I was too tired to type this last night because it was 5am UK time when I finished the animation but xD
Just wanted to add some extra details : the frog rock isn’t canon but my idea for it was that because Puritan kids didn’t really have toys, they would make their own things. Philip loves to draw and had access to rocks and frogs, so I thought it would make a cute thing to re use in my animations :) And then the first palisman he ate being a frog was like symbolism for that happy part of him dying.
As for Philip saying his parents lied when they died, my take on it was that because he was so young, he didn't know how to process death yet, and his reaction was, our parents promised to keep us safe and now we're orphans and have no home. He was sad they died, but also angry, not specifically at them but at life in general, and that was the start of his abandonment issues and obsession with Caleb who was the only person he had left (since it’s also hinted the villagers in the original Gravesfield weren’t so kind to them and they became witch hunters to fit in).
As for the Caleb memorial scene, I know it does feel hypocritical but I felt like it fit the character very well - he’ll try to convince himself the grimwalkers are better versions of Caleb, but the fact he keeps making them alone proves he still really does love Caleb in his own messed up way, and I thought the contrast between him having a little memorial and him then taking bones from his corpse was a cool little detail :)
As for the whole thing with the collector, my theory is that Philip spoke to him in the in between before finding the tablet because that would explain why he was shown being already cursed in one of the portraits when Caleb was still alive. If we go by beard length time estimation, he had only been in the demon realm for maybe 5-8 months before killing Caleb and I don’t think he would have found out about palismen and glyphs on his arm on his own by then, plus the collector also said they were the one to teach him magic.
As for the scene in the snow, it was mostly to make a call back to my first animation - my time was fairly limited by what I can realistically animate as a single person, but it’s very possible Philip would have seen the collector while attempting to make a first portal back home the same way Luz did. Him passing out and seeing the collector that way isn’t as realistic as him attempting a portal, but for this specific video and calling back to the last one I felt like it was fitting enough that it worked and got the point across :)

I also really like how little Philip's voice is similar to the voice of the Collector and how the voice echoes at the end of the memory, it is heard most clearly there.
This is by far the best fan animation I've ever seen. I can see this being an awesome scene in The Owl House series.
Would you consider having the voice actors use Original Pronunciation, the accent of 17th century Britain and the American colonies? Thinking about Philip in the context of the history of the Puritan colonies just tickles me, personally.
So Philip almost "died" of hypothermia? The collector gave him a second chance to live and told him about glyphs and he gave him the idea of palisman consumption? If this becomes canon in episode 2 I'm screaming
Not to be a troll or hater but in “Else Where and Else When” Philip had those glyphs and been consuming palismen from BEFORE he met the Collector, unless this “dream” is how he learned about the collector and everything else I said🧐

Philip is definitely one of my favorite characters. Yes, he's a horrible person, but he's so well written and it makes him such a cool character to see.
Exactly. Bellos/Philip is such a good character. Everyone wanted an extended season 3 for more Luz,Eda an king stuff. I wanted more Bellos Lore lol.
To be honest I like Caleb
He's an absolute terrible person and character, and that's precisely why he's such a terrific villain.

I like how when he opens up Caleb’s coffin, he has this desolate and saddening look on his face. Then, his face expression changes as he tells himself that he is in the RIGHT for murdering his brother. All he can feel is anger, resentment towards his actions, and bad determination. As he puts himself in this mindset, his face expression immediately changes to impenitence and anger and quickly grabs caleb’s remains to possibly make a another grimwalker. It’s so messed up and eerie but so interesting! Amazing job. I love this.
Thank you !!! Yeah I wanted to have the sad expression first. I want to show the nuance in his character as much as I can. He’s making all the wrong decisions, but there’s a tiny part of him that regrets killing Caleb and still misses him a lot (I mean if he didn’t miss him at all he wouldn’t keep making copies of him). But he tells himself he’s in the right because that’s all he has left, and part of him is also still angry at Caleb for leaving too.
That was the moral event horizon for Belos. He murdered his brother, the only real friend he had, the only family he had left, unable to accept a witch, who his oh-so-righteous village elders taught him to hate, as part of his family. There, he had truly lost everything-including his humanity.
He couldn't help it, a witch? They as kids were taught that witches are the worst brings in existance and must be destroyed so when sphillip saw that his own brother betrayed him by loving a witch, it had to end this way. I stand by phillip, I'd have done the same thing he does, he's protecting humanity from witches as they possess power a lot stronger than that of a human, if witches decide to expand or control the dimensional rift, it will be bad for humans.

