is running them over 2 minutes with the nozzle closed. At those pressures, the heat build up is almost instant! Pretty much destroys the bypass valve. To avoid this problem you would have to go to a very expensive commercial unit. Personally I wouldn't buy one with less than 3500psi@3.5 gpm, or something close to that but it depends on what your needs are.
In 2013 Costco was selling the 7000 Watt blue Westinghouse gas generator for $700. I bought it, have had no trouble with it, I start it monthly and it starts right up. My town has very few power outages so have not had to really use it. Looks the same but has no outlet covers. It came with a 25' power cord.

I have NO idea! I will look into it...
If I remember right they put the blocks under the engine after they had issues with the engine seperating from the frame.
Thanks for this video, Steve. I have been looking into Gens for a little while and just came across this one today. Your review is appreciated!
My pleasure!
I bought a Westinghouse generator a year or so ago. Used it for one week and it completely stopped producing power. They sent out some new receptacles for me to replace, and that wasn’t the issue.. sent new AVR and brush. Also wasn’t the issue. I was told to take it to a service shop affiliated with Westinghouse because it sounds like a internal engine problem. Only thing is, there aren’t any service shops affiliated with them in my city.. so I was basically stuck with a brand new generator that can’t be used.
I could cope with those! Nice compromise/ price. Good around home. Thanks bud👍
You're Welcome...
I feel it makes less electrical power on propane because it'll probably de-power the unit while running propane and will likely produce less horsepower than running gasoline (my opinion) however the versatility of being able to use dual fuels outweighs the lower electrical power output while on propane.

Steve what size spark plug wrench does the power washer take?
My pw is missing screws for handle nozzle holder (blue). Cannot get gas cap off. Pull cord for starting doesn’t pull at all. Made in Vietnam. Clearly little QC. Update: unstuck gas cap by hitting on opposite sides with hammers to get enough torque for it to unscrew. Ship with a drop of oil or grease on gas cap threads. Removed pull cord that was limp. Not the problem. The thing that the pull cord is supposed to turn isn’t turning. It is locked in place. Update: I noticed the cover over the rotating thing was pushed in slightly. I pried it out a bit with the hammer claw and it rotated with just my hand. Reinstalled pull cord/cover and it works just fine now.
Good review. Thanks for sharing. Hard tires versus air get the hard ones.my tires on my generator are 16 years old . But need replacing bet the next one want be air filled

3840 RPM will give you 64 Hz output instead of the standard 60 Hz.
Generators run unattended and the low oil sensor is more important there than a pressure washer where the operator is near by when it is operation.
Under load the generator will likely slow down slightly to be nearer 60 Hertz. Higher frequency is less likely to damage inductive devices like electric motors as low frequency. Inductive reactance is lower at lower frequencies which causes overcurrent. With resistive loads and switching power supplies, frequency is irrelevant.
Oh come on! Three things. Those low oil shut offs are prone to failure, and that's fun when you need the damn thing. Another Great video.
I had a brand new, top of the line Generac die after maybe 6 hours due to a bad oil sensor. Fixed under warranty, and running smooth since 2005, but it was down for a month.
Later, I had a pressure washer die for same reason. I unplugged the oil sensor, and it's running great years later. I do check the oil level from time to time. Sometimes, a feature is nice, but not really needed.
Realistically, if your 6.5 HP motor stopped splashing oil, you would just buy a new motor or pressure washer, not go inside the engine to fix the problem. Especially when a new engine is only $99 from Harbor Freight Tools.
Looks like great products , I wish you would have load tested the generator and see how it performs under load and if it performs better or worse on different fuel types
Propane has less BTUs per volume than gasoline, all the dual fuel gens have lower power output with propane. Also the speed will affect the frequency of the sine wave (AC) that it puts out. So it might be interesting to see what the frequency is being output. Some equipment won't be happy if it's not close to 60Hz.
hello, I can honestly say this is an awesome pressure washer . I purchased one several months ago and it exceeded my expectation, and reasonably priced. I purchased a 2nd one for my dad for Father's day. He absolutely loves it! I think I'm sold from this video to buy the generator. Is it easy to start like the pressure washer? Thank you for sharing!
Good Review
Thanks!
I have a Generate , but this one looks nice too.....Like this propane better....cool
Having issues trying to get antifreeze in the pump because of the gasket. Any help would be appreciated.
I have been using my Westinghouse for about 6 months now. It runs about 4 hours a day, 2 in the morning , 2 in the evening. I have run it about 10 hours a day when it was hot out.I am boondocking. It's been good, but now I am having eradict power fluctuations, with the generator taking a couple of minutes to actually start supplying power. A total of 5 months of use and it looks like it's not going to make the end of the season which is in another month.
Cool looking units
Thanks for the video, looking to purchase new pressure washer.
Good luck!
Like the ones that are tri-fuel. Great for home use. Also you can get a new regulator and be able to convert it to tri-fuel.
I bought the pressure washer that you reviewed and I love it. So easy to set up and my gosh it has Power! Like you mentioned about the hose. I will get a new one. I did buy an extra tip that oscillates? But think it doesn't produce enough GPM because it almost cut off the pressure after about 30 sec. of using. But still Love it. Thanks Steve👍🍺
You're Welcome...
You should check the output voltage and hz before changing rpms. It may be perfect under load. Ideally it’s 62 hz no load and 58 full load.
Always test a generator under load. Do a 15-20 minute routine run every month or so. Plug in a couple of hair dryers. I have a 5500w and I try to run it close to max with 3 hair dryers. My brother-in-law has a 7500w that he ran for 4 days straight, never changed the oil (normally recommended every 25 hours) and it's been sitting now for 3 years. When he needs it and it won't run, I'll offer him $100 for it.
Awesome informative video. You definitely eased my mind on purchasing both products for my detail business #subscribed
Right on
I have the WGen5300sc and there is a lot of air (not smoke or exhaust) that is coming from the right bottom corner of the OHV black plastic cover. Not sure if this is the way its designed or a quality control issue?
I understand there is a 20% loss of power with propane so if u need 6,000 u will get 4800 watts,
but on gas , the full amount. I have been checking it out, propane has less btu's to it. Not trying
to be unkind. just experience at my end. so far as the Champion, I have worked on them and
maintain them as well. They are a fine gen and with the proper maint. u will do fine. Start it
every few months and put a load on it. this goes for any generator. always keep extra oil an
spark plugs. keep the air filter clean, it makes a BIG difference.