Considering how Matthew Rhys insists that he sees Belos as misunderstood, I'm starting to believe he meant it like Belos being his own worst enemy. Belos had so many opportunities to let go of his old-timey prejudice, but he's too selfish and stuck in his ways to even consider his own faults and how he's not much better than the witches he persecuted. Because of it, Caleb's dead, Lilith, Hunter, Raine, Darius, Eberwolf, and Kikimora to an extent betrayed him, and the Collector is running amok in the so-called utopia he created because Belos betrayed the little guy's trust in him. I wouldn't be surprised if once Belos returns to the Boiling Isles, he'll be greeted by an entire island's worth of witches wanting him burned at the stake, and he'll only have himself to blame.
Oh, and really beautiful animation too.
Imagine it does end with him being burned at the stake. Quite an ironic end, but a fitting one.
i still think "misunderstood" meant how we all saw him as a generic "take over the world" type villain, when the reality is much more horrifying and messed up. really cool analogy though :D
@@utopiaa_1775 I do think it is both. After Magpie's first full animation of 2 brothers the Matthev for the first time in like 2 years actualy interacted with ToH community and not even podcasts. Magpie is the only creator who showed Belos lore accurate but still somewhat sympathetic. Some say he does not interact because he has other things to do, some say he was harrased by Belos haters and some say he just did not give a toss . I think that is what he imagined Belos was gona be like and meaybe he was gona be but the whole cut the S3 in half thing happened. I am happy the guy even aknowladged the animation
I think it's more of a "I've already killed and hurt enough people to get to where I am now, if I stop now, it will all have been in vain" kinda thing.

This animation is breathtaking, and the emotions this exudes are immaculate. It genuinely feels heartbreaking and cold. It almost makes me feel sad for Philip. And the music, it's perfect. Honestly, this is just amazing, and I can't imagine how hard this is to create without a studio, on your own. I hope you keep doing amazing things in 2023 :)
The way Philip talked about his parents showed use that deep down even as a child Belos has always been hiding within him
The implication that Belos killed and consumed palisman because of the collector is a good addition. The tie of it reminding him of his brother with the frog too is interesting. Thanks again for making these cool animations!
Oh this is absolutely stunning!! I love how even as an innocent child, we can see the beginnings of his twisted emotionally immature way of thinking (but ultimately reasonable thought process at his then age) with the anger at his and Caleb's parents "leaving". Storytelling and attention to detail as spectacular as your animation skills!! 😍😍

Not only is this beautifully drawn and animated, but all the ways it ties things together are just so cool, especially the stuff with Philip as a kid- he wears his mask because he’s scared, so that the bad things (witches) will be scared of him instead. His ailment over the centuries leads to him developing a monstrous form that resembles said mask, which would symbolize how he’s now permanently gripped by fear.

Okay, but I saw this and audibly gasped in awe at the transition from little Pip to grown Philip in the snow and in horror at the casket being opened, plainly showing Caleb's body. I was legit disturbed. This is phenomenal and a perfect start to 2023! Can't wait for more!
Phillip and Caleb's voice performances were amazing
Philip is one of those characters that really makes you question if his actions are justified. His intention is to protect humanity from evil, and when you think about it, if humanity did discover the demon realm, we'd probably either take away its resources for our own personal gain, or destroy it like what Philip did with the draining spell. I do think that the magic that the boiling isles has is really dope, but no human being deserves to know about the possible existence of magic.
Luz wants to become a witch, because its her dream. Imagine if it fell into the wrong hands, similar to how Philip used magic for his own benefit, and cost the lives of so many grim walkers, and palismen.
So while Philip has a good intention to make sure no human enters the boiling isles, but the steps that he's taking is very cruel.
Hell, he was a witch hunter, so when you think about that, he was born in a time where if anyone sides with a witch, they get sentenced to death. Philip killed his own brother because that's what he was taught. Even in the second episode of season 3, he even said he tried to save his brothers soul.
The lore to this franchise is so interesting, sad, and cool, there's no doubt it deserves to be talked about on Film Theory.
I would LOVE a spin off following Phillip and his journey. Dude is a fantastic character. So much depth and stuff that could be explored.

@@MagpieInGravesfield I totally understand, the finale was rather disappointing, I wish we would of gotten more depth to characters and explanations of belos, or Philip of his past. But unfortunately Disney canceled the show, and we lost all of that. I think Dana and her team did great with what time they were given, regarding the circumstances.

These animations tell Philips and Calebs story so well. If Disney just hadn't cut season 3 then we would have gotten the perfect story arc for Phillip/ Belos and why the way he is. But we were robbed.
This animation adds so much fascinating context. Belos wore his specific mask because he wanted the witches to fear him, as he once feared them as a child. Caleb's perceived betrayal was punctuated by the lie of their parents always being there for them. In fact, Caleb pinky swearing and breaking it in Philip's eyes are probably why he had no problem breaking a pinky swear with the Collector, because he'd been spurned by one in the past, and by someone close no less.
I am at a loss for words with this. This animation absolutely stellar! Also Collector saving Phillip is not something I expected! All the VAs knocked it out of the park too

Across Fandoms I've never quite seen someone stay so true to the original artstyle as you have, great animation. Also the freedom to add in darker imagery personally elevates this above the show so kudos.

What I like about these Belos-centered fan animations is that it humanizes Philip/Belos.
In the show, he is depicted as a tyrannical ruler with genocidal intent, believing he is doing good for humanity.
In these animations, he is depicted as a lonely boy/man who felt betrayed by his brother.
Not saying Philip's intentions are good, but it's intriguing to see a perspective not shown in the series.

I honestly hope that they explore this somewhere in the last two episodes. If they just leave it that he's just some genocidal tyrant without further explaining why and how he got there, then I will be majorly disappointed. I can't help but feel like a part of Belos hated what he had become. But he was so blinded by his hatred and prejudice towards the witches that he kept telling himself it's the right thing to do.
I really think that he has some Lord Shen vibes, my hc is that part of Belos knows he's wrong, but he also knows he's far too gone to turn back or stop and if he stops, all those deaths he caused would be for nothing
The amount of detail you put into these is incredible. I’ve been starved for Wittebane-lore and stumbled across your animations, and I am seriously impressed. The talent here is off the charts
As always, your videos slap and are genuinely incredible. Especially the choices in visuals when they play for a flash of a second and then shift to the next moment
It becomes a whole new sense of mystery and horror when you realize it was all to stay alive and find his brother and eventually it turned into a much more… horrific reason why he continued to live
The Collector moment was incredible, but I think I enjoyed the flashes of memories much greater because of the *impact* they have, the knife over his forearm, the stone carving of the Palisman/Frog, then the dead Palisman and the “bleeding” of the ooze from his face…
And then the final moment of Caleb… ahhhhhh- the screaming is loud right now, because I wasn’t expecting it

It's really sad, when I think about last episode and patethic end of Philip/Belos.
Wow!! This is absolutely stunning! I love the animation, the music, the voice-acting…It’s all so perfect. It does make me even more curious about the remainder of Philip and Caleb’s backstory and what we might see of it in the last two episodes, especially how they plan to conclude Belos’ (and The Collector’s) arc.
It's just sad how a nice boy from the 1600's turns into an evil monster.
I'm getting chills! The music paired with the visuals are so unnerving, and the childlike voice acting is the icing on the cake! I have now experienced true beauty!

This was incredible. I wasn't expecting actual voices for these guys! And Caleb's body straight up being destroyed with each attempt of bringing him back is horrifying, along with the bit where he CARVED THE GLYPHS INTO HIS ARM, especially since he used *that* knife

Why can't we have this in the actual show!? The fandom right now is doing more then the show at this point!
I'm just hoping the next episode shows the full backstory of Caleb, Philip, and Evelyn, animated.
Maybe luz decides the only way to stop Belos from going after the Collector is going into his mind and taking him down that way.
While Hunter finds out he's able to communicate with Caleb's spirit through Flapjack and Caleb shows Hunter what happened in the past. While Luz unintentionally ends up fixing Philip's damaged memories while running away from the inner belos? And finds out the real truth of what happened was well.
At least that's what I'll hoping for. Since everything we know do far about the brothers and Evelyn is all speculation/interpretation and none of it is truly canon yet. We only know Belos and Philip becoming Belos. We know nothing of who Philip was in the past with Caleb.
Sorry for the rant, I'm just getting tired of waiting for actual animated clips of the backstory, since I really want to make video edits with those characters, and want to see of some of my theories are confirmed or not. Like was Philip planning to kill Evelyn or Caleb.

I think the only way to stop Belos is literally subjecting him to relive his past. People want to kill Belos in the most painful manner, with either the Collector, Darius, Eda, Hunter, Luz, Camilla, King, or even undead Grimwalkers to do the job. But they never consider the trauma that would come with killing a person, even as wicked as Belos or that killing Belos with hate only vindicates his beliefs.
And honestly, we saw three attempts to kill Belos by Luz, the Collector, and Hunter. It didn't stick. Belos either turns into a monster strong enough to kill Luz there, regenerates from his battle against the Collector, and escapes drowning from Hunter. Belos will not stay down and he is willing to endure physical pain to see the Boiling Isles destroyed.
The only thing he's not willing to endure is emotional pain from the memories of his brother, specifically how he murdered his brother. He screams in agony when Gus subjects him to his worst memory, and he runs away from Luz when she accused him of stabbing Caleb first. And you think about it, that is the worst thing you could do to Belos. And if he were to accept his guilt and finally feel the grief and horror of killing his own brother, it might actually kill him and it would be an act of mercy from Luz.

Luz being sick of Belos, for all the pain he put her through as well being emotional and not thinking straight, just wants to kill him and get ot over with, do they just have to deal with the Collector.
The others are unsure and try to calm her down.
Hunter would speak up, and say he doesn't want. Not because he still cares about Belos, but because he doesn't want Belos to turn them into monsters as well. As well as wanting to find all the answers hidden from him for hears, for both him and Flapjack.
Though that's my opinion for a possible scene.

I completely agree, because honestly it wouldn’t make sense if they killed, fill up physically that wouldn’t make any sense at all. He’s already survived. A lot of the times I’ve been killed physically. Now emotionally destroying him that make more sense.

This is amazing! I’ve seen some of your other animations and the quality never fails to impress. You’re so talented, everything about this was phenomenal. The shot of Calebs skeleton really stood out to me, but to be fair pretty much everything captivated my full attention cause it looked so good. Also kudos to the voice actors, they did a great job. Really well done, I love these animations that take on a bit of a darker tone.
